Microsoft: Blu-ray threw Sony off strategy

Aaron Greenberg says distraction of HD discs forced Sony to forget about core audience importance

Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg has stated that Sony’s insistence on selling PS3 on its credentials as a Blu-ray player as much as a games console has knocked the firm off track, allowing Xbox 360 to maintain its momentum.

“We started in the inner circle, and we'll continue to deliver those core experiences – going after them first was important,” he told Gamasutra.

“I think for Sony, what in many ways kind of threw them off that strategy was what happened with the PS2 and the DVD player phenomenon. They kind of expected that to happen with the PS3 and the Blu-ray.”

Microsoft is just sore that their HD-DVD drive was dead in the water, now its down to slagging off their competitors hardware.... Very mature. The 360 had far too much momentum before the PS3 appeared, plus its pricing due to its bare-bones structure

Microsoft played it smart. They were first to market and did not commit to a HD format by not including it in their console. Poor Sony got bogged down with a very expensive blu-ray player. You can get a player these days for £99

Hey, The way i look at it, PS3 comes with you you need/don't need in one large package,Including Bluray. The 360 is sold piece by piece, with the most important advantage of have alll the add-ons that you buy as you need them. Until Bluray becomes standard, PS3 have a hell of a lot o catching up to do.

The future of PS3

360 has more games, and the graphics are equal, if not sometimes better on the 360 for some games because of the complexity of the cell processor and writing games to make the most of it. Sony need to get their backsides into gear, because upscaling players are producing brilliant results and probably putting people off the price of Blu-Ray and the "never finished" BD formats that left so many with expensive players that won't play new movies. Sony deserve to go bust because they refuse to give customers what they want.

Both great machines, Xbox good for entry level and mater stroke allowing you to buy different bits as you need them, PS3 wonderfully crafted and silent running, better reliablility and blue ray is a nice to have. It's all down to the developers as to which games are better, surely theres room in this world for both consoles to co-exist with neither needing to "go bust" I have a PS3 but will prob get an Xbox 360 also, as I believe there are pro's and con's to both.
Anyway! its the Wii thats selling by the bucket load??? I think nintendo sucker punched them all!!!!

I have both, but much prefer to play games on the 360 purely because I find the controller far better than the Sony versions. More ergonomic and far better feeling (certainly for FPS). I only use my PS3 for watching films

PS3 Blu-Ray

I'm with Scott @11, I use the PS3 for Blu-ray films regularily now but not for games - the faff of downloading from the BD onto the HD seems archaic and removes all the immediacy of 'having a quick game of'.

In this time poor world we live the 360 does a brilliant job of allowing me to just dive in and play a quick game of Peggle or similar with the least fuss. It just feels easier somehow.

Conversely I think the PS3 is a better lounge media hub - pictures, vids etc. which I think was Sony's plan from the outset.
