Gosen: Industry doesn’t get the credit it deserves

European Xbox Marketing boss and former MD of Nintendo Europe writes exclusively for MCV

David Gosen, the current vice president of marketing for EMEA Xbox and former head of Nintendo Europe, has admitted that he believes the games industry doesn’t get the recognition or thanks that it deserves from both the wider public and government.

“It frustrates me that from a public standpoint, the industry still hasn’t got the stature, credibility and cut through that we all deserve,” Gosen stated in a piece written exclusively for MCV.

“I still get the sense we’re sandwiched somewhere between corporate bankers and taxmen in terms of society’s general perception.

“We should be as loved as Hollywood is or the music industry is. Yet we are not. That’s not because people aren’t trying. But there seems to be a barrier of acceptance. When we’re saving the High Street and bringing families back together again, we should be recognised for that.”

The problem is as an industry gaming is still growing. It is the proverbial adolescent who still yearns to blow things up with little understanding of emotion and the adult art of storytelling. However I believe there will come a day when video games are able to rival the very best that Hollywood has to offer whilst retaining all the advantages that an interactive story has to offer. When that happens acceptance will come, quite possibly at the expense of older forms of entertainment.
