Sony says 360 and Wii owners will ‘upgrade’ to PS3

Sony says 360 and Wii owners will ‘upgrade’ to PS3

SCEE president suggests that advanced tech could see PS3 outlasting planned ten year cycle

Andrew House, the president of SCE Europe, has suggested that owners of current consoles such as Wii and Xbox 360 will ‘upgrade’ to a PS3 in an effort to keep track of the technology offered by Sony’s machine.

“If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64, we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the lifecycle when the price point was right for them,” House told OPM, according to Edge.

“I think we’re going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player as well and that there’s a greater wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will definitely be a factor in the marketplace.”

House went on to mirror the similar sentiments recently expressed by rivals by stating that his machine could be around for a lot longer than had forst been thought.

“There are a few things that drive this to a significantly longer than ten-year lifecycle for me,” he explained.

“One is the traditional market dynamic that as prices come down you build down and out through the pyramid to a new type of consumer, and the motion controller we showed – and gave a firm release date on – changes the experience and allows us to bring in a new audience.

“And then over that there’s the network offering and a different way – and PSPgo is another aspect of that – for consumers to consume content. All three of those give us a tremendously strong opportunity to really build that platform lifecycle up over the long term.”

With less features, and a worthless Blu-ray Drive, seems like a step backwards to me. Oh well I guess they have to keep releasing this drivel.

In other words, we're not going to make another Playstation until we make back the money lost after the financial disaster zone that is the PS3. Sony can't afford to gamble on a PS4, hence the 'lifecycle increase' of the current incarnation.

They can make it sound as exciting as they like but talk of 'upgrading' when the price is right is just rubbish. The people he is talking about simply don't think the PS3 is worth the money at the moment. Meanwhile Xbox 360 sells at £149 a piece.

Sholuld say when xbots get fed up of "replacing" the numourous 360's they might think about getting a reliable machine.

Oh as for the comments about taking a machine home and trying blu ray and it being awful ---- you can't have been using the correct setup maybe you should box your new TV and PS3 back up return them both...

thanks for you comment, but as i sell both for a living mate i think i know what i am doing so keep your comments to yourself, ps3 has it own problems !!, customers bring them in all the time with discs stuck in the drives and countless error codes, as for the rrod , i will agreed but i never said the 360 was better, i just said i am fed up with the buxxxhit that sony keep banging out about the ps3, if you are in the trade as i am with shops then you will know as well as i do that ps3 is lagging well behind with no sign of it getting better.

Desperate tactics from Sony here, there console is selling the least out of the 3 and there still trying (and failing) to find excuses for it.

They got raped by Microsoft & Nintendo at e3 & they still think they can make ridiculous comments like this. Iditos.

Why don't they focus on adding new feautres like the 360 & reducing the price rather than blabbing about this so called "10 year life span", which, incidently, is because Sony have no money left to develop a new console. (and don't say the PSPgo is a new console becasue it just isn't - don't get me started on that)

So when the PS3 is 11 years old and the next version of the Wii and 360 are out, do they really think people will be 'upgrading' to a PS3?

It's sad how long the lifecycle is for games consoles when you consider Nvidia used to release a new bit of tech every 6 months.

Reality Check

Sony are pointing out that N64 owners upgraded to a PS2 - which they did as one was a generation in front of the other. THe PS3 is in the same Gen as the Wii & 360 and will still feel 'old' to consumers who have newer things to buy.

While I feel that the 'next gen' 360 is the Natal Camera thing, and the next gen Wii is a long way off yet I can't see Sony having anything better than they have now.

I wanted a PS3 before launch and decided that would be my one console for the generation as it did everything. Now I have 360 and Wii and have no PS3, because it just didn't live up to the hype and nothing particularly well.

One suspects that PS3 owners with partners and kids are already upgrading to the Wii...

Upgrade Xbox 360 and Wii to PS3? Upgrade? Sony, noone who buys your PS3 is buying it for the Blueray (although they might as well due to the limited quality of the game collection)

I'm a self confessed Playstation fanboy, with a 360, PS2 gathering dust and no sign of a PS3 (until God of War 3 comes out that is) but even then with the rediculous price of it i'm not sure I would buy it. I'd rather get a new top end GFX card and crossfire than play all of 2 half decent games that your system holds over the Xbox.

Plastation Fanboy Sonyrant over. A first?

Sony targets the ignorant public again...

posted by LeeC Jun 09, 2009 at 6:50 pm

There are only 2 types of people who will buy into this... the ignorant public convinced that "expensive = better" and fanboys, who are convinced "the same = better".

Anyone with any kind of "gaming" savvy will spend more time laughing at Sony than believing them. Mainly because they probably already have both consoles (as they are not bound by ignorant fanboyism) and can tell the difference between "the same" and "better".

