Fellow Britsoft publisher steps in to organise farewell bash for beleaguered ex-employees
Mastertronic has offered to throw former Empire staff a 'wake' – in response to a request from an ex-employee in today's MCV magazine.
A venue is yet to be decided, but the non-formal event will take place next week on Thursday, May 21st.
One of the 49 employees made redundant by Empire – the majority of which went without pay for their final eight weeks at the company – wrote into MCV this week to ask the industry to organise a farewell bash.
"We will put a few quid behind the bar and meet in a boozer," Mastertronic boss Andy Payne told MCV today.
"There's no specific time for kick off to make it fancy. Just show up and find me. I will buy ex-Empire staff all the drinks they can drink."
Any ex-Empire employees interested in attending should contact Andy Payne by clicking here.

But for the grace of God....
Thursday 21st May - Cross Keys in Endell St Covent Garden, London, Englad (in case our American buds are coming) from 6.30pm - Some of you will remember it from Christmas time, it is 'bijou' but homely. Make yourself know to me and I will buy all Empire's ex-staff members drinks. We had our shaky period last year and came through it, just, so I know what it is like to struggle. The least we can do is give you a night out. Everyone in the games industry is welcome, can't say my wallet will stretch to all of you, but I am sure we can have a good night.
ah-ha ha ha ha ha ha
Andy,
THAT is hilarious, but I will take you up on that drink,
Cheers
DB
can't say no
What a wonderful gesture. We did ask Clive but...
Thanks Andy. I'll see you there and hopefully the rest of Empire.
Great guy
Never got the job but when you meet Andy you can tell he's a great guy.
well done and have a great time.
Maybe OPM should buy the next round?!
Peace and Love
Dan
Very kind of Andy
Down to my last few quid! Lol. I will try my up most to attend, as saying goodbye to people I’ve worked with for years would be nice. Either way I think it’s very kind of Andy to have made this offer to us and hope to make it! :) Much appreciated Andy.
What a Guy!
Fair play to Andy, I'll be away otherwise I would have come down. best of luck to all my old Empire Chums and good luck in the future.
Thanks
Thanks for this Andy that is a great thing to do for us, it would be great to see thew guys and rause a glass or three
Ranting is good
My only indulgence will be to tell those that want to listen what I think about blokes like this Clive goon. Clive, if you can make it come on over, I can tell you to your face about how to deal with people who gave everything mate. You could at least pay them what you owe couldn't you.....
Legend...as always
Andy,
Stealing a line from Morrisy/Marr, You never fail to impress others with your ability to make us all realize we are just humans and need to be loved....from time to time.
Community is a buzz word in the games industry thats gets banded around from time to time, your kind offer for all the poorly treated ex Empire staff I'm sure will mean a vast amount to them all personally and it really brings home and reinforces the true spirit of UK Games Community.
As mentioned by Dan, it would be a nice idea to get the likes of OPM (Hi Kim) & Aardvark Swift (Hi Ian) to assist you in clearing the bar bill and maybe assisting some ex Empire staff in getting back into the business that we are all so passionate about.
Bless You.
Stephen
There is some love left!
Heartwarming to see this kind of thing happen...
It just goes to show that not everyone in business is a hard nosed, black hearted, gold digging, selfish scumbag.
Three cheers for Andy!
Andy
Now I'm not involved in the games industry myself, but it something I'm looking into getting into in the future. And it's things like this that make me to look forward to it. It's irregular in any business enviroment (especially in the current economy) that someone would or some company would be willing to do this as for anyone else. It clearly shows that the gaming industry is just like a big family. Everyone trying to help each other out but at the same time constantly competing to do one up on each other... if that's not what a family is I don't know what is.
On a different note I'm based in Ireland and was thinking about going to Derby to do a course in Games Dev, would any of you have any recomendations on whether or not it would be a good place to do a course like that.
So how did it go?
Do tell !!! And what was the conclusion on who owns New World IP?
It went well
It was a lovely evening, and nice to meet a load of good people. Thanks to Si Jeffrey for helping out. Just who does own the IP - good question. Look out for it when it comes up from the sewer and avoid it like the plague. Tainted Love.
Very well indeed
A big thanks to Andy and Simon for the drinks!
It was very much appreciated and there was a good friendly crowd.
Clive did turn up...unfortunately it was Clive Owen!
Thank you
Thank you Andy for your kind generosity. Was lovely to meet you and great to see a lot of my old work buddies again :-)
Good luck
Thanks to everyone who came and spoke to us and made us feel welcome, thanks to Andy for the drink and hoping we can help some of you guys stay in the industry. Good luck over the next few months and hope opportunities open up for you all. John and Dan from OPM.
Many Thanks
Thanks to all who made the evening happen, it was great to see all the guys from Empire again and to have a send off which we all enjoyed very much.
Big thanks to Simon, the OPM guys and to MCV for helping us make this event. A very big cheers to Andy for sorting out the evening and making sure that nobody went without.
It was not been a very happy time for all of us but Thursday was a fantastic way for all of us to say goodbye.
As Vera Lynn said:
We'll meet again, dont know where, dont know when but I hope we meet again some sunny day!
