RE5 beats Bono as gaming tops entertainment battle

Gaming’s position atop of the UK entertainment hierarchy was given a serious boost last week as strong sales of Capcom’s chart-topping Resident Evil 5 saw gaming streak ahead of both music and film.

Stats from Verdict research show that last weekend RE5 outsold every item in the UK singles charts – and that includes digital sales, too. It also outsold the hyped new album from Irish rockers U2.

On top of this, the game grossed more than the UK’s top five cinema movies combined.

This is proof if any were needed that games are the entertainment medium of choice in 2009,” Capcom’s UK PR manager Leo Tan stated.

Thanks to its strong storyline, amazing graphics and compelling co-op play, Resident Evil 5 provides hundreds of hours of entertainment at a relatively low cost – and it’s this value for money that consumers are increasingly responding to.”
