Microsoft: PS3 is haemorrhaging at retail

Microsoft: PS3 is haemorrhaging at retail

Aaron Greenberg says Xbox 360 sales are up 53 per cent year-on-year for February

Following another bumper month at North American retail, Xbox 360 product manager Aaron Greenberg has stated that the Xbox 360 continues to exceed the company’s internal expectations – and that PS3 is consistently failing to meets Sony’s.

“[The 53 per cent year-on-year rise] exceeds even the high end of what analysts projected we would do for the month,” he told Gamasutra. “I think the highest I saw was roughly 30 per cent. We've had multiple months now of sustained year over year growth, which is fantastic.”

“We have over 130 titles rated over 80 on Metacritic. No other platform even has 100 at that level.”

In addition, Greenberg spared time for a dig at rival Sony, criticising its continued high price point at retail. “You can't underestimate that we're half the price of the PS3 at a time when consumers were looking for great value.

“The PS3 was down in February two per cent even with the launch of Killzone 2 – that's months of year-over-year declines. Xbox continues to head north while the PS3 is heading south. We're gaining share.

“But what we hear from our partners is that it's not just PS3, it's also PS2 down 62 percent year over year. With that business declining, and with the PS3 business declining, it's been described to me as haemorrhaging at retail right now, and it just keeps getting worse.

“What we're finding in our research is that a large portion of the volume we're driving with Xbox 360 purchasers is actually PS2 owners choosing Xbox for the next generation. We're switching people from the PlayStation brand over to the Xbox brand.”

The _PS2_(!!) isn't selling as well as it used to? There's a great insight into the market that you can only get from an expert like Greenberg.

If XBox is doing so great why the need to take dumb shots at Sony?

What I find ridiculous is Microsoft are always taking these hits at Sony in regards there sales yet the PS3 is going to be around a lot longer than Xbox 360. There's already rumours around that Xbox 720 is going to be announced at E3 in May whereas PS3 is going to continue to sell subtantial amounts of unit for many years.

Again he comments on the fact that X360 has 130 titles over 80% as opposed to the opposition. I would like to point out that X360 has had an extra year and a half in this market as opposed to PS3 so obviously that's a clear reason.

This may seem like a rant from a Sony fanboy but it isn't I have PS3 Xbox 360 and Wii. I play my PS3 and Xbox as much as each other. In fact I probably play Xbox more atm just for CoD5 but it's ridiculous that every few weeks Microsoft come out with these comments.

@ Paul if you honestly think Xbox 720 is going to be announced at E3 in May, well you're just kidding yourself. It would be commercial suicide for Microsoft witht the 360 doing so well.

When I go in most of my local Videogame stores the PS3 section is always devoid of customers - PSP is nowhere to be seen, only Pre-owned games.

Asda vs Tesco

Seems like this is going the way of the Asda adverts to me: "Last week we had 1000 products that were cheaper than Tesco's". Shame because platforms shouldn't be sniping at each other like this. And I'm a 360 fanboy, so I don't know why I'm sticking up for PS!

As an owner of both a ps3 and a 360, I have to say, I am glad that xbox is doing better.
In my opinion, the 360 is far far better than the ps3. I hadly ever load up the PS3, and when I do, it tends to be for a Blu-Ray.
The exclusives the PS3 has I dont believe to be anything special, Killzone, Resistance, Motorstorm, all games I have played, and then gone back to my Xbox.

Xbox just got it right; The ability to chat with your friends without going through to the dashboard for example. And the simple things too; like gamerscore. Why play something on PS3 that's avaliable on both, when the 360 version has the potential of adding to my score total? You may scoff at this, but Sony missed a trick and added 'trophies' (lol!) at a later date, albeit after, long after, I had finished Unchartered.

The 360 does everything the PS3 does, and looks more stylish. The controllers are ergonomically designed, and just fit. The games are the real way to judge the difference, and I would much rather play any of the 360 exclusives over the PS3 ones. Metal Gear? No thanks. Killzone? Nah, I have played it before in every other pretty shooter.