But let's be honest, one quick browse round the school kid sites, like IGN or Gametrailers, and there is enough ignorant public and fanboys to keep Sony in business for quite a while yet... so they're probably not worried.

Unfortunately, the Blu-Ray crowd are now opting for equivalent quality players for half the price of the PS3, so they're even losing that market too.

Personally, I can't wait to get my PS3 collection into double figures, I might not feel so bad at being a "launch day junkie" then. I certainly need something to show me that the PS3 really is worth £425, because I haven't seen it yet.

And I think that's what people forget... there are people like me who paid over £400 for this "trueHD, twin HDMI, 120fps, real next-gen" gaming machine" but keep getting "720p, single HDMI, 30fps, same gen as everyone else" gaming instead. And let's be honest, you don't have to spend £299 to get that do you?

Whilst I'm not disputing this is a little bit on cloud 9, some of your posts are just simply mis-informed, about as mis-informed as Sony.

The long life-cycle is in line with every other console on the market. In this economy, investing lots of money in a new platform would be stupid.

The guy who "sells this stuff" yet claims it looked rubbish... out of interest, do you ever use the damn stuff? Blu-ray movies look fantastic, there is no arguing that. Regardless of how biased you sound in your post, you have to concede that blu-ray is fantastic for movies.

Sonys major problem with the PS3 has been the lacklustre game line-up. Microsoft have been buying all the exclusives leaving sony in the dirt. The awkwardness to create a game for the PS3 has been a major Issue, but I'm sure there is much more power to be squeezed out of the machine.. much more.

Major problems come from 3rd party games companies. They're either creating for all the consoles or Microsoft pay them off for the exclusives. Why buy a Sony when you can get the games for the Xbox?!

E3 was certainly not a washout for Sony. yes the motion controller is a wiimote with a ball on the end. But as far as games go, they announced a fairly solid line-up with some new IP's pushing through. Microsoft stole the show with Natal, but at the end of the day, Natal is there to capture the casual market, I can't see hardcore genres using it well. Otherwise, microsoft had 2 Halo games... 2!!! FFS let the franchise die. It seems more and more like they are simply milking it for all it's worth. Unless there are some radical changes and more refinements it's going to feel more like an expansion than a stand-alone game.

The PSPGo, whilst not being new, is a positive for me. It improves on the poor design of the original and will hopefully be more comfortable to use. The PSP also has a wealth of new games coming out.

The console war has been won by the "fun" console, the Wii. Microsoft have second place, and sony dwindle behind. But as for Sony's profits. Check out the sales of the PSP.

You all need to check what your're typing at times, microsofts line-up wasn't that spectacular, a lot of sequels due, and not risking the New IPs. I like to see new stuff in the market, not the same stuff with a different story.

I'd like to think I'm unbiased, afterall, I game on a PC, I don't own any consoles. Sony. Bring on the PS3-Slim

This is a great post. You put all us console gamers straight with your 'knowledge' then tell us you don't game on a console yourself! You may be unbiased but you're also inexperienced and not a little naive.

The long life cycle is not the issue, it's the fact they are now planning to extend it which prompted my post. Their projected forecasts proved optimistic and they had to react to that, but they're announcing it like it's exciting and they planned it.

With regards Microsoft only having Natal and two Halo games at E3, did you miss Kojima-san's appearance? Check it out, he had some great news.

As for the 'console war' being won, how about there isn't a console war? They are three established consoles competing, but to 'win' suggests two losers, and I can't see anyone's ship sinking just yet. Why must everyone be looking out for the winner? Playstation MIGHT go under one day but that's just conjecture. As for now it's just healthy competition and good for all gamers.

Lastly, we all like to see new, original IPs but devs often cannot afford the risk. They are businesses after all and making great quality sequels virtually guarantees huge profits. I'm sure they have a lot of new ideas and would love to make an original game as much as you'd like to see one, but they can't/won't plough millions into uncharted territory. You can't blame MS for that.

Going from some of the comments here you could be forgiven for thinking that the PS3 being trounced, however according to VG Chartz in the time it took the Xbox 360 to sell around 19m units the PS3 has sold around 22.5m units. So it can't be all doom and gloom.

When the Xbox 360 was released, the Playstation brand was still very strong so maybe those 22m were holding out for it. Games like Gran Turismo 5 were being touted in 2006 and hat still hasn't got a release date. I think people are becoming disillusioned with it. I certainly am after a year of owning one.

It would be for the good of everyone (including Xbox 360 owners) if the PS3 does well and turns its poor attachment rate around.

Some of the comments on this page claim they're unbiased but yet they all seem to be coming from Xbox-Fanboys.

@ games direct:

When it comes to movie media the PS3 wins handsdown
I own PS3 and the HD DVD attacment for 360
The HD DVD looked exactly side a SD version of the movie, no noticable visual or audio differences.
On Blu Ray you can see the differences, I will admit certain movies you can't see much difference but as opposed to HD it was defo better.

