Nintendo: We want to win over the Halo audience

Reggie Fils-Aime says his company is aiming for PS3 and Xbox 360 owners

After enjoying huge growth in the now blossoming casual market, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has said that PS3 and Xbox 360 owning core gamers are the company’s next target for market growth.

“We have near-term, mid-term and long-term opportunities – the near-term opportunity is the consumer who owns an PS3 or an Xbox 360 and has been bad-mouthing Wii to their friends,” Fils-Aime told Cnet.

“The mid-term opportunity is the more mainstream consumer who saw Wii at a friend's house but just needs a little extra incentive to get into our game. That's what Wii Motion Plus and Wii Fit Plus and new Super Mario Bros Wii will hopefully achieve.

“We think we win over the Halo audience with something like The Conduit, a multi-player, online, shooting experience, or Dead Space Extraction. And you know what? Once those people buy into Wii, they'll go buy Mario Kart or Wii Fit Plus.”

Any gamer who's enjoying (near)HD-resolution 30fps shooters will take one look at The Conduit and go straight back to KZ2, Halo 3, or - more likely - Call of Duty: MW2. Nintendo happily dropped the 'core' gamers in return for the WII Fit cash and now they want them back? No chance. The only way they'll do it is with new hardware and new IP. And it'd have to be bloody good.

Conversely, I can see this happening.

All of Nintendo's core gamer franchises (with the exception of Metroid) have sold higher on Wii than they did on GameCube, to the point where Brawl is the highest-selling Smash Bros game yet- I think there's a lot of core gamers that would buy Super Mario Galaxy if Wii didn't have this "only for casuals" stereotype.

Of course, it's all in the execution, and I doubt that The Conduit is The Answer.

I think its time nintendo woke up and smelt the coffee, there "next" target are the more hardcore gamer... welll they will be lucky. 25% of that market are xbox fanboys, the other 25% are playstation fanboys. and the other 50% well there the ones that only care that its in HD and the graphics look spectacular.

the same FPS games wont be good enough on the wii to win over the hardcore its just that simple. that and there focus on there controller. they have the classic controller that they could use to develop for more core gamers.. but they dont. and wont. it took ages for people to accept FPS without a keyboard and mouse. honestly nintendo good luck trying to convince people that a nun chuck and a wiimote are the way forward.
