Empire staff’s anger grows over ‘dreadful circumstances’

Upset employees await fate – as doomed company begins making departments redundant

Employees of Empire Interactive are experiencing ‘dreadful circumstances’ as the company drags its feet over confirming their fate.

MCV broke the news on Friday that the firm had fallen into administration, and that all staff are expected to be made redundant this week.

One employee told us: “On Friday, MCV scooped an official email from the director to Empire staff by nearly two hours. This official email says that staff won't be told until next week what is to happen to them.

“Your article, as timely and newsworthy as it was, does not at all do justice to the dreadful circumstances of the past few months.

"Also, we should not forget the creditors that will not be paid. Some of these are small enterprises and Empire's collapse may hit them hard.”

Another added: “Nothing’s been confirmed, but it looks as if everyone’s going to be called in one by one and told there’s no job to come back to. I’ve already been informed. It’s a very sad situation.”

One angry employee chose MCV’s messageboards to vent: “Well thanks for letting your staff know Empire here on MCV that we all no longer have jobs thanks a lot! I guess I'll have to ask the [administrators] when I'm getting paid for the month of March and April!”

Russian distributor and publisher Noviy Disk seemed a likely White Knight last month, but the two firms could not finalise terms.

Administrator KPMG was subsequently called in two weeks ago to find a buyer. MCV understands it received two expressions of interest, but these never grew into firm offers.

KPMG is expected to release an official announcement this afternoon.

MCV has contacted Empire’s US parent Silverstar Holdings for more information.

Sad day

Always enjoyed the passion and energy Empire had during my many years working with them as distribution partners while running Vivendi Universal Games....Flat Out was certainly a great try at building a franchise....best of luck to everyone..no more Vivendi left to help small publishers develop games for PPG...

Can you blame the employees?

In response to the angry employee, can you really blame him/her? I mean, How can they let others know before informing their own staff members. It just shows how much they actually value their staff and respect them. The way im told this was handled is very bad and Empire really owed it to the staff to at least inform them before making it public....

Shame that the story couldn't have been held back a little.

Case off never letting integrity get in the way of journalism though I guess?

Why should the story have been held off?

The staff have kepy quiet over this whole affair for months, and look at where things are now. I can't see how keeping a lid on things would benefit anyone other than those who have been screwing the staff over for the past two months.

The idea of someone in upper management at Empire lecturing anyone on integrity is quite hilarious...

What an insensitive view Anon. I think the situation was dire enough without some rag printing that their jobs had gone before they had been told. That is of course unless it was an official press release...?

If, as seems more likely, this was leaked info then the next port of call would be for a statement from the company on their intentions.

I remember MVC doing something similar when Activision shed jobs back in 2005 and saw people at their desks in tears; guttersnipe journalism.

As far as I am aware staff are still being kept waiting - with no official word on their future or the salaries they have been waiting fo the past two months. I believe the only news they have received are watch this space emails that randomly ping in from the US. People have lives, families and responsibilities and at no point have these been factored into Empire's owners plans. MCV reports on the industry for better or worse. Empire was a part of that industry for a long time and as such the story needed reporting, this is far from guttersnipe journalism. Passing the blame to MCV is unjust. Empire management should and need to take responsibility for this situation and their staff.

Disgraceful

I for one think its appalling that Empire management couldn't have been been more supportive of their staff, it is disgraceful to have to find out that they are jobless (and also not likely to be paid anytime soon?) via a third party. What sort of people keep their loyal staff hanging onto the small nugget of hope that the company will sort itself out, to the point that the most loyal of staff who stuck around are basically brushed off with utter disrespect? I hope the Directors and management do not forget their staff members, who i guess after not being paid for months will feel sick at the sight of some kid paying £30 for FlatOut2 etc in the shops...

Critic of MCV misses point. Staff in office on Friday were told everyone would be made redundant on Monday when the administrators came in. Grapevine reached MCV before some staff - bad but symptomatic. True to form the administrators didn't come in and the redundancies weren't made - staff still have no reliable information. Indeed no information except it will happen at some point. Precedent strongly suggests statements would be false. Does the critic not understand that the staff have been stitched up?

Anon and on

I posted this on the other thread but its probably more relevant here:

Another day and still no official news!! We have all been left in a horrible state of limbo, treated with utter contempt with complete disregard for employees personal circumstances. Unless we are made redundant we cannot claim benefits, statutory redundancy pay or claim on insurance. What are they expecting people to live on? How are we to meet mortgage or rent payments and feed our families? The end of another month without pay and still no decision to put us all out of our misery.

Come on, what's the hold up? Have the decency to do the right thing by your employees. After the loyalty and patience shown by the staff the least we deserve is to be treated with some diginity, not just cast aside like trash when it no longer suits your needs.

This whole affair is starting to make me feel physically sick!

I as an employee of Empire Interactive have yet to receive any official update from either company director Clive of Silverstar Holdings or from KPMG. Why is Empire Interactive not in administration yet? They have been unable to pay anyone for over 2 months ... what is the hold up. I for one believe that the set of circumstances here need to be investigated by industry press to avoid something like this happening ever again.

the only chance Empires administration will happen soon is if one of its creditors issues a winding up order. otherwise this will drag on and on because its not in the interest of the owners to go into admin. someone else has to press the button for anything to be resolved this side of christmas

Personally myfriend post 12 hit the nail on the head. However post 12 also forgot 1 important piece of information. The simple fact is how long can the staff remain in the way they are at now? 2 weeks? 1 month? 2 months? I believe the moment the staff start resigning this will hasten the situation up. Dont forget if your made redundant legally the company still owes you. If you resign you are owed nothing. The more people that resign the less the payout. Personally i believe that is one of the main reasons.

And i second Post 13, If a creditor is reading this, please push it through, you are likely not going to get your money so have it in your heart and at least help the employees who are stuck helpless in this situation...
