Lifetime Final Fantasy sales hit 85m units

Japanese developer and publisher Square Enix has revealed some global lifetime sales figures for its biggest owned IPs – and unsurprisingly it’s Final Fantasy that leads the charge.

The acclaimed RPG series, whose 13th instalment is due to be released in Japan later this year and in the West some time in 2010, has sold a huge 85m copies across the world, Kotaku reports.

This includes all numbered releases as well as spin-off titles.

More big numbers come from Dragon Quest, which has sold a total of 47m globally – a number that’s all the more impressive when you consider its late arrival and limited appeal in both America and Europe.

Square Enix’ third best selling IP is Kingdom Hearts, with sales totalling 12m.
