Nintendo powerless to up Wii street price

Platform holder responds to indie concerns that upped trade price will rob them of profits

Wii platform holder Nintendo has told MCV that it is powerless to up the street price of the Nintendo Wii – adding to the concerns of many of the nation’s indies.

MCV today exclusively revealed that Nintendo is to up the trade price of the Nintendo Wii by around £19, bringing the trade price perilously close to the selling price.

However, with consumers used to the established price of £179.99, some fear that multiples will swallow the loss and continue selling the machine for the same price – leading indies to choose between losing their profits or selling the machine for more than the supermarkets.

“It is illegal for any manufacturer to set or fix retail prices,” a Nintendo spokesperson told MCV. “Retail price is always set by the retailer. It is up to them what they then price Wii at following the increase in trade price.

“We have absolutely no discussions with or influence whatsoever in what retailers decide to do with price.”

A Manufactorer is able to change their suggested RRP due to increased costs etc... what they arnt allowed to do is tell retailers that they MUST charge a certain price as that would be seen as price fixing. A RRP is just a suggested selling price and can be increased or decreased by a Manufatorer as they see fit

so now when they advertise the wii or games on tv the adverts are still gonna state console price around £179 and us indies are gonna get gobby customers having a go at us for charging more than that just so we can make a living!!

More like Nintendo dont want to have to edit all the adverts on the tv saving them money and they dont want the Bad press for increasing the RRP knowing that the big retailers will swallow the increase as they will still make something if they dont bundle

I think all Indies should Boycott Nintendo as Gem's new trade price is going to be £159.03 which is £182.88 inc vat so Nintendo want us to all sell at a loss or charge a higher price and be the bad guys!!

I agree with Matt, Nintendo cant tell retailers what to sell their consoles for, but unless they dont want a whole bunch of peeved off retailers they need to do the decent thing and advertise a new rrp...I for one won't be stocking anymore consoles untill they do.
And I encourage all other indies to follow suit.
