Millions rush to download software update, forcing ISPs and O2 to breaking point

Short of temporarily buying up all of the world’s net servers, Apple could never completely guarantee a smooth global rollout of the new iPhone 3.0 OS, but all things considered last night’s 6pm release went remarkably smoothly.

The only major hitch in the process came courtesy of mobile operator O2 which failed to keep its systems up to speed, preventing iTunes from automatically authorizing MMS capabilities on a user’s O2 account. Activations continued throughout the night with many users receiving a notification message from O2 this morning.
