US: Sony's PS3 titles struggle to hit 1m

Resistance: Fall of Man is the only Sony published game to pass the 1m sales mark in North America

A new report from GameSetWatch shows that to date only one Sony published PS3 exclusive title, Insomniac’s Resistance: Fall of Man, has sold over 1m units in North America in the two and a half years that PS3 has been on the market.

The only other title to even near the seven figure sales mark is Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet, whose US unit sales sit between 750k-1m.

A number of titles have sold 500k-750k units – Insomniac’s Resistance 2, Guerrilla Games’ Killzone 2, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted and Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.

Those yet to reach the half a million mark include Evolution;s MotorStorm, Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank and Ninja Theory’s Heavenly Sword. Both MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and Hot Shot Golf are yet to sell 250k units.

Note these sales numbers, which are based on NPD stats, do not include games sold as part of hardware bundles.

The numbers appear all the more noteworthy when compared with big first party titles on other systems. Microsoft’s Gears of War, for instance, hit the 1m sales mark after just a month on the market and had reached nearly 2m unit sales by the end of its second month. And that was at a time when the Xbox 360 user base stood at less than 3m – the PS3’s US install base is currently around the 7m mark.

As GameSetWatch notes, whilst Sony launched the PS2 with just one self-published title – the still under-rated FantaVision – PS3 was launched with the might of several first party games under its belt.

However, rather than relying on established IP Sony was keen for studios to bring fresh franchises to the table.

We’re still waiting for the PS3’s God of War (PS2 title God of War II actually hit the market after the arrival of is successor) the likes of Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Evolution were encouraged to put established brands such as Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and World Rally Championship on the backburner in favour of new titles such as Resistance, Uncharted and MotorStorm.

Very Surprising

you should have never put this up, the fanboys are going to go crazy at this. It just shows the effect you have on a game when you bundle it with the console. The figures are appalling from an attach ratio point of view if the installed base is 7 million

its called marketing or lack of it, watch micosoft roll out the hype machine when they have a 1st party game out, they simply over market it but when they can get a console RTS to sell like halo wars did, its clearly works

Marketing & Sequels

I love my PS3 & wouldn't swap it for any other console, but Sony really need to pull their finger out when it comes to marketing - I've seen almost none in the UK.

Also, sequels sell well, & Sony seem to have concentrated on new IP's (Killzone 2 doesn't count as nobody had head of KZ1 anyway) like Uncharted, Infamous, Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet etc, all good games but with no marketing, & no association with anything people are familiar with it's no wonder they aren't selling.

Wait until GT5 & God of War III turn up, & the Last Guardian to some degree, these will sell, the 1st two will probably sell like crazy.

Quoting only US figures is also a bit unfair as the PS3 is doing better in the rest of the world & America isn't the centre of the known universe - no really!

it's something i find myself wondering about: i read loads about sales in Japan but never EU/NA.

that's a shockingly low level of sales, but i think the 360 is more suited to NA than the PS3, particularly as they both stand now.

i've heard a fair bit about a huge marketing push from Sony this year, still yet to see it. i see Xbox ads on TV all the time. i can only assume it's the same in the states.

i do have to point out that most launch titles for the PS3 weren't that great however. IMO Motor Storm isn't a scratch on GT, Forza or Colin McRae, Resistance aint no Gears (wasn't that keen on Gears anyway) can't remember any other launch titles, they were THAT good.

Maybe Xbox owns NA and that's the end of it. Sony has J and EU. that doesn't really need to change does it? perhaps both consoles can co-exist. however if Sony wish to keep the EU sweet, they should lower the price and/or improve the serivices or at least just bring us in line with the rest of the world.

i still say Sony FTW!!!

Need more marketing

Sony's marketing has been atrocious for the PS3 games, the LBP ad was particularly rubbish.

They certainly won't be catching up with the 360 anytime soon at this rate. The last I read was that the 360 was about 1m sales ahead in Europe, 2m behind in Japan and about 8m ahead in the US so it's definitely going to be an uphill struggle at the current pricepoint.

New IP

Why is it excuses are made because Sony released new IP's, yet no one seems to remember that Gears of War was also a new IP for the 360. However, the new Ratchet was from an existing franchise and it didn't sell as well as I thought it would. However, most of the people I know with a PS3 bought it for movies...

I'm shocked.

I can't believe Hot Shots Gold only sold that many. I even bought 2 copies, the Jap one (the superior version) and the UK one, which is pants in comparison. (appropriate pun intended, you'll have to play the game to understand)

I am actually shocked at all those sales figures, they're incredibly low, but hardly surprising given that a lot of the PS3 buyers bought it for Blu-Ray, not games.

I guess that's what you get for cross marketing a product. You get higher overall figures, but the usage is split in two, meaning potential sales don't reflect the implied use. Sony keep telling the gamers, X million people have bought the PS3, except X million gamers "haven't" bought the PS3, Y million gamers and Z million movie watchers have... it makes a difference.

What about sales of MGS4? InFamous? Killzone 2?
All lower than Resistance? Americans sure have weird taste, LOL

That may be so but to be honest MGS4 as adored as it is by it's fans, is a bit of a cult classic, not everybodies cup of tea.

InFamous in my opinion was a bit of a letdown in the gameplay department, it just seemed a bit dull and generic and Killzone 2 looked great but had no story and repetative enemies.

Having said that i still would have expected slightly better sales, Uncharted was a very good game but unfortunately it pretty much did what it's name said.
