SCEA exec also explains why Sony decided not to cut the price of the PS3
Sony Computer Entertainment America’s hardware marketing boss John Koller has stated that he believes the recent price drops to PS2 in the Europe and the US – though not in the UK – could see the PS2 eat into Wii’s market share.
“We do think the $99 price point could steal some share from Wii,” Koller told GameDaily.
“From a technological standpoint, the Wii is much closer to the PS2 than it is to the next-gen consoles. It's obviously not an HD box and the software development is on a par with where PS2 development is, so that's a much more realistic and similar demographic.
“Nintendo has done a fantastic job of capturing young and female, which are two areas the PS2 has started to really grab a lot of share recently as well. That's an interesting battle and we'll see how it shapes up, but we feel very confident that the $99 price level will allow us to grab our share.
“We're looking at 70-80 titles launching on PS2 this coming year, and about the same number next year in 2010. PS2 shows very little signs of slowing down, and we wanted to continue to really target that lower income consumer.”

Koller also went on to explain why Sony decided to cut the price of PS2 instead of, as many were predicting, lowering the price of its PS3 console.
“In terms of the PS3, our is on the versatility of the system and the overall value that's inherent to the system;” he explained.
“We've been focusing on development of key software franchises, and this year should be the best software year launched yet. On PS3, we look at that as a significant advantage versus Xbox 360. In particular, our first party group has really stepped up with some tremendous franchises.”

Clueless..
1/ Wii sells because of the range and breadth of software and the unique controls plus Nintendo software. PS2 is very 2006.
2/ PS3 is too expensive!!! Software will mean nothing if people can't afford to buy the system, besides the best games will still be on 360 at less than half the price!
rarely have I seen someone get it so wrong. Sony deserve to sink with this clown.
come on now
the 360s install base leaped forward when they dropped the price, if sony dropped the price this would also work for them.
Its common sence that multiplatform games will sell more if they are popular on the console with the bigger install base.
wii - now there must be hundreds of wii consoles sat covered in dust, the only good games are 1st party and guitar hero, maybe a few sega games etc but really does wii sell units like Call of duty,GTA, halo, it can have hundreds of games, but if 70% are rubbish who cares.
Not so smart yourself Ian
Why i dont see this news as ground breaking, what they have done is not going to hurt. You cannot say that Wii has a larger breadth of software than PS2, thats just silly now. Plus if its 2006 why is it still selling and second party publishers still doing their publishing? Not because its dying out, hell some european countries only got the PS2 last year, with the next gen console years off.
While PS3 is too expensive (thats only because it has hd, wireless and blue-ray built in) the only way to combat that is good software, which while you can just say 360 has better games, its only a matter of opinion as the quality is only increasing with LBP, Killzone 2, and Uncharted 2, God of War III, some could say that rivals Gears, Halo and At the Movies.
with a 10 year lifespan the PS3 is shaping up nicely, tell me that you think the 360 will last 10 years?
not on your life
dale - spot on
some really interesting points there, true ps2 price drop will not hurt anyone, plus younger customers wont even get any where near the full potential from next gen systems online functions etc, ps2 or wii is a clear choice for your first console, i also agree ps2 software is leagues ahead of wii, rpgs alone are amazing, resident evil series, gtas, god of war 1+2.
I think 360 will last longer than people expect but i cant see it going anywhere near 10 years myself
PS3
Some very good points raised, i think they may be onto a good thing with the PS2 price point if they could do some new things with the PS2 besides new games, possibly new peripherals, i.e redesign the controller. In regards to PS3 ask yourself with the the current price of the machine and the economy how it is, do you think the PS3 will last 10 years?? It is safe to say right now the 360 looks a far more safer bet without a doubt!!
Generation Lifespan
I believe the PS2 did have some 3rd party peripherals, snooker cue, table tennis bat etc. but they didnt sell that well. i think wii has done its thing and done it well, but for anyone else but nintendo to produce a similar result, they cant copy the controller, they have to try something new, the wii is too well established.
The lifespan of this generation is interesting tho. Bringing out a new console in the next 3 years is almost impossible because any technological advances are too small to make an impact or too pricey to develop into a console. So i think the 360 will be stuck for a while due to these constraints in releasing the next gen console, while the PS3 has planned for a long lifespan by putting in future safe devices, such as reoccurring function adding firmware updates (which the possibilities are pretty much endless) and blue-ray, which looks like it might be a good bet in the way things are heading. Only nintendo could benefit if they released a console in the next 3 years.
PS3 price
The fact remains in an economic climate like this a £300 console will struggle no matter what feature set it has. Especially with 2 competitors 1 an equal in terms of hardcore gaming and power both on and offline and the other a mass market phenomonon with products vastly different to the PS3. Both are hugely cheaper, anyone with the spare money to buy a console will be more price driven than ever.
lets not even bring dsi into the equasion
@Dale
Absolutely I can say that Wii has a bigger breadth of software than PS2. PS2 has more software overall than Wii clearly but it has lots of titles in the same niche. Does PS2 have a Wii fit game or Wii Sports? a better platformer than Mario Galaxy? Gordon Ramsay/Cooking with Mama.?? You may say that some is shovelware but its' all opinion. The truth is that for most families EVERY SINGLE genre is covered by the Wii, software wise. No other console can say that.
Check the NPD figures for PS2 hardware and software sales in the US, they are literally dropping off a cliff!! If PS3 was doing even averagely you wouldn't see SONY doing this with PS2.
Metacritic data shows all about relative software quality vis a via 360 vs PS3. Check it out..Google it, to state otherwise is folly. Again if the console is too expensive the software doesn't matter. People can't magic money out of thin air even if the software is awesome (its not) especially given the quality and price points of the rivals.
PS3 10 years??? with a graphics chip which was out of date at launch?? Don't make me laugh....they'll need something bigger and better than that and by 2011 at the latest.
sinking ship....
@Ian
The breadth of games on PS2 and Wii cannot be compared accurately. Yes the wii has games such as cooking mama, mario galaxy which has no rival on the PS2, but its the same the other way with Shadow of the Colossus, gow, devil may cry loads of popular platformers, jax & dax, ratchet & clank, alien homid, while setting the standard of the sand box GTA series as we know it today. The Wii is trying new different titles, the same the PS2 was doing back when it was released, and even up to a few years ago. While hardware sales in the US represent a large share of the market, there are many other territories where the sales are not falling from heights.
Let me put this straight, apart from 3D usage there will be technological breakthroughs that will change the way we play games in the next 2 years that will cause any need for a next gen for sony or microsoft. Metacritic while highly used and increasingly being referenced by publishers cannot describe how people will feel about games, metacritic is not a way of proving a difference of opinion, as this can never be done through statistics.
With a graphics chip that undoubtedly rivals the 360 it cannot be called out of date, and i do not want to point out any flaws in the 360 as then it will just become a fanboy argument. the PS3 has been developed to be unlocked through time, just like the PS2 as more generations of games come out the graphics will get better. While people cant magic money out of thin air, i would prefer one all encompassing machine then having to pay £59.99 just to get wireless plus other accessories. the PS3 is an investment that without a doubt will not be replaced in 2011
