MICROSOFT: Global 'Games on Demand' service heading to 360

E3'09: New service lets users download newer releases direct to console

Microsoft has revealed that it will be offering a Games on Demand service for Xbox 360 in just a matter of months.

Games on Demand launches this August and will let console owners download 360 games direct to their console.

It's not yet clear if these 'full retail games' as they were described - the demo shown to journalists after the format holder's E3 press conference showed titles like Assassin's Creed, Burnout Paradise and BioShock - will have day and date release with physical SKUs or if the releases would be more staggered and allow titles to 'premiere' at retail first.

"Live has been super successful around digital distrubiton from XBLA to Originals and DLC," said Xbox Live's Marc Whitten. "This is a natural progression."

He added that new games will be added to the service every week.

The service also ditches the MS Points payment system, and instead allows players to purchase direct with a credit card in actual currency.

Games on Demand also offers an Amazon-like user-rating system.

Whitten confirmed to MCV that the service will launch worldwide.

"We 've talked lcosely with our retail partners on this - it is not a zero sum or win-lose situation," he said when asked about retail reaction to the service, saying that it just added a new way to purchase games.

Retail is "not going away - it's still really important" he added.

I'm all for digital downloads for games.....but where are these massive hard drives that are going to carry them all. If MS let me up load to a portable hard drive or realese an effordable TB hard drive for the 360 then I'll jump for joy and never leave my couch. MMMM healthy living lol

Don't think that is going to happen somehow Jon, but they'll no doubt offer cheap refurbed 120GB hard drives for those who need a bigger HDD.

Game Share Price

Either this isn't seen as a threat to retail or the news isn't widespread yet but their has been no reaction to this news by Game Groups share price 169 at writing.

Personally the detail is key is this -

1 Back Catalog game or....
2 New Releases (I can imagine a lot of people pre-downloading Modern warfare 2 waiting for it to become playable at midnight the day of release)
3 Will publishers use their outdated RRP as a basis for the price? Can't see many people paying 4999 for a download of Fifa 2010.
or......
4 They will undercut retail.

Knowing Microsoft they will decide to launch games on release day on Live. Is this the beginning of the end for the retailers??...Microsoft selling to customer means there is no need for the distributors and retailers...will Sony step up its current offering?? Will they all go Direct2Customer??...

Payment

If they don't offer more methods of payment, then they will miss out on a lot of sales. There have been many times I've been short of points and not bought an item because they only take American Express, Visa and Mastercard. For those of us with debit cards issued by the likes of Maestro, the old fashioned buying codes from a shop is pretty much all we have. (I refuse to use eBay and PayPal since it became crap).

I can use my Maestro card via PSN, so regardless of whether it's points or real currency, if they only offer three methods of payment, they are limiting their potential market. Great (albeit inevitable) idea, but try and equal that with a great implementation too...

Why? Why?

I don't know about anyone else but im one of those people that absolutely must a have a hard copy of a full game, XBLA games are great but a proper full game must be on a disc. I am a Customer who buys 40 + games a year on all consoles and the day digital distribution is mandatory is the day I strictly limit my purchase. Also I think shopping is great, and finding the game you want, id even go as far to say its a hobby. Unfortunately the only obstacle I see standing in the way of total digital distribution in the future is the Wii and its demographic, as the type of payment and process of buying a game is more conplicated and will most likely not appeal to those with little experience purchasing digital products.
