PS3 Home return rate under 30%

DEVELOP’09: And 80% of those who try Sony’s social hub are ‘young males’

Speaking at the Develop Conference, Sony’ Peter Edwards revealed that the return rate for PlayStation Home stands somewhere between 25-30 per cent, meaning that over 70 per cent of those who download and try the service do not return for a second time.

well let's be fair...

well let's be fair here, Home is pretty crap. and i'm not being a butt-ache by saying that, i play poker on there several times a week, i have all three Xi trophies and my avatar looks frightening like me as i have poured over it for hours with a mirror for referrence. and i've got some pretty sweet threads too.

that said, the overall offering from Home is minimal and the game spaces are a waste of space (however i believe you can now launch at least one title in a party type thing from Home so that's good, SOCOM or something?).

What has to be pointed out is that it is still in the Beta phase so it's not being pushed as Sony's final vision for the project. there are some painful shortfalls, and a few things that should be disgustingly simple but just aren't there, for example i should be able to upload a photo into a frame in my Home space, but i can't. why is that so hard? oh, it's not, Home's just crap ATM:)

still, i've seen some improvements over the last 8 months, and it was a nice touch being able to watch the Sony E3 expo on there. given some time i think it'll be pretty sweet, but right now while it's still in Beta there are very few reasons to return. Sony seems to love making us wait.

Beta No Excuse

tom, by all means we should be fair to Sony, but saying home is still in beta is like saying World of Warcraft is in beta because it still gets patched.

Sony's problem is highlighted best by my own problem - most of my mates have 360's and Sony's online offering is not strong enough to swing the hardcore Live users. If Sony can get them then 6 months down the line they bring with them the more casual users, and it's all easy from that point.

Added to that the fact that the European Home is the most barren of all the country offerings, and it is not hard to see why Home is a train wreck.

I believe all Sony needs is an interface that does what Xbox Live does at it's core - meet and game with friends with near perfect reliability - and they can work on the wacky stuff when that works. I can rarely join friends first time on COD4.

I recently read someone calling Home "A complex solution in search of a problem."

At the moment it doesn't do anything that you can't do in any other mutiplayer game.

It takes ages to load each room and I can't be bothered, and when you finally do get into a room there's nothing you can do!

sorry John, but comparing Home to WOW like that is BS. Home is free and 8 mnths old. WOW is years old and makes good money to keep itself going. everything gets patched these days, the real fact of the matter is that when you load up Home it says "Beta". we all know the difference betweena Beta and a full game so there we are.

still, we agree it's pretty crap so no need to fall out over it. and i totally agree they just need two very simple things: good chat and party launching. and also the state of not only the EU Home but also PSN/store is a pain the arse. it's easy to see why sales and return rates are sucking balls.

the fact is it's not even half the service it should be and Sony know that. everybody knows that. and given that Sony recently appointed a new cheif for the EU Home space, where are the f***in results?

every comment so far is absolutely correct. if Sony want return rates then they have to give us someting to come "home" to.
