NPD: Sony talks software not hardware in March response

Killzone 2 reaches a million units sold worldwide whilst PS2 enjoys “positive sales momentum”

Sony neglected to make any mention of PS3 hardware sales in its response to NPD’s March numbers, which showed year-on-year declines for the machine, and instead chose to focus on its unquestionably strong 2009 software line-up.

Guerilla’s Killzone 2 has now sold more than one million copies worldwide since its release at the end of February. It’s an important sales milestone for the incredibly polished shooter, but the numbers are at odds with pre-release claims that the game had received 1.1m pre-orders in Europe.

Sony added that the recently discounted PS2 “is seeing positive internal sales momentum”.

A statement from the company read: “SCEA is staged for yet another breakout fiscal year with a broad range of highly anticipated PS3 exclusives, including inFamous, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, MAG, Heavy Rain, God of War III, and Rachet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time.”
