UPDATED: UK platform exclusivity in the works as Microsoft attempts to up 360’s 2009 software slate
**UPDATED: MCV understands that whilst an exclusivity deal with Microsoft is currently in the works, the contract has not yet been finalised. An Activision spokesperson told MCV to refer to its original THR statement, which named 360, PS3 and Wii as the supported formats.**
The UK arm of publisher Activision Blizzard has announced that the upcoming Tony Hawk: Ride will be an Xbox 360 exclusive in the UK.
When officially revealed earlier this week, Ride was touted for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii – platforms it will presumably still be released on outside of the UK.
Microsoft is not a stranger to deals such as this, with EA’s massively hyped Rock Band also tied in to an exclusivity period in the UK whilst gamers in America got multi-platform support.
Sony, too, has recently played the 'exclusive' card, signing up Atari's Ghostbusters for the PS3.

Bear in mind, too, that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 exclusive E3 slate is likely to be a little thin on the ground this year – a fact the Redmond firm will be looking to address in light of PS3’s very impressive 2009 release line-up.

umm
Won't PS3 owners, at least, just import the game from Europe then? Or the US? PS3 is region free.
Seems like a really dumb move. What's the point? I can see how MS needs to shore up a lack of exclusives this year but blocking previously announced multiplatform games from other platforms seems desperate. Bring us some of your own new games MS!
re: umm
umm Jake didn't Sony do the same thing recently by making Ghostbuster's an exclusive? Please end the fan boy comments
Just import
Looks like Microsoft are REALLY desperate for exclusives right now (as a result of buying game exclusivity in the past, rather than Sony's strategy of buying studios).
PS3 owners need not worry, PS3 is region-free for PS3 games, so buy from anywhere you want. Infact, I suspect Play and Amazon which both have Jersey based operations will be selling this from France anyway. Sorry Microsoft, you lose.
I am also suspicious that may attracy anti-competition lawsuits. I mean clearly Activision Blizzard HAVE a PS3 version to sell (as it's available outside the UK), but Microsoft have bribed them to withold the PS3 version in the UK. Is this legal? It's surely borderline illegal.
Hmm
"umm Jake didn't Sony do the same thing recently by making Ghostbuster's an exclusive? Please end the fan boy comments". You jumped to 360 defence quickly and yet you want fan boy comments ending! Jake is right though and Tony Hawk games are rubbish now! Skate has taken over, I hope it is a good game because I enjoy playing good games, but let's think this one through guys. Nobody cares about TH.
Wow...
Look at you all go. Stuart, you are as bad my friend, AH & Jake both make valid points. Although both are very fanboy based, And Mark the true fanboy stating desperation, bribary & illegallity from MS. Your inside information on MS is amazing, but also how you managed to put the word "PS3" in your post 5 times in an article that has mainly to do with Microsoft. Wow just wow. Remind me, I thought MCV was for people in the industry..?
who cares
another game with an expensive periharel, and games are over priced in the UK, doesnt bother me, MS can go for it, sony are much better puttin their cash into 1st party games like the New team ico game, proj trico, MAG, Demon souls, WHite knight etc etc.
and as already mentioned if ps3 owners want this game, play asia and ebay will have plenty on offer, i cant see too many ps3 customers being to worried over this, but we have already had alot of angry xbox customers over the ghostbusters deal.
Whats with all these comments?
Chill out guys... and who the hell is somy?
for the record..
..I think the ghostbusters deal was equally shitty. Games that are announced as multiplatform should remain multi.
However, I believe Atari is pulling out of PAL markets and delaying games there, correct? So in the case of Ghostbusters, Sony may have been stepping in to prevent a delay on its platform rather than artificially blocking its release (albeit temporarily) on other platforms. It seems likely the game would have been delayed in Pal territories on all systems without the Sony deal.
All of these deals seem pretty pointless to me though. Blocking previously multiplatform games from release on another platform is a pretty crappy way to get exclusives.
you are correct
yep this is right atari is selling its last remiaing shares of the european arm of atari, so i think sony got that deal, its only a uk deal,
but i think this activision deal is a money deal since MS dont have many exclussives so far, im sure they have plans to unveil at e3 but if the name halo is in an announcement i may die of boredom
Fanboy
OK, we've given you lot quite a bit of leeway on this one, but Rodney has pushed the boat a little too far. We're going to delete that comment.
Doubtful
It is most likely an exclusive period, in an attempt to sell as many copies with the skateboard peripheral as possible, just as Sony want to make a big deal about releasing the Ghostbusters game on the same day as it releases bluray discs of the films - it is also possible that they want to put the film on the game disc (an ability that they were touting a while back).
idiots
well for starters ghostbusters is a TIMED exclusive, it will still come out on 360 and wii. making a game pure exclusive after announcing it is just microsoft using there bully boy tactics again. atari were selling the rights to stuff in a bid to stay a float and sony capitalized. they haven't prevented the game coming onto 360 its just delayed.
in my opinion i think microsoft are stupid and forget that it doesn't matter to ps3 owners if u block a game in our region. coz we can import probably cheaper than the uk retail price anyway. ps3 come up clean again.
Benefits?
Many of you forget that the Tony Hawk series appeals to both the casual and the hardcore audiences, yeah sure the hardcore will know where to get an import but the majority of the casual audience will probably not even be aware the PS3 is region free! Microsoft will gain some benefit from this exclusive deal but it probably won't be worth the amount they paid for it, but still if anything its another IP to brag about. Just to bring my fanboy thoughts to the table Microsoft and Sony rule!
LoL
The tony hawks series appeals to both the casual and the hardcore?
didnt all of the skaters jump ship when Skate came out? :P
sorry kiddies, but as much as i sound like a fanboy, microsoft screwed up bad with this deal
