E3'09: New handheld device works with PlayStation Eye to track gamers' movement; Coming spring 2010
Sony has joined Microsoft in launching its own motion-sensing controller at E3 - a wand-like device for PS3 which will hit stores in spring 2010.
And despite Jack Tretton's on-stage claim that the news hadn't been leaked, it had – by MCV, of course.
The prototype of the unnamed device was demo'd live on-stage by its creators. The stick-like pad - which has a 'magic ball' on the end that allows the PS Eye to triangulate its position - is held in the gamer's palm.
SCEA boss Jack Tretton called it: "Technology that's much closer to real life than anything you’ve ever seen."
Creators Dr Richard Marx and Dr Antony Mikhaeloff took to the stage to show the device off.

"This far suprasses anything you can get on the market now," said Marx. "We’ve been hard at work on this for a few years. It's a new set of experiences for PS3.
"Its most distinctinve feature is the glowing eye that the PS Eye can track. When you're playing RPG, for an example, you can choose fireball, and you throw to cast spell."
The pair also used the device on a drawing programme and said it could be used in genres such as FPS and sports.

Wii motion plus anyone?
How is this any different really to to the wii motion plus that maps 1:1? It's taken them some time to come out with a good copy in my eyes, sure it has the camera but project natal on the xbox is far more advanced than that.
Nice one Sony . . .
SCEA boss Jack Tretton called it: "Technology that's much closer to real life than anything you’ve ever seen."
1 day earlier Microsoft showed a motion sensing device that doesn't even require a controller. This is just a cheap rip-off of the wii remote, at least Microsoft have done something new and innovative.
Wow...So Microsofts Nata was new and innovative eh?
The original Eyetoy on the PS2...........You're an idiot John.
Errr... no...
The PS2 eyetoy didn't have facial recognition, voice recognition, or motion tracking built in. All it was was a very low resolution 2D camera with a terrible microphone.
The motion tracking it was capable of (via software) was very primitive compared to Natal - I should know, I wrote a motion tracking library for it and the hardware provided you with nothing.
Natal's technology is highly advanced and makes the PS3 glowing wand thing look a bit silly and rather clunky. The glowing ball can change color (which looks cool) to allow users to change it if their background wall is too similar in color, which would result in the camera not being able to track it. A rather inelegant solution compared to Natal, which is a proper 3D camera.
Microsoft win this round of new controllers...... You're an idiot Harry. ;-)
jealous
i own a ps3 and now i have to get a xbox 360 just because this motion sensing thing is way cooler than what sony and nintendo have
Bandwagons 'R us
It just seems like everyone is jumping on the interactivity bandwagon here. The Wii revolutionised gaming, it brought families together an made gaming a more communal experience. Great. Except my Wii is sat gathering dust until friends or family come over.
Interaction like this at any level is a nice gimmick, but has severe drawbacks. I don't always want to get out of my chair to play a game. If i want a steering wheel I won't pretend there's one there, I'll buy one with force feedback.
It all feels like too much of a gimmick to me. Regardless of the tech behind it, it is still a novelty with few applications in "hardcore" games. If Microsoft do put off the 720 claiming that Natal is the next gen, I believe they're putting all their eggs in one, flimsy, albeit cool, basket.
Be a bit more objective.
Let me ask you this...how would you do a FPS or swordfighting game on Natal? For the most versatile control schemes, a peripheral is needed to register what is in your hands. I do not have confidence that Natal will properly recognize your arms and hands during a flurry of motion like the PSEye will with Sony's motion system. I'll admit, if you want a kick-ass fighting game and possibly a racing game, you will want Natal, but for all else, Sony's motion sensing scheme will work best and be easiest to assimilate into a game. Granted, neither tech is likely in its final form (so stop complaining about Sony's "silly glowing wands") so either company could innovate further and do just about anything. Then we'll see who gets it adopted faster: will it be Sony with their superior first party devs or Microsoft, after they throw more money at 3rd party devs and see what sticks?
