Question marks remain over time delays between retail and digital release
Microsoft insists that its new Xbox 360 Games on Demand service won’t dampen retail sales.
But at E3, where the new service was unveiled, the firm admitted it hadn’t yet decided how long – if at all – a wait there will be between a digital release and its boxed brethren.
Last week the format-holder unveiled the service, which offers an array of back catalogue games for the 360 from EA, 2K and other publishers for download.
These titles, previously disc-only products, will replace the Originals service which made old Xbox titles available for download.
New Games on Demand titles will be added to the service, available in Xbox Live territories around the world including the UK, on a weekly basis. Customers can pay for the titles with a credit card or Microsoft Points.

“It’s all about more choice to consumers,” said Xbox Live rep Scott Austin. The service offers users the chance to provide score-based reviews and access to add-on content for each game.
But as for whether games will still be allowed to ‘premiere’ at retail, he admitted: “We’re not sure how that’s going to work – we’ve got new technology and we’re going to see how it works.
“Ultimately it just gives convenience and easy access to loads of the great content available for 360 - people can buy games, and get the great retail experience from their consoles in the comfort of their own homes.”
He added that publishers were briefed on the service prior to E3, and most of them are ready for the August launch of Games on Demand.
“Xbox has always been the leader in digital distribution and this is just the next step in that.”

Sooner the better
Concentrate on what the users want, not the retailers.
What I want is reasonably priced games (with packaging, distribution and retail costs removed from the process, it'd be cheeky to ask for full RRP, and, quite frankly, I won't pay it) available to download on day of release, please. Simple.
Sooner the better?
@1 Umm...ok so your more worried about yourself than putting thousands of people out of business? Simple.
evolution
I'd just care about getting the games cheaper and easier. The benifit will be that developers will get more profits rather then losing them to preowned sales. I'd rather my support went to the creative side of the industry.
Not gonna happen
Sorry, not going to happen, if Microsoft are really trying to appeal to the casual audience (Natal) then they need to ensure there relationship with retailers remains stable as the majority of this audience will not want/be able to download there software digitally . A move like this has the potential to destabilise this relationship and therefore put the distribution of xbox products at risk.
Personally im sticking to manual retail even if I have to pay more, im one of those people who must have a hard copy!
@1
So you want you games cheaper? Then trade all of your old ones you don't want!
Trade and Save is the message from Gamestation
Won't be beaten, take advantage of this because you won't be able to if it's all digital.
@3
ok fair enough you want them cheaper...everyone does but pre-owned actually can benefit publishers because people trade in old games to buy new ones...if they couldn't do you think people could afford to buy new games all the time?
downloading games
no one has a large enough download limit to download all the games they want.
out of the 50 kids in my tafe course i have the 3rd largest download limit.
ive got 15 one has 25 and one lucky ... has 50 GB.
360 games are what 4GB? each if i download 3 games thats 12GB gone in one day and for the rest of the month i cant download anything or im going to go over my limit.
that and download speeds are to slow im not going to sit infront of my tv wating for 2 hours for a game to download when i can take a 5 minute drive down to my local game store.
if they were to do what there doing with movies instant play no waiting no downloading than that would be interesting and worth while untill then im sticking to game shops even though there a complete rip off.
Games aren't cheaper just because they're digital
"with packaging, distribution and retail costs removed"
Unfortunately, just because it doesn't come in a box doesn't mean it will be significantly cheaper - after all, in place of the physical product you have additional costs such as badwidth use and billing costs, both of which are irrelevant at pont of sale for Microsoft.
Check current digital distributors like Direct2Drive and GamesPlanet. The games aren't much cheaper (if at all) than retail, but there are very good reasons for that.
not a bad thing but...
it's not a bad idea but it won't replace retail. i bought Mirror's Edge on release day thinking it was gonna be great. personally i thought it sucked and traded it in the next day (after completing it so i did give it a fair go) and got about 60% of the initial cost back. had it been digital then i'd have been screwed for £40. in light of this i'm not going to buy a full priced download. also bare in mind that if your HDD takes a turn for the worst, all your software is f***ed too (although i know some places let you DL stuff a number of times or something, still not as good as having the disc). great for cheap little games and DLC etc, but not for full titles. also i can swap discs with friends, if they're collectors eds (and good friends) you know it's safe (or insured by way of a mutual agreement).
i'm not saying people shouldn't do it, feel free by all means, just not for me. ta.
Digital download is not a wise move
Being a high street indie store that mainly sells DVDs, Blu-ray and preowned games this is a dodgy move. We have to remember that many gamers (most in their teens) dont have a credit card and if digitally downloaded they wont be able to trade...simple!!!
Why the hell would people want to download rather than buy the game from a games shop! It'll be the indie stores that suffer and I feel this is disgusting, I already get local people coming into our shop having conversations (in ear shot) and pointing out what they have downloaded already in our new release DVD section! Or worse, telling each other that they have already bought it for 2 or 3 quid cheaper from their local supermarket!
Its very wrong and will put a hell of a lot of local business's out of business! SIMPLE! nuff said!
ita all about choice......
There are a lot of reasons people have to like the digital way of things, and there are people who like it oldschool. Personally i can see both sides of this argument, but im sticking with the oldschool people. What would happen, if say , the system (microsofts xbox live) were to crash or something? then how the hell would people be able to do anything then? my choice is simple: retail. Even though it may be more expensive, at least I have a solid copy of the games I want to play and i dont have to worry so much about storage space on my HD. Plus, i actually like going to gamestop and physically looking at what im going to buy. A lot of times on xbox live most of these new dvd's or games dont have any real pictures or information about it or the information is hyped up so you think you are buying something good, but it turns out to be you got screwed. Id rather not risk putting myself and my system on something that isnt %500 sureproof.
