Rockstar: Exclusivity does work

Boss Ben Feder speaks of his confidence in Sony and the support they will offer PS3 exclusive Agent

Take 2 Interactive and Rockstar president Ben Feder has been waxing lyrical about platform holder Sony in the wake of the news that upcoming title Agent will be a PS3 exclusive.

“The trade-offs a publisher will typically make is, if you're platform-agnostic, you get a larger installed base,” Feder told GameSpot. “You're platform exclusive when you get the right kind of support from first parties.

“At this phase in the cycle, when you're trying to launch a new franchise, exclusivity can really help you launch the franchise. It can give you the kind of platform that you need to start exclusive, start in the right kind of way with the right kind of partner. Exclusivity does work.

“I have a lot of confidence in Sony. I have a lot of confidence in their ability to lead the market, as they always have. Their console is a terrific platform to be developing for, and Agent is a great testament as to our belief in what that platform can do, and what they can do with us as part of a partnership.”

Agent is currently in development at Grand Theft Auto IV studio Rockstar North, and whilst little is known of the title as of yet, its pedigree alone already makes it a must-watch title.

“We think Agent has the potential to be yet another great Rockstar North franchise title,” Feder added.

“It's the Houser Brothers and Rockstar North. It's the A team working on a triple-A title. I think the subject matter, the characters, the story, the environment, the background – all the elements are there. It's such a rich environment to play in.”

Exclusivity does work. . .

Exclusivity does work, If the first party pays the development costs and the third party splits the profits.

This sounds like Sony have a similar deal to the one MS had for the GTA DLC.

Sony take the risk (pays for development) and RockStar get a cut of the profit.

This may well be the business model used for all third party exclusives in the future.

Oh, this is pure speculation on my part. RockStar maybe fronting all the dev costs themselves. I have no inside knowledge of this deal.

Still , it's nice to see Sony with the upper hand.

You know, this story reminds me of that Derek and Clive song... "here comes aaaa-nother one...".

I find it so amusing that the minute any studio turns platform exclusive, that platform is the best, that platform is great to develop on and it's a market leader.

Yeah, we get it, Sony paid you big bucks and now you have to suck up to make sure they see the required "gratitude". It was no doubt the same when Microsoft handed over the big bucks for the GTA exclusive DLC.

Some of these people would make great scuba divers, with the depths they go to... such integrity, you have to laugh.

@ LeeC
I agree with you to a certain extent their Lee. Of course there is always going to be a little sucking up going on when someone comes along and gives you a fat wad of sweaty money. However I think some of Ben Feder's apparent affection for Sony comes from the close relationship R* and Sony once shared... And indeed appear to still. A relationship that was forged no doubt right around the time GTAIII began selling by the boat load on Sonys then pride and joy, the Playstation2.

This game is going to be sweet.....

I think its going to make a big difference to the way people see Sony..... ;) Its going to be like Killzone 2 and LBP. Interesting for about 4 weeks then no ones going to care......

Problem is that 90% of PS3 owners are more concerned when Mamma Mia was coming out on Blu Ray rather than when there next big game is coming out.

The Truth - you talk nonsense. there's almost 2 million PS3's now in the UK and Mamma Mia has only sold 100k on Blu Ray, so PS3 owners don't own the machine primarily for Films.

Whilst PS3 makes up the majority of Blu Ray players at the moment the popularily of Films is still a lot smaller than Games, based on the volume of Ps3 games compared to Blu Ray films (and at a much higher price too)
