DIGITAL BRITAIN: Broadband tax on the way

Fixed landline owners to pay £6 per year to fund national superfast broadband rollout

All people who have a copper telephone landline will soon see an additional 50p added to their monthly bills following the government’s announcement of a £6 per year charge that will fund Britain’s future superfast broadband network.

Parliament has stated that its intention is for every UK household to have access to internet at a speed of at least 2MB by 2012.

Most of the cash will go towards improving the currently poor access seen in many rural locations. It is estimated that around 11 per cent of UK homes currently lag behind the target speed.

In total between £150m and £175m will be raised by the ‘tax’.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has justified the added expense by claiming that access to the internet is now as important as a working electricity or gas supply as Britain fights not to be left behind the likes of Japan and Korea – countries where internet connection speeds are typically up to ten times faster than in the UK.

This is great news. 50p a month? As long as I know it's ALL going towards faster speeds you can take £1 a month. I've been all over the globe and it's true, the UK's broadband is woeful. It's time we took a step forward, next stop 2TB Sky box's...

I think the Government have dropped the ball considerably here. Great, everyone should get a minimum of 2mb. That's fine but considering there's hardly anyone in the UK who even gets 2mb, especially when companies claim to give 4mb or 8mb they have a tough challenge. It would have been better to regulate the way broadband providers offer claims of "up to" speeds and making sure that provisions can't slip more than 2mb below the advertised speed.

And what about in 3 years time when it will be complete? 2mb is going to be nothing if we're expecting to be able to download entire movies and games the way the industry is going. And what if games are larger than they are now? I take this to be an incredibly negative and almost pointless step by the government.

STOP FIDDLING WITH 2MB AND GO UK FIBRE OPTIC!

Brilliant!
Lets all save up for the next few years and spend it all on out dated technology. What a great idea.

BT ring me every 3 months to get me to resign to their 8meg broadband. When they check I run at half a meg. I dont exaclty live in a rural area. Things like BT vision dont work on that speed as the exchanges are either too far away or overloaded.

A proper network for broadband is needed for it to benifit anyone.

As an engineer for a national telco/broadband provider, I'm here to tell you that ISP's aren't that focused on increasing speeds. Our company gave out some stats that show something like 2% of their customers were gamers, so increasing speeds for games isn't a top priority for them. And for movies and other media, they don't even include in their stats, they really are convinced people mainly use the internet for email or message boards. I don't think they see the big picture and therefore will continue to lag behind the times, long after it's too late.

So I got to pay £6 a year on the crappy wires I've got now?

Sorry Labour, You're morons, at least use that money to rip out the copper wiring and install fibre optic, then we'll be interested.

You've lost my vote now.

I started in the telco industry about three decades ago. We worked out then that we could have ripped out all the copper and replaced with fibre down to the phones. The entire installation could have been funded with the scrap value of the copper.
How things change: laser diodes were a grand each, now pennies. Price of Copper has rocketed - China bought a mountain in South America, and is reducing it to a hole in the ground, just to get the copper. But the only way we can do this is slap on another tax? Duhhh?

Oh and Virgin tell me I'm getting 10MB, I've been arguing the toss for months, last week they sent me the root username and password for the cable modem, and it is indeed pegged at 2MB, but they still wont have it...

I would love to even get 1Mg, why should I pay another £6 per year when BT has already announced that my exchange will be upgraded in wait for it ...2011. And that because of my distance away from teh exchange I may be able to increase my broadband to 1 whole Mg. I agree with Brian lets use the money to scrap the copper and give the whole UK Fibre.
