Platform holder was simply waiting for digital market to mature, says head of product planning
Sony had planned to release a 'network centric' model of the PSP ever since the beginning, according to an interview on website GameBusiness.jp.
In an interview with the head of SCE's product planning division, Naoya Matsui, it has been revealed that the company was simply waiting for the digital pipeline to reach a mature-enough state to sustain such a device.

Yea right...
Do they honestly expect anyone to believe that?
Yet again Sony refused to think outside the box and released hardware that failed to innovate and just burned user goodwill, just like with the walkman.
And so history repeats itself. Now that they have a working business model to copy from Apple, they declare it part of their big plan... oh please.
Really?
What a lot of bullshit!
The original masterplan was to use the UMD to force consumer to buy the same film/music twice (one UMD and one DVD) to please Sony Music and Sony Picture. It was a utter failure on that side of the business!
The second reason to use UMD, as sold to developers, was to make the protection stronger and that was also the reason why no UMD burners were/are provided to developers (to test their disc, developers use a DVD drive that "emulate" the UMD).
There was probably an argument about the fantastic size of the UMD (1.8GB) over the competition and the fact it was cheap to manufacture (contrary to memory card, i.e. Nintendo DS).
If Sony really saw the future so clearly, and the UMD was only temporary... Where is their masterplan for the consumers who bought several millions of UMDs and won't be able to play them on the new PSP?
Yeah yeah
Firstly @ "H" - What are you talking about the Walkman revolutionised portable music. Until the Walkman people couldn't listen to albums/cassettes on the go.
Are you sure you're not thinking of Mini Disc? - I think that was also Sony's doing, but that actually failed.
Anyway - I agree with what's been said. This is just Sony PR BS the whole "Yeah sure... we were supposed to do this" sort of thing.
Problem is that people will still buy PSP Go because it's 'new and cool'. Sony seem to be able to get money out of the average consumer, just like Nintendo can get money out of parents.
well
It seems to have the same product positioning problems as the Gameboy micro, smaller size, smaller screen less functionality but at a higher price. Look how well that worked out for Nintendo.
oh and +1 for a BS story from Sony PR.
Me too!
I know how Sony feel. I invented Project Natal in 1993 but did nothing about it because the market wasn't ready.
Sony are becoming a laughing stock.
