Exclusive TV shows heading to Xbox 360?

Microsoft's Chris Lewis suggests it wants to be first to show football, movies and more

Microsoft believes that securing exclusive televised content can be the next step in Xbox 360’s growing domination of UK living rooms.

The firm signed a partnership deal with Pay-TV broadcaster Canal Plus in France last week – in a similar agreement to that reached with BSkyB last month in the UK.

Both deals will see Xbox 360 ‘mirror’ certain broadcasts from both channels.

But European Xbox boss Chris Lewis told MCV this week that the firm is keen to eventually acquire exclusive rights to a major broadcast– which could be movies, TV shows or football games.

When asked if Xbox could ever bid for exclusive televised content, Lewis told MCV:

“Now that would be very cool, wouldn’t it? We’ve shown our focus on getting people to think about Xbox 360 as a destination vehicle in the home. We’re fixated on it. We want to offer the kind of entertainment experiences that are both unique and exclusive.

“People are very demanding in what they consume. I’ve got nothing specific to announce, but Xbox 360 increasingly will be the place consumers go to get their entertainment.

He added: “Football’s something of a religion in Europe, and we’re undoubtedly aware of people’s desire to access live Premiership and Champions League football – which are both available to us through our Sky deal.

“Exclusivity is a part of that. There’s nothing specific we have to say right now, but you can be sure we’re focusing on the right partnerships to give that sort of exclusivity. That’s what our consumers are going to want from us.”

If football really meant that much to Microsoft why did they not pick up the recent package that was available from Setanta, I think it sold for about 30 mill (most likely wrong) which Microsoft could have easily afforded. Exclusive football that can't be watched anywhere else, they would have the sports fans in the palms of there hands!

Silly Statement M

M a silly statement to reply with, Microsoft are saying they want to offer quality TV shows on the XBOX but by buying the 30 mill contract deal that ESPN got wouldnt bring Microsoft the return they would want and they would have to start organing themselves to become a independant broadcaster which they do not want to do, so by contracts off other companies they can offer great gaming, great entertainment off there machine instead of worrying about broadcasting there own material

But surely in the long run Microsoft are aiming at people who havent yet bought a 360 and when you consider how much people were prepared to pay for a monthly Setanta subscription £15 primarily for the football, a one of cost of £120 to buy the box and a yearly xbox subscription £40 comes to roughly the same amount as a years subscription for setanta.
However I can understand where your coming from but surely Microsoft need to take this kind of risk to attract the audience they are attempting to approach. Surely In the long term creating a larger install base will be beneficial to company and the brand itself?

Sony is much better, I can't believe how low Microsoft are going with this, how awkward can they be and get, I mean this is just stupidity going on in Microsoft's Game Test Labs, Oh My Days!!
Even Nintendo's doing a better job than you and their sales are going down as the PS3 and PSP Sales are RISING!!!

@Balram

Upon reading your comment, I immediately found myself typing up a re-buttle. However, after leaning forward to get a closer look, I discovered that this comment was actually real. At that moment, I realized something. It would be cruel of me to mock my fellow man in the middle of an emotional-outpouring of this magnitude. Not that it would be disrespectful of course. Compared to the cruelty you've just showed yourself, me mocking you would seem more like a compliment then an insult.