Call me a fan boy all you want, and while I don't condone the jibs this fella' is aiming directly at sony, I believe he should gloat; Sony took it for granted that people would buy their machine, and didn't put the effort it in to make it special. I applaud Microsoft, and their beautiful system!

LONG LIVE XBOX!

Does the XBox do Wifi better than the PS3 (and Wii!)? Does the XBox do better than the PS3 regarding Blu-Ray? Regarding hard disks and upgrading? Regarding price of its online service? Regarding the machines untapped capability?

Yes, the XBox has a better online service but a big fat no, the XBox does NOT "do eveything better than the PS3".

Aaaarg! bloomin fanboy's make me mad!

My take on the situation

The XBox 360 is significantly cheaper and has a large library of games but the only quam I have with Microsoft is the Red Ring of death, nearly everyone I know who has an XBOX 360 has had the Red Ring of Death at some point.

If the PS3 were to go down in price and introduce a better library, I am sure it would fare better than the XBOX. Sony has a free online service, has had no recent widespread faults with its consoles and is perfectly capable of becoming a good console.

I am no fanboy but I would perfer a console that lasts for a while, my PS2, XBOX, PSone and Gamecube have served me well. The XBOX 360 is one that need some tweaking!

With the Jasper chip set, the RROD is pretty much history. Personally I belive the whole RROD thing was overstated. For example, there was a large rise in "RROD Returns" just after MS started protecting the DVD rom drives from Flashing. ie people found they couldn't flash them so returned them hoping to get one with the older drive.
I have had a launch day 360 with no issues at all. I did once get a "ring" but that was because I left the video lead out when I moved from one room to another. I cursed MS until I realised it was my fault and plugged it in correctly!

LONG LIVE THE XBOX! oh wait red rings.

LONG LIVE THE XBOX!. sorry ill shout louder, you couldnt quite hear me over the cooling fans.

i work in a game shop and the only reason xbox's seeing an increase is because the same customers are having to buy the unreliable red ring box again. its ridiculous. our back room has like 12 broken xbox's this week along, we couldnt get moved at christmas.

now before fanboys get a chubby wait untill i state this fact. the PlayStation 3 is less than 7million consoles behind now. worldwide. its catching up BIG STYLE and the only reason xbox's numbers are increasing is because of replacements.

someone said if Microsoft revealed the 720 it would be suicide because the 360 is so strong ATM, this is true. but remember they abandoned the original xbox just 4 years in. Microsoft occasional do some dumb things.

as for exclusives. ps3 is the boy. yes if you wanna play FPS's all day long get an xbox. or better yet save £40 a year and get a PC where FPS should be played. but i dont see xbox pumping out anything like LBP, which i dont care what any fanboy says is possibly the best and most intricate platformer on all machines.

so lets see Microsoft records. steal ps3 exclusives with big wads of cash. steal the wii mii's for there xbox experience and now there stealing the wii remote. (google that bad boy) can we have an original thought Microsoft that isnt the Neanderthal "huh huh huh sony baaaad, x-box winning. or has Microsoft surrenderd the fact that little old Nintendo kicked there ass this generation and that the xbox 360 isnt a worldwide success because it tanked in japan.

now im not saying the ps3 dont have there flaws. but why why oh why doth microsoft keep taking digs. another interesting fact is that the ps3 still has no illegal mod's and console choice for the poorer people in the world will depend on being able to get counterfit goods. for cheap compared to shelling out approximately £40 for a new title. that lasts little over 6 hours.

the xbox 360 is also the reason we are getting short games these days. not because there saying make this game short but simply that there dvd media is small and incapable of storing much data. ps3 users have to settle for ports and or games that are designed for both and lord forbid ps3 to get extra maps and levels as standard on our larger media disc's.

i agree with the statement that the xbox is on its way out. simply because ive seen people not caring about the features anymore. you can have the best software features in the world. but if the hardware red lights every time then people are gonna jump ship.

reliability Microsoft look it up.

god that felt good.

The problem is my friend, you may hate fanboys, But with that astonishing rant you just had, you sound like one yourself. Best way? Don't bite. If you bite you look like a fanboy trying to argue a case.
