Nintendo planning Wii and DS video download service

President Satoru Iwata promises a very different “Nintendo-like” platform

With both Xbox 360 and PS3 making giant strides in the video on demand market, Nintendo has confirmed that it too is to enter the sector with a rival service for both Wii and DS.

Nintendo president Saturo Iwata explained that the Wii will become the hub of the new service, with DS owners then able to transfer content to their portable for viewing on the move.

“When the service begins, you'll see how we're going to do it differently in a Nintendo-like way,” Iwata told The Wall Street Journal. “There are a lot of on-demand video services, so there’s no reason to do the same thing, so we’re going to do something different.”

There’s no release date for the service as of yet, but a Japanese trial release later this year is a distinct possibility.
