MICROSOFT: Metal Gear Solid IS coming to 360

E3'09: Hideo Kojima confirms the news that many have been predicting for months

Konami’s legendary games producer Hideo Kojima has announced that his next Metal Gear Solid adventure will be released on Xbox 360.

Dubbed Metal Gear Solid Rising, the game will return to the adventures of MGS2 adventurer Raiden and not famed series favourite Solid Snake.

Little is known of the game, other than the fact that Kojima described it as a brand new type of game that differs significantly from its predecessors.

The news also seems to confirm that MGS5 will not be coming to Xbox 360. The bigger question now is this – will Metal Gear Solid Rising be coming to PS3?

to be fair, raiden was a bit wank. metal gear solid has always been about solid snake, and i guess thats what makes them mgs games (mgs 2 was amazing.... but still wasnt the same when you played as raiden) i dont see it as a big loss.

Disappointing for the fanboys...

All in all I'm glad - we all knew Konami could afford to keep the MGS franchise exclusive just as no Publisher can afford to keep their franchises exclusive this gen without a substantial cash injection (something Sony don't need to do thanks to their extensive 1st party roster).

But this is NOT MGS4, Kojima's crowning moment - the rumours are true MGS4 IS only possible on PS3! 360 fanboys can pretend to be happy about this, but deep down this is not the news they wanted - they were happy about FFXIII because it was the same game.

This is a brand new none Snake franchise featuring a spin-off character with no details of game type or graphical capability. No PS3 owner, fanboy or otherwise, will be upset, surprised or annoyed that this NEW franchise is a multiplatform one.

Overall it summed up their E3 for me - they were desperately trying to make the announcements bigger than they were to the point that the presenter seemed to spend more time clapping himself that the audience did!

Their exclusive line-up was WEAK - this is what 360 owners have been waiting for? Some Halo 3 DLC, another Halo game in 2010, the long delayed Alan Wake in 2010 (looking a lot worse than it did in 2005 and rather like an Alone in the Dark clone), Forza Motorsport later this year, and some Live games - hardly a great line-up of exclusives.

As for Forza what's with the huge over emphasis on being the "definitive driving game of this generation", have they got GT5 envy or something? GT5 + Car Damage = better than Forza 3!

Then we have the big news of Facebook & Twitter aps - also known as "we've given up trying to do console browser so this will have to do" - I've been able to visit Facebook/Twitter on PS3 from day one!

Then we have the grand finale - the Wii killer - otherwise known as the PS Eye! I'm sorry I'm sure there's more clever tech to it than that but A LOT of what was shown was very similar to the PS Eye launch trailer back in 2005/6 - face recognition, picking up in-game objects, drawing/scanning in images, motion driven menus, talking to in-game characters (Eyedentity) - it's all been show for PS Eye already. And just like the Eye trailer the MS guy also used that classic get out of jail free card - "Our Vision" for what you "could" do with the technology. I didn't see anything that couldn't be done with the Eye or has already been done on the Eyetoy.

Also I'm not sure I like the idea of pretending to hold things - non-gamers like holding the Wiimote because it's like a TV remote, and it's something tangible that they move to get a result - cause and effect - I'm not sure no gamers would be comfortable with pretending they're holding a steering wheel in their hand. Also did I miss it or did they not announce a date or price?

Also this will bring a collective "meh" from the 360 core hardcore audience, unless the fanboys suddenly all start pretending to love the idea of motion control and Eyetoy style control!

@2: "But this is NOT MGS4, Kojima's crowning moment - the rumours are true MGS4 IS only possible on PS3!"

I'm sorry, you're nothing but a gamer, so take your game knowledge to the more relevant sites and try and impress people there. Because here, you simply make yourself look like a fool.

If you think you can try and preach things like that on a games industry site, then you have serious delusions about where your knowledge sits on the development ladder. I'll let you into a secret, it's just below the feet, holding the ladder in place.

This isn't a place for ignorant fanboys, so take it elsewhere.

It probably isn't possible Redh3lix, but that isn't his reasoning for calling him a fool. Look at his post? are you seriously backing this guy up? That is nothing but a massive tirade/rant against a brand called Microsoft. Whether you love them or hate them is fair enough, but to post an eleven paragraphed rant of all things against them is slightly over the top... I think LeeC has every right to say what he did.

More to the point, it's nice that gamers can now share this franchise (Metal Gear) when they release this latest game.

I find it hard to believe it's not possible as it has an awful lot of loading spots. If you put it on 4 discs or something and had it load off a different disk each time (I think there were 4 major loading points?) it might work? Unless it relies heavily on having that multi-core architecture.

Xbox

Saddened Xbox Fan.

Now I'm no developer but as a gamer and owner of all the consoles I do have to agree(to a certain degree) with PS3 owner. The announcements aren't something I'm overly excited about.

2 new Halo's!! I know it's a big franchise but I would like to see what else Bungie can do. Personally I didn't like Halo 3 so I doubt I'll be buying either.

