Jack White and Jimmy Page “depressed” that children experience music through games
White Stripes’ Jack White has declared it “depressing” and “sad” that music games such as Guitar Hero are so influential in the way children discover music.
Led Zeppelin's songwriter and guitarist Jimmy Page also spoke out on the matter, questioning the relevance of plastic drums to kids wishing to learn about music.
Speaking at an NME press conference, White said: “It’s depressing to have a label come and tell you that [Guitar Hero] is how kids are learning about music and experiencing music.”
He went on to explain that he does not care “which format people should get their music in” but if it has be through video games, “that’s a little sad”.
Page added that he didn't believe people were able to learn anything significant about playing instruments through games. He pointed to his band's own drummer as an example of how games cannot recreate the experience.

"You think of the drum part that John Bonham did on Led Zeppelin's first track on the first album, Good Times Bad Times," he said. "How many drummers in the world can play that part, let alone on Christmas morning?"
Music from White Stripes is already playable in the Guitar Hero series. Led Zeppelin has yet to appear in a rhythm action title.
Comments
Twat.
I love how patronising he says it. Now that's sad.
Oh dear
I am surprised he was able to make those comments as he cried into his royalty cheque
I Agree
I've got to say I agree with them both.
I saw kids nailing guitar hero at E3. Fingers like lightning over the coloured buttons. If they'd have spent half the time they've played the game learning a real instrument they'd be almost a vertuoso.
Music is really a social thing, discovering bands, going to gigs, feeling the passion, etc. Not sat in a darkened room staring at a TV. Rather soulless in comparison.
Still, I'm happy to take the sales. Yes, I'm a hypocrit aswell.
Ignorance is no excuse
One thing does not preclude the other. In fact music games have demonstrably increased the uptake of learning real musical instruments amongst kids. And not just kids. My girlfriend plays these games, and she's in her thirties. Guess what she wanted for her last birthday? An electric guitar, which she's been learning since. It is a bullshit premise that music games are somehow killing off "real" music. If anything, they've made it more accessible and appealing to people that would otherwise never have bothered.
Dangerously Out Of Touch....
Jack White: "Where am I ??? What is this inter-ma-highway thing??? ....Wait people don't buy vinyl any more....that is sad" *goes back to sleep on royalty cheques*
I do not understand what is sad about it
I do not understand why it is sad and depressing that kids are learning about music in this manner. If a young child hears a song on guitar hero etc then decides to buy an album featuring that song what is wrong with that, isn't that how the majority of people go about buying an album, they unintentionally hear a song somewhere and decide to buy the single or album? Suerly no matter what the channel that person is still experiencing the artist's work.
If anything being able to play a game that mimics playing a guitar (as close as it can mimic) then surely that would introduce a child to musical instruments.
And @3 Although I agree that music is great as a social experience that is not the sole purpose of music. Also the fact that everytime I have personally played guitar hero it has been with a group of friends not on my own in a dark room!
The Zepp!
It's no surprise that Led Zeppelin don't want to get involved in a rhythm action title. They are notoriously precious over there music - which is their choice. I heard a story that Jack Black literally had to beg to have The Immigrant song feature in the movie School of Rock.
As for Jack White - Is he for real? I can't see there being a White Stripes edition, unless consumers would see value in one song!!
What we need is a Guns & Roses Edition!
WHITE STRIPES
white stripes ........... who ????? or should i say who cares
White Stripes
I've bought more than my fair share of WS albums. They've done some amazing tracks, they've also churned their share of awful album tracks that sound something like a amp and drumkit being thrown down the stairs in the name of being 'experimental'.
I can already imagine the 'missed note sound' in GH being perfect for those. Maybe we should have a GH: White Stripes after all
Makes Me Laugh
The games industry always gets a little over defensive when anyone suggests anything other than 'games rule'.
As a music lover Mr White was basically commenting on how he thinks its a little sad that verkids discover music via games. As I said I kind of agree with him. I remember first hearing the Velvets, Stooges, Sonic Youth et al and having my tiny mind blown. I can't see that same buzz coming from a game but I also see how kids can get into music via the media of games. No bad thing I don't suppose.
But it is just his opinion. Let it go. You'd think he'd threatened to kill your granny!
Fools
For a start, it's not only kids that play games. Why aren't they worried that adults only hear songs through games? And surely any exposure to their music is good? People who have never heard their music may now buy an album from hearing it in a game.
This is a different issue to learning an instrument. I'd prefer to see people learn a real instrument than play Guitar Hero, but if they're playing games, why not expose them to new music? I bought my first Feeder album because of some songs in GT2. And Offspring due to Crazy Taxi!
Crazy Taxi
Good old Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast "Caraaaaazy Taxi!".
Sorry that is completely off subject I know!
