UK CHARTS: Wii Fit nearing record

Seven weeks on the trot and 16th time at no.1 for Nintendo’s fitness sensation

Nintendo’s Wii Fit has topped the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40 for the 16th time this week – if the title can manage to claim two more chart crowns it will level the long-standing record of Eidos’ Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

It’s the seventh week in a row that Wii Fit has held on to the top spot. After the long-running stock shortages throughout 2008, the renewed supply in 2009 has finally allowed the game to hit its potential in the UK.

There’s little change elsewhere in the Top 10, aside from the entry of Eidos’ Battlestations: Pacific in tenth spot.

Elsewhere FIFA 09 climbs one space to reclaim second position at the expense of Activision Blizzard’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which drops one to third slot. The only other new faces in the Top 40 are a pair of re-entries – Microsoft’s Halo 3 claims 33rd whilst Nintendo’s Mystery Case Files: Millionheir snatches 37th.

The ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 10 in full (for the week ending May 16th):
1. Wii Fit (Nintendo)
2. FIFA 09 (EA)
3. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Activision Blizzard)
4. Call of Duty: World at War (Activision Blizzard)
5. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo)
6. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom)
7. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Sega)
8. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo)
9. Wii Play (Nintendo)
10. Battlestations: Pacific (Eidos)

What an inspiring Top 10. Is that really the shape of the market at this time of year? Left over Christmas annual franchises and a few decent Wii and DS games from years ago.
