PopCap: The ‘end’ of retail still a long way off

VP of video game platforms Greg Canessa adds that casual firm is seeking new console development partners

Leading casual games developer PopCap has stated that High Street retail still forms a vital part of its business plan as it allows the company to reach customers that remain inaccessible through digital delivery platforms.

“While a platform such as Xbox Live Arcade or PlayStation Network gives us an opportunity to reach the Xbox 360 customer or the PlayStation customer and digitally distribute PopCap games, there will be another type of customer who will always be motivated to purchase in store,” VP of video game platforms Greg Canessa told CasualGaming.biz.

“Our retail sales climbed by 85 per cent in 2008, so the end of retail distribution of games is still a long ways off as far as we’re concerned.”

Canessa added that following the success of its partnership with Q Entertainment for the DS version fo Peggle, its on the look out for new development deals:

“We realise we’re not THE experts when it comes to consoles so finding experienced, like-minded outfits with which to partner is always something in which we’re interested.”

Its just so addictive! Even a hardcore gamer like myself enjoys spending a couple of hours on a Sunday winding down on their site playing their games. Good luck to them!
