Could Ghostbusters spark import rush?

PlayStation exclusivity raises concerns that gamers may import region-free US version for Xbox 360

Sony’s move to grab PS3 and PSP exclusivity for Atari’s upcoming Ghostbusters title is nothing new in itself – but the region-free nature of many modern games could lead to an indie and online import rush.

Destructoid has had word from the North American arm of Atari that the Xbox 360 version of Ghostbusters will not be region locked. This is not uncommon for Xbox 360 titles and varies on a publisher-by-publisher and title-by-title basis.

However, the import market has not thrived under these conditions as in the modern market there is rarely a gap of more than a few days between American and European releases. PS3, PSP and DS titles are routinely not region locked, though there are exceptions, most notably on PS3. Wii games are uniformly locked.

Though Xbox 360, Wii and DS versions of the game will be released in the UK eventually, Xbox 360’s core userbase is traditionally a devoted one and is more likely than others to seek games from sources other than the High Street.

With the game releasing on all formats in North America on June 16th (just ahead of the UK PS3 release on June 19th) the door may be open for indies and, in particular, online retailers to make some under-the-counter profit.

Haven't there been incidents whereas the customer imported a game and was then not allowed to use any additional content from their native country?

Could be wrong but I'm sure I've come accross this problem quite recently.

Gone are the days of the mad import rush along with crazy high prices! Computer EXchange especially benefited this back in the days of imports! I remember buying a US version of Resident Evil, Tekken from CEX for around £70! Gone are the days of imports!

good for them. i mean im a ps3 user. kinda prefer it and i was happy about the uk exclusivity of ghostbusters to the ps3.

but to be honest no one can complain because ps3 users have been importing timed exclusives (rockband 2) for years.

so im happy that the xbox us release is region free good on you guys.. go get your game. we should all be allowed every game.

well they were right independents are already selling ghostbusters on the xbox 360. well at least Grainger Games are. and if not to make it any more suspicious the receipt of our test purchase says "Hardware Rental" the game is the American version they have stuck a bbfc 15 sticker over the American rating and did not even inform us that it was an import. they are selling it at £40 and considering they are printing on there receipt "hardware rental" i assume they know what they are doing is not all above board.