Fanboys...
...started already.
Vic20 had a motion-sensor controller too, Commodore just didn't throw enough marketing at it to stick, and I should know - I wrote a motion-tracking library for it...
LOL at Sony fanboys
Nintendo started this, and everyone kind of though its a gimmick, it wont take off. I was one of those people. We were all wrong.
Now Sony and MS are playing catch up. Sony's tech is an expansion of the Wii. and MS is something completely different. All these people saying that Sony had the eyetoy needs to grow up.
This is very different technology.
Plus, I should state that I designed a library for the Zilog Z80 processor, it could do everything Wii and Natal does, It was the size of texas, and one arm swipe took 5 days to process, but it was some unreal tech.
sorry couldnt resist lol.
Really Xbox fanbois!?
Come on now guys, really!? Take away the wand peripherals and the ps3 eye equals Natal. Eye of judgment anyone where it recognized your hand interacting with the card to make the monster attack. Microsoft isn't going to do anything with it just like the avatars. I could totally see Sony's tech being used for project offset. The 1st person rpg, perhaps even Oblivion.
Who is the original maker of motion detection?
Microsoft, they are the original makers way back in 1998! Wii came out in november 2006. Some people are not able to think outside the box and research something. They will repeat the FIRST criticism a person comes up with. And NEVER research the truth. So how are ignorant people acting like Nintendo made it? The first one was made in 1998 by microsoft for a PC game they made called microsoft flight simulator. The controller is called the 'side winder' I bought one I know. But here is your proof if you was not born yet.
Go to wikipedia and type in "microsoft sidewinder" Also guess where the first webcam motion detection device appeared? That's right on a pc using microsoft windows.
Don't say ?
So:
1 First motion controller was made by Microsoft.
2 First motion detecting webcam was by Microsoft.
No WONDER they are the ones to make a controller less
system!
just think
just think, holding 2 of those in each hand, presuming they both have an analog stick and trigger on each, in a FPS wielding dual uzis or whatever, stretching one arm around a corner in a gunfight, or riding in guns blazing, point precisely in any direction, accurately in real time, the possibilities are endless, imagine fight night, you could literally train for real boxing with these things, among other endless possibilities
Both have their strong points
I can't believe there's people out there saying natal kicked sony's motion sensing's ass. And I can't believe there's people downing Sony for cheating off the Wii. Who wouldn't? The host himself at sony (don't know the names) said in an interview "we don't care about being first. we care for being the best." Who care's if nintendo made it first? Or microsoft was the first to come up with the technology?
Now, both natal and sony's have their weak and strong points. I can tell natal is going to be fidgety and who knows how good the voice technology will be. I've never seen one to work well. However, I do give it to them for having the voice recognition in there, that's one point extra for natal over sony.
I can tell natal has more high end technology put behind it. I'm sure programming software to recognize a human body was no easy task. But sony kept it simple and came out ahead. For playing games sony will be 10 times better. There's much more flexibility for it. It actually knows exactly in a x,y,z axis where you are standing in a room. natal seemed to just scan the human outline and read it for motions. It'll be good for excercise games, but sony is much more precise. You can actually pick up an object in a 3d world! natal does not have the capability of tracking a tennis racket to your hands. not like the sony. millimeter precision! holy shit!
Power Glove anyone?
Ummmm the power glove predates the sidewinder. Though it was better used on the playground than with a game.
Am I the only one that is creeped out by something that can know what you are doing, know what you are saying, know how you are feeling, etc.? The old paranoid anarchist in me just sees something very 1984 coming from this tech many years down the road.
@ nndr
You can tell natal will be fidgety? You can tell it won't work properly cause voice recognition never does? Give me a break? 1. Have you used it? NO. 2. It's very early days yet you can somehow tell the future saying it won't work? You my friend are what people call a cynic. 3." It just scanned a human outline"? Are you that blind? Do you not research anything? Your so stubborn to even care no doubt. Get out of Sony's backside and wait until more info on both products are released before you spout such nonsense.
