LittleBigPlanet price plummets

Media Molecule's critically loved title hits the £10 mark six months after release

The price of acclaimed PS3 title LittleBigPlanet has tumbled to around £10, six months after it was released.

The Media Molecule-developed title has an SRP of £44.99, but can be found at online retailers – including DVD.co.uk – for £10.89, while Play and Amazon have the title on sale for £12.99.

The aggressive discounting has even seen the game dip below the price of its official strategy guide. However, Sony feels the reduced cost can make the product more attractive to new customers.

“In general the retail environment is very tough at present, but the positive consequence is that when consumers are feeling the need to monitor their spending there are still some attractive deals to be had if people shop around,” said a Sony spokesperson.

“It is commonly accepted that in times of economic hardship, people value their entertainment. And the multiple hours of entertainment value represented in a video game can makes games a more attractive purchase, especially at a discounted price.”

LittleBigPlanet was greeted to positive press when it was released last year, achieving a Metacritic average of 95. And Sony revealed earlier this month that the game has reached two million global users. LittleBigPlanet also makes revenue through DLC, with new costumes and add-ons made available on a weekly basis.

LittleBigPlanet has since become a new franchise for Sony, with a PSP version due later this year.

They need to make an xbox version. ps3's community are not the type to really enjoy this game (on an overall scale) whereas the xbox community has a lot of casual gamers. in fact if this would come to xbox, i would be willing to pay over a hundred dollars for it, and i would get xbox live gold just for it! i think that if they want to make more sales this is the obvious choice...

Ahah, the article clearly states the game has shifted 2 million and I can tell you first hand that the ps3 community enjoys the game very much. If you're are prepared to spend that kind of money on the game then why not buy a PS3 and a cheap copy of the game.

Xbox Version would help

The game was originally pitched to MS and they laughed at the idea for the game. And if your talking about MS having a bigger casual gaming market then why not just release it on Wii. The biggest casual game market of them all is on the Wii. And stating that the PS3 Community are not the type to really enjoy the game is still biased even if you put in on an overall scale! I own every console from the last 15 or so years and a few other from before that and I believe PS3 is the ideal home for LBP. I will admit Xbox Live is better than PSN but realistically how many people would fork out the £40/€60 a year for Xbox Live if all they're getting it for is LBP... Now lets have less fanboy-ish posts on the matter!

1) It's not £40 unless you buy blindly at the first Game you walk into, I got 13 months for £29.
2) People bought a PS3 for this game, so what makes you think they wouldn't spend £29 to play it online.

So yes, less fanboy-ish posts, but how about less fiction too?

Casual...?

The single player string of pre-loaded levels is decidedly casual, yes, but if you want to get your money's worth out of the game, you build a well-designed level yourself and publish it for others to play, and I can tell you that that aspect is most definitely NOT a casual experience. It takes a long time to make a popular level, and creating/sharing is two thirds of the game's value. Not only that, but you need enough hard drive space to store the levels you create, and the copious amounts of stuff you win in user-created levels.

I've seen better platformers that are at least 20 years older than LBP, so I'll pass if there's a sequel.

LBP fills an important niche

I bought LBP soon after it came out (for $60 Cdn), enjoyed it briefly (~3-4 weeks) and haven't played it much since. I don't regret the purchase because there aren't many other good side-scrollers for the PS3 and my girlfriend and I can play this together. Making levels is really hard but also rewarding and fun. My biggest gripe is that I could never connect with my friends online well... constant bugs and glitches in joining games as a party really killed my interest in it. The pre-loaded levels were pretty cool, but short... the real goods for the game are the user-created levels. Mario Galaxy held my interest much longer and I found it way more innovative and interesting , but beyond that the Wii had pretty much nada (except for a gamecube port of Zelda). Considering the user-created content and level editor, plus real multiplayer action (I'm looking at you nintendo...stupid star zapping), and the lack of similar options on the PS3 platform, LBP is pretty sweet. If only the online multiplayer wasn't so buggy..... rant over.

littlebigplanet is a third party title...it's made by media molecule duh? sony only publish it under a partnership deal. no reason to suspect it won't appear on other platforms if sales are considered too low. bioshock is on ps3, is it not? hell, rare make games for nintendo, and they ARE a first party microsoft company.

Sony shot themselves in the foot.

Sony totally shot themselves in the foot by hard bundling such a big release as this with the console. Buy console bundles, break down stock, sell game solus at discount, meaning a AAA release got rapidly devalued by cheap stock flooding the market.

Re: greendude,

MS aquired Rare quite some time ago. Before the 360 was released.

Back on topic. I got LBP with my PS3 in December and really didn't enjoy it that much. SMB3 is a far superior platformer. Making your own levels is great, but if you collect too many stickers it starts to take an age to load.

A great idea, but the final product just didn't impress me much.

Actually on MM's site they say "we are working hard to bring you The Next Big Thing ™ on PS3" which suggest they will only be working on PS3 games.

Also i'm pretty sure Sony owns the LBP IP.

Well..... lots of valid points. However as a video game online retailer with a particularly popular site on Ebay, I am experienced enough to to say that this game is the worst pre-order we have ever dealt with and it is the only No. 1 Pre-order that we have refused to re-stock, after the release date, due to poor sales and the fact that the game was absolute hype.
