Nintendo: Used games aren’t in the best interests of the consumer

NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime says consumers want a ‘brand-new’ experience

Reggie Fils-Aime, the outspoken president of Nintendo of America, has claimed that the growing trade-in business at games retail is not in the best interests of the consumer – though he admits that the situation would be better if publishers were to receive a slice of the pre-owned profits.

“More and more retailers are experimenting with the used game model,” Fils-Aime told Venturebeat. “We have products that consumers want to hold onto. They want to play all of the levels of a Zelda game and unlock all of the levels. A game like Personal Trainer Cooking has a long life. We believe used games aren’t in the consumer’s best interest.

“Describe another form of entertainment that has a vibrant used goods market. Used books have never taken off. You don’t see businesses selling used music CDs or used DVDs. Why? The consumer likes having a brand-new experience and reliving it over and over again. If you create the right type of experience, that also happens in video games.”

However, when asked if a profit sharing mdoel for pre-owned between retail and publishers would be possible, Reggie admitted: “That could make it more palatable. But we just think it’s a bad idea.

“The one retailer that has a substantial business in this has figured out a way to handle in a way that is effective for the consumer. That’s tough for other retailers experimenting with this, in part because their employees don’t have the expertise in this market.”

My Once Beloved Nintendo

What has become of you nintendo??? I buy a lot of new games all year but anything i'm not too sure about is bought pre-owned. Like real artists, who care not about profit, you should be happy that people experience your talent.
I have bought pre-owned dvd's and mcd's in the past but I do prefer to buy those new. The pricing is slightly different though and you can rent movies prior to purchase.

He would say that, wouldn't he?
What he actually means is "used games aren't in Nintendo's best interests".
He's saying that the consumers who trade in these games don't know what's best for them?!?!?
It's exactly this kind of myopic attitude that got the music and film biz into trouble.

Way To Go Reggie

Well done Reggie, on the near eve of the beginning of retailers around the world trying to shift what is essentially a console upgrade, in the midst of a world recession, you have to go shout your mouth off about the primary way many gamers will get the DSi; by trading in the DS Lite they already own.

Said it before, I'll say it again; Publishers should be careful they do not alienate the specialist retailers whom they rely on to guarantee successful launches.

Coming from a company who charge the most for stock and rip indies off. Indies make £10 from a Wii console and he expects indies to survive on such rubbish mark-up. Wake up man you are living in a dreamworld. The day used games stop will be the death of the gaming industry as most people will give up gaming due to the cost of buying a new game. If consumers thought used games were bad then they would not buy, but they are buying used games more than new games which says it all.

So being able to trade in your old games/consoles for new ones in order to save precious pennies isn't in the best interests of the consumer? Okay Reggie, whatever you say.

Colour me 'utterly baffled'.

How on earth did this guy get pass the interviews for the job, i have never read more of a moronic statement.

Ebay and Amazon who have HUGE customer/trader bases who thrive on the sale of second hand, Books, DVD's and CD's.

There are plenty of DVDs store selling used DVD's Blockbusters always has a healthy selection.

There is even a town in England Dedicated to Second hand book store (a little extreme i do know)

Foot in Mouth.. id tell the guy never to open his mouth in public again.

Ha.The retailer he speaks of, the one that "figured out" a way to make used games good for the consumer, makes 50% of their profit from used games, or at least this one location i am familiar with. used cartridges i can understand not wanting to buy used, games like "nintendog's" data is virtually impossible to erase. But, discs? the data is stored somewhere else. ive seen games come in used THE SAME DAY it gets released new.

note how his opinion of the used game sales would change if they got some money. lol.

in this economy people arent spending tons of money on new things. period. they are gonna take in their old stuff, trade it in for credit, and get the new thing out on the market.

and if it wasn't for trade in deals your precious nintendo dsi wouldnt have sold half as much as it did in the states on april 5th.

you joke of a president. half of the wall of wii games are "must NOT haves". fix it.

I can recall that nintendo tried to make it ilegal to buy/sell used games like 10 years ago. Especially the Nordic region distributor "Bergsala"
