PS3 Slim already in production?

Fresh rumour and speculation claims that second version of PS3 has been signed off

It was the big pre-E3 rumour that never happened, but talk has once again emerged of a slimmed down re-imagining of Sony’s PS3 console, with claims that contracts with manufacturers have now been finalised.

Joystiq reports that two Taiwanese manufacturing companies, Foxconn and Pegatron, who already enjoy contracts to make the current PS3 have signed off deals to begin producing the new version.

Furthermore, the site claims that the process is well underway with the first shipments leaving the warehouse later this month in preparation for a ‘summer’ rollout. Sources have previously pointed to an August or September release.

All of this remains nothing more than speculation at this point. Whilst Sony has a history of altering its console designs as life cycles progress, to do so now before the generation one machine has seen any sort of discount would certainly be a surprise.

Why does it need to be slimmer?

my consoles sit under my TV quite happily and there is lots of space for all of them and a Sky box. My house isn't massive nor is my TV or TV stand. I don't plan on moving the consoles any time or making them portable so why do they need to be slimmer? SONY needs to knock at least £100 off the price rather than doing an unneeded redesign.

More £££s

Sony never cease to amaze me. The whole world and his dog are calling out for a price cut on a standard PS3 and here they are spending what must be millions on a redesigned unit. They simply do not listen to what people want.

Like the PSPgo, this is millions more £££s being spent on something that nobody's really asked for. The worst kind of mistake you can make is the repeated mistake and this looks just like one.

I think the PS3 slim will be good for the industry. There are people that are limited on space and some people just don't want a big ugly black box sat under their TV, Sky HD is bad enough.

If it's small enough like the PS2 it should fit in a car. You'd need to be pretty serious about gaming to stuff the current PS3 or an 360 in the boot of your car. The PS2 slim is still the most installed console in cars.

I can see the point of this, less parts, cheaper shipping, cheaper to build, cheaper to sell or puts the hardware into profit.

Manufacturers make a console cheaper through build and shipping efficiencies, while component prices come down through scale and age, component consolidation is the key.

Surprised they haven't more aggressively pursued this already.

@5: Gaming veteran? At 12, you have to be kidding?!?

To be a gaming veteran, you would have to be at least 35, seeing as gaming started over 30 years ago. If you are over 35 and still talk like a 12 year old, then mummy really needs to take the internet away.

And if you're not IP banned from this site after that comment, then there is something seriously wrong, with both you and this site's moderation.

Industry website?

It never ceases to amaze me, after being a viewer of this industry website for a year and a half, why non-industry types (I wouldn't even mind If I wasn't allowed to post, seeing as I'm not a strictly "in the industry") are allowed to post their fanboy drivel.

As to the subject in hand, please Sony let this be true. Im a 360 owner, but dont have any loyalty to what pieces of plastic and silicone are plugged into my telly. I really hope Sony get the slim out for xmas, get the rumoured firmware uprade for PS2 compatibility and even if they dropped it by £50 it would help. The upcoming exclusisves this year should finally see the PS3 push forward and give the 360 some much needed competition. Im not rubbing it in, I just cant help but feel a bit angry for all the PS3 early adopters, they really were bought in by a load of under-delivered promises. Props to Sony for finally getting their finger out.

If this is true, no guesses what I will be treating myself to for xmas ;-)

Completely irrelevant, and people are right to pour scorn on your childish comments.

Did make me laugh though. A lot.