You create a post based on they both have strong points thenn state sony's motion controller it 10 times better. Grow up. Christ.
Wrap it up and give it to me to CHOOSE !
I was pretty impressed by MS's Natal demo, probably more because i didn't expect anything innovative from them, or perhaps, it's just that they presented it in such a compelling way...Natal is a rip off (and upgrade) of the eyetoy...have a look at the video of the eyetoy from years back...check some of the virtua figher eyetoy demo's on youtube...
What sony has come out and said, they have learnt that body motion tracking, voice recognition, etc means nothing if you don't have a tangible interface, they know! and I bet in 2 years, it's going ot be obvious that you need 5 buttons to indicate what action you are throwing out with your limbs...not everyone can do a roundhouse kick in tekken ...so press X for round house and then go for it ! a nd even with a shoddy attempt, it still works !
Sony dominated E3...natal will evetually be less of a fad than the wii..and sony will rise (as they are doing) by offering the best product to consumers! (Not even nintendo has done it, they just offered *something* so they could rake in the cash). They had nothing new on show at E3 other than plus and sequels...
I'll bite....
I usually resist calling out the fan boys on this site....but can not holdback this morning, not that it will change anything.....fanboys will exist forever....unless we ever do go to a one console future...anyways to quote Lemon:
"Sony dominated E3...natal will evetually be less of a fad than the wii..and sony will rise (as they are doing) by offering the best product to consumers! (Not even nintendo has done it, they just offered *something* so they could rake in the cash)."
At what point does Wii not become a fad anymore ? People were saying Wii was a fad 2 years ago, and yet it still continues to sell month after month....can we please stop calling the Wii a fad...love it or hate it, I think it's genius in expanding the market definitely deserves more credit than this.
As for motion control etc - too early too make any judgements I would say.....all look interesting but it is not motion control directly that makes the Wii so popular...it is the simplicity of a gaming experience it offers, and the others should not forget this. Any advanced motion control that requires more complex movements etc may run the risk of becoming a niche product. It is definitely an exciting time in gaming (although I have been saying this for the last 25+ years!), lets all just enjoy.
They do make you laugh...
"Sony dominated E3"
Hoorah to fanboys. :)
old and cynical
Well for what its worth, I was underwhelmed equally by all the third parties. Does this make me an anti-fanboy or just old and cynical?
re old and cynical
Supergrass - this is not an attack - but just a response to your question - I think you are possibly being old and cynical - part of me thinks we expect too much from these conferences etc - there are definitely some exciting games etc coming out in the future that I look forward to playing - the new tech etc for me is just a side show, and is also too early for a new console I think - for me it's all about the games, and whatever console you own, there is alot to look forward to.
unusual tact
No offence taken. Quite refreshing to see someone being tactful on here actually :O) To be fair I thought there were a few interesting things for me personally but nothing that was earth shattering.
Motion sensing tech is obviously the flavour of the moment and its interesting to see MS' and Sony's versions, but give me a gamepad anyday.
GT5?
all i want to know is when the fucking hell is GT5 finaly going to be out.
forza 3 is out in octouber so if GT5 is not out by then sonys lost.
its absolutly pathetic how long its taken them forza has basicly the same stuff as GT5 (from what they say) and it has a release date.
i thought sony would of learnt there lesson with home but it looks like they like to learn the hard way
well while we're at it
personally i don't have as much room as the family in the xbox ad.
i do agree that Natal is the better tech, cannot argue, but not for racing games. somebody mentioned force feed back and without it that, racing sims suck a bit. personally despise Mario Kart for a lack of accuracy, loved Forza2 and looking forward to GT5. and if you think my mum would let me wear a hole in the carpet by dragrgin my foot around like i'd stepped in poop, well, you're nutts!