@ farz:
Both consoles after problems, Xbox's more publicised than PS3.
Obviously Xbox has the RROD error as well as error 55(if I remember correctly)
Where as the PS3 has issues with HDMI.

I own 2 Xboxs and a PS3
My first Xbox was bought at release has been replaced twice (currently on my 3rd)
My 2nd Xbox (elite) was bought at release of Elite has been replaced once (currently on my 2nd) - All Xbox faults have been the dreaded RROD.
My PS3 (40GB) was bought at Xmas 07 and I'm currently on my 3rd - all 3 were the same issue with HDMI intermittantly dropping.
So in regards reliability they're both just as bad as each other.

@ some dickhead:

"Why don't they focus on adding new feautres like the 360 & reducing the price"

The PS3 has more features than 360, IE browser, Blu-Ray, Wireless out off the box, holds more controllers than Xbox 7 as opposed to 4, easy access to files on other computers. My laptop connects auto without any settings to be changed to stream media through my TV with my PS3 whereas Xbox I had to change almost every setting.

Clearly 360 has advantages as well, the achievments system is probably the best thing about 360.
If it came down to me buying a game on PS3 or xbox I would usually go for Xbox just for the achievments(everyone likes feeling like they're better than there friends)
I thought it was ridiculous that Xbox announced that you'll soon be able to view Facebook etc on your 360 at E3. This is something I've been able to soon since purchase with both PS3 and Wii.

Without a doubt the PS3 does need to lower the price, there's too much of a gap between the costs of PS3 and it's competitors, sooner Sony realise the sooner they can start making some money at least.

@ Gow:
Agreeing with to a certain degree. I can't really see many new consoles being released for a few years due to current economic difficulties. And also Sony games line up until this year has been somewhat uesless. MS definately has done great things to get some great exclusives from the 3rd party companies but look at the line up this year, as Gow says, 2 new Halo games, no thank you, stop milking the series, Alan Wake, this game better be one of the best games I've even played due to the long release cycle it's had. Besides that I can't think of any other exclusive games that are getting me excited.

Whereas Sony have GOW3, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo (next year I know but still), that's to name a few, PS3 line up certainly looks better than Xbox's though, and then you've got the PSP which consoles looks great, Motorstorm, MGS, Gran Turismo (with 800 cars), LBP, all the PS3 killer apps all being released on it, definatelly a bit better than DS's line up of me-too games. (Took my partner 20 mins to decide if she wanted to buy Pippa Funnell or Imagine Horse Riding on DS yesterday, both made by same company, publisher and both the exact same price(sh'es not a gamer))

@ MarketZero
Your major comment was about Kojima... a new MGS... that's also coming to PS3 and PC, good news for the Xbox fans but realistically just the same for PS3 and PC fans.

I personally don't think this console war will be won, both Xbox and PS3 has there advantages and disadvantages. Both have strong SW. But I think that it will be the SW that decides this battle as opposed to the HW.

I do think that Wii have it in the bag for overall console but that's just because of the casual market. As Cliffy B once stated the Wii is a virus, from all the people I know I can tell you that they rarely play there Wii, the true console war is purely between PS3 and 360. If PS3 lowers the price (which you know they will do come August/Sept in the run up to Xmas) they'lll capitilize. Xbox need to make sure they don't put all there eggs in one basket with Natal, if done correctly fine, but it if goes wrong we could see one of the most dramatic turn arounds in regards consoles.

Now I think I'll go play a bit of CoD5.

upgrading to ps3

Upgrading to ps3 is a good choice but with a steep price tag of around £300 I still dont think it will sell as more as xbox 360. However I think SONY will find it difficult to cut £300 as the console does recuire more money to make. With PS3 you will get more for your money, things such as vidzone (free), everything built in, blu ray, lots of exclusive games and more memory than any other console on the market ( if you buy a 160GB). I all so prefer the motion conroller idea better to project natal, I can imagine project natal to be very annoying when playing. If project natal does work properly I m affraid that ps3 will get destroyed by xbox 360. In my opinion ps3 need to compete more like they did with the ps2.

I pretty much agree with alot of what your saying, abut I can't help but think you have no right to call people fanboys when your creeping that way.

When you mention exclusives it seems even though you say "the lineup this year" you mention two out of three PS3 games which are not even out this year, i.e Heavy Rain which has been put back to Q1 2010, and GT5 which frustatingly still doesn't have a release date, although least we have a PSP version on the way. Good times.

So that leaves you with GOW3 which looks IMMENSE let me add, and I'm also suprised you don't mention Forza 3, if you love GT5 surely your a racing fan? Lost me there a little.

Just saying, seems you lost your way through your article and started pushing biast views.

Try not to let peoples opinions get to you, people sputing nonsense on the internet is a common thing you know. :-)