Rockband getting an extre song for DLC... albeit the Beatles are one of the biggest bands of all time this isn't going to sell as well as Guitar Hero: Metallica. The Beatles aren't as popular amongst the target audience of the GH and RB as Metallica are. So an extra song here won't make me run out to buy it(no matter what console it's on) Albeit somewhat cool that two members of The Beatles opened the show for MS!

Again with the Facebook and Twitter etc, this is available on both my PS3, Wii, PSP... even on my mobile, so giving me one more way of accessing these doesn't seem like a big announcement at all to me. At the same time I do want to see what type of partership it will be with Sky(especially in the Republic of Ireland area)

And then we get to the Natal, no need for the Xbox 720 as we now have this peripheral that will appeal to the mass market but not to the hardcore fans. I'm all for innovation but I despise the Wii, so how is an improved version of the Wii technology going to make me want to buy this peripheral. Truth is it isn't. I agree with (if I remember correctly) Cliff "Epic" Bleszinski that the Wii is a virus, one person buys it plays it for 3 weeks, in that time one there friends were over and played and decided oh I need to buy this. By the time they buy the original person has stopped playing there's. So I can see this selling well for MS but can't see it being a reason to stop making a 720 (or even a 540 - BD drive, wireless as standard, etc!)

Overall the only announcments that I found to be good was the fact that some of the DLC for MW2(even if it's only time exclusive) CoD has always been a game that HAS to be played on Xbox) Also the fact that FFXIII is going to (more than likely) be released at the same time as PS3 counterpart (although this will be a game that I will be buying PS3)

The overall announcements that I have seen have been rather disappointing. I was hoping that Xbox with come out with some major 1st party titles to compete with the PS3 first party titles. But unfortunately I have been left feeling as if I've been slapped across the face with a fish. Now don't get me wrong PS3 could potentially be just as bad but I don't think it could be worse.

Hurry up MW2 and make me happy to own my Xbox again.

What the bet "Saddened Xbox fan" and "PS3 Owner" have the same I.P address. It's just uncanny. The amount of effort some people put in.

Hate to break it to you Jimothy but no we wouldn't be... it's just my honest opionion of all that has been announced. As stated though PS3's could be just as bad, but I was expecting better from MS, they're the ones that have been leading the way on the big games the last few years. And if you must know I'm a bigger Xbox fan that PS3. More games, more play time, I do thinik that overall the PS3 is the better console but I've always thought Xbox had the better games.

And that statement comes from someone who works for Sony...

My E3 thoughts

You know I really dispise this generation for the sole fact that it contains the largest and most irrational bunch of fanboys I have ever seen. That being said I too expected a little more from MS this time out. OK you got more Halo coming but that doesn't change the fact that ODST is a most a 5 hour romp (it is just an expansion) and we don't even know what kind of game Halo Reach is, but it sure as hell is not Halo 4 (an MMO perhaps). Alan Wake looks like a great game but I expected more from it, the way it was originally pitched it seemed like more then just a Silent Hill/Alone in the Dark type game but still was the best game they showed. Crackdown 2 looked like it might be cool but with the new developer I think the direction has changed, but not sure if its for the best (it sounds too familiar to gears) the other problem is that most of the big stuff was 2010 and beyond. The Metal Gear announcement was expected but in reality it's not really Metal Gear it's just the name (its a DMC style action game), also given the fact that the game first showed up in a PS3 japanese mag I think it was all too clear that what MS had paid for was already coming to PS3. Natal was very interesting from a tech stand point but I am not a big fan of motion control, and without a physical device to hold I think I would feel even sillier then I do playing the Wii, also with no concrete release how do we know it wont just get delayed until the next Xbox comes out? Splinter Cell looks great but it remains to be seen if the game is different enough to actually evolve the original formula.

Also where the heck is Rare? No new Perfect Dark, no Killer Instinct, no Conkers not even avatar clothes. Why not show us what they have? Also when is MS game studios going to step it up and be more then just a publisher, they need to sign some talent and put together at least one triple A team that they dont have to pay for a six month exclusive contract.

E3 After-thoughts

I am a multi-platform gamer, owning PC/360/PS3/Wii ...To me the biggest announcement of E3 for microsoft was the new Splinter Cell game. I haven't seen that discussed much in here, so I thought I'd bring it up. It simply looks amazing! I only wish it wasn't an exclusive so we could see what the core could make it do, as I think it would be a better play on the ps3... but we'll have to make do (and probably wont worry about it too much!)

Other than that I agree with the consensus that the Microsoft E3 was pretty blah. Looks like they reversed roles this year and are now playing industry catch-up.

Re: Bungie - Kill Halo already, the game has been garbage since the first beta. What is it with Devs running franchises into the ground? (hint hint Kojima) And is it just me or did the Bungie rep seem to be an uber-nerd... he overused the catch phrases "halo reach DROPS into stores near you in 2050" and several other similar phrases.. I found it annoying the way he was talking like their games are the best around even pre-release. With the FPS shooters of today, halo or halo15 doesn't stand a chance.

Final thought: plzplzplz be the last MGS game... don't milk the franchise, let it go out on top.
