Microsoft: We must educate parents

Kids’ guardians still don’t realise that Xbox 360 and other consoles aren’t toys, says UK boss

Regional director of Xbox in the UK Neil Thompson has told MCV that parents are still erroneously treating consoles and adult games as ‘toys’ – and called on the industry to educate families.

ELSPA member Thompson said that the publishers’ body would “corral the industry” into teaching parents the difference between family and adult content.

When asked if parents still needed educatation to understand that consoles weren’t ‘kids toys’, he said:

“The simple answer is yes. As a platform holder we take our responsibility of enabling parents to make the right decisions for their children very seriously. This is why we build technologies into the platform that allow parents to switch content on or off as well as allowing them to control the amount of time the products can be used.

“The key for us is to make the setting of these controls very easy and ensure we’re also playing a leading role in publicising age ratings and their importance to parents and retailers alike. Every responsible member of the video games industry needs to step up and play as active a role as we can to keep this education process front of mind. It’s ELSPA’s job to corral the industry around this agenda and ensure we’re all doing everything we can reasonably do.”

Just goes to show that parents in the United Kingdom are just as clueless as those in America, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.

I will waggle blame at Nintendo.

it seems as the esrb is only for parents who would be offended.. the kids are not offended by the games... i grew up on games before esrb, and also ignored it after it did come out, and im just fine... its more to gaurd against lawsuits from parents who have decided throughout life to isolate themselves.. now anything they havnt seen this late in life is a big deal to their established and tailored ethics. they need help.

Consoles are kids toys. Just because us big kids, who grew up on them, now play adult orientated games on these kids toys doesn't detract from the fact they are kids toys.

Plus there is more disturbing media on TV on the six o'clock news than any xbox 360 game I have seen and more violence on the streets of London when any old peaceful protest is
supposed to be taking place than any old make believe scenario in a game.

Those policemen bashing peoples heads in with shields, those soldiers getting blown up and blowing up innocent people, those prisoners being assaulted and murdered are all real.

To him maybe consoles are just a cash generating device but to real world users these consoles are nothing more than toys / games machines.

No wonder people are confused when idiots are going round telling us red is actually not red but its blue.

He would be better placed as a spin doctor for Gordon Brown.