that douche-bag said the controller was a barrier, absolute rubbish. it's thanks to the complexity and versitility of todays controllers that gaming is so lucrative, otherwise it would have been a fad and Mr Douche-Bag wouldn't be as fricken rich as he is now (smell those sour grapes). i agree there is room to improve tho. i'd rather see these kinds of things compliment conventional controller, like the VC in Endwar. ultimately a mediocre game, but if you could have used that sorta thing with R6-Vegas to sort your dudes out, then it would mean only one button for your canon fodder/operation human shield. same for motion control, used as a complimentary device is cool, some games do it already, unfortuantely, they use the sixaxis. weak.
One place where it would be good is in FPSs where you have to pick something up or do some sort of action that usually requires pressing the action button. other than that tho, i want full control to shoot people in the head.
i think Sony have pretty much done what they did with the Dual Shock analogue controller, ie ripped of Nintendo (the N64 pads had analogue sticks, but they sucked a bit) and the Dual Shock was an award winning design.
personally i think it's too soon for Natal although it is an amazing interface. i also bet it would be pricey. if Sony's fallices can bridge the gap between hardcore and casual, they'll nail it. if not, gutted.
Nintendo? ahh **** 'em. they're happy where they are and people are still spending.
personally, being as objective as i can be (which basically means i'm not being objectivce at all) i'm glad i traded in my Xbox for my PS3. however, it's had it's fair share of disappointments. i don't expect that to change too much.
project n
LOL man camera to play games? seriouslly a true "gamer" or should i say serious gamer plays for hours.... specually clans etc games like that if u use ur body for hours.......yeaah nah i dont see that happening camera going to be target to causal gamers... LOL i seriously see a fail eye toy sucked balls as if im gonna stand there and play for 3 hours
It's all old news.
I wrote script for the original motion tracker tech, 1000 years ago! I also invented computers and console games, I made every game you've ever seen or played, them destroyed them all. Everything your seeing done today, I did it first, and simply stating this here is 100% proof of this! So bugger off!
bsdasd
John's right..your an idiot. its the same bloody concept..except MS has advanced it..DERRR. Just because it has more functionality doesn't mean it ISN'T a rip off.
I don't know why MS even bother, the thing will fail or most likely NOT happen, its just some gimmick to get people distracted from thinking of the Wii.
Natal is so limited. anyways.
Wow there are some t**ts on here
I have worked in the industry for many years, and i'm still astonished by the 'my console's better than yours' crap that goes on. Sure we're all fans of a particular game or console, but belittling developers achievements just because of the machine you happen to have under your TV is just plain childish. Get a grip people.
Alex...
...Well said. But they probably won't take notice.
ps3 motion
wow another wii system only this one dosnt work and has a shiny ball on the top wooptydoo sony still sucks and besides the ps2 the cant make S**t they should just quit
Missing the point...
Whilst both solutions have their plusses and minuses, I can't help feeling that the point of both has been missed. Nobody at either company is suggesting that Natal or .. erm .. Glowy-Ball-Thing(tm) is set to replace standard controllers. They have been designed to open up what the console can do for the more casual audience. Non-gamers have a hard time getting to grips with the PS3 or 360 controllers, and the very simple Wii controls proved that they can be included, just by using a different control scheme that is less about using your thumbs.
The Wii also proved that using a pointer to aim at things on the screen is utterly crap, and that motion sensing is only good for certain things.
Are MS suggesting that Natal will be the new default controller for all games? No. It is there to allow for casual 'experiences' to be developed and to tap into a gigantic market that currently only the Wii is able to access. Bandwagon? Yup, absolutely. Good business sense? Yep. I'd do the same thing in their shoes (and anyone who says they wouldn't doesn't have the first idea about how businesses work or make money).
As far as I can tell, Sony aren't quite sure what their device is going to be used for, but I have no doubt that they aren't daft enough to think it will replace the good ol' joypad for hard core games.
