Confirmed: Empire goes into administration

KPMG appointed to handle shut-down for troubled UK publisher; 49 staff made redundant

Empire Interactive has finally and officially been put into administration, MCV can reveal.

KPMG was appointed to handle the administration of the firm on Friday, May 1st.

49 staff have been made redundant at the company with six being kept on to help KPMG with the process, the administrator told MCV today.

We first revealed that the publisher was on the brink over a week ago.

Since then owner Silverstar Holdings had tried to convince other outlets that a decision had not been made, and other sites suggested that the company would survive.

Yet an internal memo obtained by MCV proved that it was 'highly likely' the firm would go into administration soon.

We also understand that staff left in limbo and without pay for the last two months were considering legal action against the firm's owners to force the company to be closed if administrators were not appointed soon.

A full statement from KPMG is expected shortly.
