D3P team claim GamesFives victory

Publisher’s Real So So Bad defeat developer Rocksteady on penalties to ensure top prize

D3P’s Real So So Bad took the top prize home at the MCV and Xbox 360 GamesFives home on Friday, winning an Xbox 360 for each member of the team.

The side, which included PlayV’s Luiz Ferrera in goal, also picked up a £1,500 donation to a charity of their choice. They picked The Meningitis Trust and Field of Dreams.

Real So So Bad defeated a team from Batman: Arkham Asylum developer Rocksteady in a nail-biting final, which saw the lads from D3p win out 5-4 on penalties.

Gem’s St George’s Gems team ended up Plate Champions, defeating Imagine Publishing 2 – 1 in the final.

The player of the tournament was never in doubt – it went to Rocksteady’s Glen Garner, who also finished up with the Golden Boot award, after scoring 47 goals.

Almost 60 teams from the likes of Sega, PlayStation, Xbox, THQ, Konami, Activision, Atari, GAME and Gamestation fought it out in sun-drenched conditions over the course of the day.

Well another year passes in the mcv and i again notice the competition is not just open to the industry but obviously nationwide, i heard many stories on friday claiming players have been drafted in by certain companies (D3P - about 4 players) (Rocksteady Glenn Garner) to name just a few.....

A great day and really well organised as per usual.

Only downside was the amont of Ringers playing, despite strict rules about playing no ringers !!

This takes away the point of the tournament being an industry tournament !!!! More has to be done to prevent this happening time and time again...

In fact, I think it is a bit off that you have a few teams who don't take the competition seriously and decide to field illegitimate players instead of actual industry employees. The day was fantastic and the majority of players had fun and a bit of a kick around. However, I feel that D3P and Rocksteady should be banned from ever taking part in any industry events again for not taking part in the spirit of the competition. In fact, I would be willing to setup a petition to get them banned.

Oh yeah, my nose got burnt real nice... And I'm still slightly suffering from soar muscles due to a lack of warm-up and warm-down... Still, great day - we sucked, but it's all about the banter and the beer right?

I think next year that all players entering should have to prove that they work for the company i.e. produce their contract with business stationery and cast Iron written and signed confirmation from their MD that they work for the company they say they do that way it will only be industry people taking part in an industry tournament. Or everyone has to provide a passport photo verified by their boss on the back. I mean someone scoring 47 goals that is just plain ridiculous

This event gets better and better each year and at the same time harder and harder.

A big thanks to MCV, Xbox and Top Corner for putting on another fantastic event.

We were really pleased to win the Tournament and to take home an Xbox elite was the icing on the cake!

I'm not surprised you were happy to win the event. It must have been hard though to find enough ringers to beat a team from Hendon Town FC. Good to see you entered into the spirit of things. Who are you going to get next year? Ronaldo? Kaka?

As much as the day was enjoyable and I thank MS and MCV greatly for it, next year proof of employment must be asked. It's sad that it has come to this and trust is not enough, but drafting in pro's to a friendly industry tournement is low, very low. Especially when each man walked away with a console each.

Glen Garner is semi-pro footballer, but that does not mean he cannot work!!!! He's not a pro, he's a semi-pro, a player who trains twice a week and plays on a Saturday (for tuppence).

I actually agree that a pay slip or some sort of proof of ID should be taken. But, I know from someone at Rocksteady that Glen does work there.

Well... they would say that.

I for one will definitely be playing their new Batman game to an end. Wonder if Glen Garner's anem will appear in the credits...? maybe he did the mo-cap for that scene where Batman takes down a bunch of semi-pro footballers.

Real So So Bad

I didn't really want to get into a debate about ringers as I certainly don't need to justify myself or the team to people who post anonymous comments.

However, it's unfair to make unsubstantiated comments without the facts.

The Real So So Bad team is made up of employees who work for smaller companies in the games industry as not every company has loads of employee's to choose from.

The Real So So Bad team is made up with people from Play V, D3P and A4T amongst others. In the past we have also had people from other publishers / distributors.

So in real terms we are guilty of picking the best players from a group of smaller companies, which by the way was cleared with the organisers.

I have no problem with providing evidence that people work for who they say they work for.

I can't talk about other teams because I don't know but I think it's unfortunate that most of the comments are about ringers etc rather than praising what was an excellent event.

Ruud, they are not snide comments. I am speaking the truth. Microsoft and MCV held a fantastic day and I think it is something that the whole industry has appreciated. I think we all need days like that in our industry and everyone seemed to get along extremely well. It's unfortunate that it was tarnished by a few teams who didn't enter into the spirit of the competition and took it too far.

Thanks to Msoft/MCV/Top Corner, we had a really good day out, got absolutely thrashed a few games but still came out smiling.

Part of the reason for getting thrashed (apart from just being rubbish, which we were!) was that we actually went to so much effort to avoid mercing in players from outside the company that we played with no subs! Real shame on the ringers, we won't be quite so naive next year!

I realise that - quite rightly - many people are annoyed by the ringers and about the teams not operating in the spirit the tourney was intended...

But rather than all stooping to their level, we should hold firm, and shame them by our own dedication to the beautiful game - and to what was so close to a truly beautiful event.

It's not naive to be honourable.

Jacob, you speak some tripe. We are all allowed to express our opinions in this free society and if people feel agrieved then they have the right to express their feelings towards these unruly teams that field ringers in their squads.

You must have missed the numerous comments on what a great day it was and how well organised it was. I too expressed my gratitude to Microsoft, MCV and Top Corner for an excellent and well organised industry tournament. Note the use of "industry" in that sentence. Unfortunately a few teams must have forgotten that it was an "industry" event.

James,

You've missed my point entirely - I am just saying that next year, instead of us all following the poor example set by some teams this year, we should stick to our guns, and honour and play in the correct spirit.

I am just worried, after having a great day this year, that next year's tourneywill be tainted if every team starts fielding ringers.

I thinkyou and I are on the same side here James...

I agree. The tournament has now passed and we can't change the result. What we can do is work towards ensuring it is an industry tournament for Industry people. Strict guidelines, proper checks etc

With regards to eligibility as long as you do work in the industry up to the time of the tournament and can provide cast iron proof then you should be allowed to play. Some companies may not have enough players to be able to field a team so if it means banding together with one or 2 companies in the industry then that shouldn't be a problem.

It should be a fun day played in good spirit where everyone feels they have a good chance of doing well. I don't want to harp on about who ha ringers and who didn't but we have a year till the next tournament so the work should start now in ensuring that next years really is an industry only event.