(Oh, and for whoever said that the Sony thing was just a prototype and won't have the glowing ball on it for the final version - you're completely wrong. The glowing ball is how the PSEye tracks the motion. Without that it'll be no better than motion tracking on the Eyetoy. The glowing ball WILL be on the final product.)
PS3 Motion
I think(key word think) that the ps3's motion controller will be better because it offers more genres of play where natal offers off the top of my head racing and fighting which have their strong suits in fun but the ps3's will get FPS,RPG,Strategy(which natal might get),and more.
I think the natal despite MS's claims will be as twichy as can be (for this era) and the ps3's will most likely be twichy as well but less.
Natal looks for you body but like i stated above MS claims that it is hard to fool are probably stated to stop people from getting scared that it may not be good
Now i may be wrong so dont start cursing your pants off cuz you are a microsoft fanboy, but as you probably noticed im a sony fanboy and all of you that claim not to be a fanboy you are lying because you must play one system more than the others so you like it better so dont belittle others cuz you dont view yourselves fanboys
one more thing stop repeating the same stupid thing that sony ripped of nintendo cuz nintendo got the idea from somewhere before that and that idea came bfore that and so on and so forth plus every video game is copying movie cuz thats how it started like how movies started with pictures it an endless cycle and i assure you sony didn't start it.
@foxliqman
... Are you so narrowminded? Not because of your comments on motion, but you think if one person plays a console slightly more than another it makes them a fanboy of that console? Wow you just keep getting more and more pathetic. You know some people are fan of all consoles equally. GROW UP!
1
ok it is differant because you can move it up down left and right and if you aim it up and down left and right
Natal Vs Sony VS Nintendo
To be fair.....
Natal has opened alot of possabilities, i dont think you will be playing games on it like there are available today. I would think that some games will have a movement based interface option (C&C unit control with you hands!!!! Bad ass) but for the most it will be a different type of game. Spielberg isnt going to make some dry FPS...
Sony's attempt at motion control is going to be just like the Wii Motion Plus.... fun for a while then crap when you realise that there is only about 1 game that you own that works better with the motion control.
RES 4 Wii....
Mug
"I think(key word think) that the ps3's motion controller will be better because it offers more genres of play where natal offers off the top of my head racing and fighting "
Off the top of your head!!! :)
You mean you watched the Natal concept video from E3. Your a mug!
Project NATALvs. Incognito Subject Vs. Nintendo Remote
The PlayStation Eye can do EVERYTHING Project NATAL can do except for interacting with the console itself and the PlayStation 3 Motion Controllers are more efficient than the Wii's as it has a PlayStation Eye in the process which is although not necessarily required I think but EITHER WAY! Sony came 2nd in the E3 2009 and nothing can change that, plus Microsoft came 1st and Nintendo came last as they brought in NOOOO new hardware!!!
Nintendo Wii ain't High Def nor can you play complicated games on it, PS3 has the most complex and advanced tech till Microsoft's Project NATAL was announced : )
Is everyone here retarded? Natal is fake.
NO WORKING DEMO of Natal was available. The lucky people who were allowed to take a peak were told exactly want to say and do. It was pretty much just a magic show, and the participants even said that it was nothing like the video they showed. Geez, people will believe anything.
Eric
That, frankly, is absolutely ridiculous.

selus negotiations bound sailors fresh problem hodder
your all wrong about it
firstly where do people get off on thinking this is more primitive then the netal here is why;
1. there is no way to move on the netal
2.games were not designed for people to move around like a fag
3.there are many more ways this can be better for fps like for example ur not using thin air like a twat to shot and thats just one thing there are many more
4.its to early on for the natel to have the best of this tech it will e shit trust me there are many reosons why
5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th933AMxZM4
6.there is to many reosons why it isnt as gd so just stop hurting xbox rep by over hyping somet shit and playstation is fucking over the xbox lately so stop chatting shit trust me i know.
