Microsoft’s Shane Kim says it’s simply a matter of ‘when’ platform holder enters portable market
Whilst question marks remain over Microsoft’s intentions to make a gaming machine of its MP3 player Zune, the Xbox platform holder IS planning a foray into the handheld gaming space, according to corporate VP Shane Kim.
When asked about a possible Microsoft handheld, Kim told Kikizo: “For us, it's a matter of focusing on 'when', because if we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like Project Natal.
“So we've chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we're building a service in Live that will extend to other platforms. No question about it.
“So the question will be, how do we enter into that market. Do we do our own device? Do we create our own phone? That's a question for the company itself. Do we continue to go down the Windows Mobile path which is that path that we're on today?
“But believe me, we understand the importance of that device in people's lives.”

cool
looks prety nice, if this is an acurate pic, hope MS support theirs better than sony does, im sure they will, they could bring some great games to this handheld

It's just a mock-up.
Handheads are dead
The hand held gaming market is dying, and give it 5 years will be extinct. The future is in mobile phone based gaming, not yet another bit of kit to lug around in your pocket. One device to rule them all, phone, internet, music, video, gaming, camera is the only way to go!
Erm...
Not sure if the sales stats support that, Allan. In fact, if you take a look you will see that handheld gaming has been outselling console gaming for quite some time now.
Mockup
Does anyone remember the Atari Lynx? That mock up really reminds me of it. :)
Mock ups
There's a whole master collection of Xbox portable mock ups in the original kikizo link, for mock up fetishists.
Mobile Gaming
Mobile gaming will take over in the future, just look at the iphone for example. Games look much better than DS and they have hit a billion downloads which shows they are selling. Only thing is needed is better controls. I prefer my iphone over my PSP and DS any day of the week as do all my mates.
defo not dying
yeah, handheld sales are dying; my hole. the fact that they are cheaper (OK so not the PSP GO! lol) and portable means...well, why am i even trying to explain?!?!
personally i'm not too keen on the above design, but if Xbox can bring LIVE to a handheld, esp if they did something like mobile internet with access to LIVE all bundelled in with your Gold subscription fee...everybody else should quite rightly shiz themselves.
i do agree with Allan so far as "phone, internet, music, video, gaming, camera is the only way to go!" and so far that's the Iphone. however they don't have games like God of War:COO, and i'm pretty sure the up-comming line up for the PSP will eclipse it for the hardcore marktet, and DSi will rule the casuals.
if the PSP GO! had everything we want ie camera, phone and touch-screen as well as second analogue stick, it would be SOOOOOO expensive it's not even worth thinking about right now. how expensive is an Iphone? and i've already heard rumours about a PSP2, despite the GO! not even being released yet.
portable gaming is coming in to it's prime if anything. Gran Tourismo, MGS, Assasin's Creed and a butt load of other massive, and tiny, games and apps coming to the PSP, DSi simply kicking ass for casuals, Iphone carving a pretty deep nieche and having supreme functionality...
Xbox are going to have to have pretty f***ing big ideas if they're gonna break in to the portable market. not saying they can't, but they're up against some strong and established opposition. not that that's stopped them before.
if they don't meet all the criteria outlined above, they may as well not bother
Atari Lynx
Of course I remember the Atari Lynx. I launched it on an unsuspecting public in the mid 90's! Yes, this looks a little like it. Have two Lynx's at home still to play Checkered Flag linked up. It really was a hugely underated piece of kit, and a lot of what is happening in handheld business these days owes it a debt.
Handhelds dying?

Atari Lynx
Mr Still! How the devil are you? Still got my Lynx somewhere. Toki wasmy favourite.
Killer iphone
With an installed userbase of over 84 million (which was from October of last year, it's probably over 100 million now), the DS/DSi isn't going anywhere in the near future. The DSi is selling 500-750 thousand units a month right now.
Even the PSP has hit 50 million units sold worldwide.
Since the iPhone launched a few years ago, it's sold... 21 million units. Handhelds outsell iphones at nearly 10-to-1 when you take everything into account.
Historically, we've seen that all-in-one gizmos don't hold the same long-term appeal that piecemeal units do. This is a simple fact. The iPhone especially will have a limited impact on gaming, for the simple fact that apple has decided to tether themselves to one single cell provider.
Frankly, I know of nobody who wants to deal with controllers, analog sticks, nubs or buttons when trying to make a phone call, and I suspect this will be the status quo for a while to come.
Contract Gaming.
If the PSP go had the phone and touch screen built in im quite sure for a long time at least it would be a Contract Phone device similar to the I-PHONE, easy to market the thing as well. PSP 3000 is the iPod touch equivalent. PSP go is the I-Phone equivalent. It would negate the expense if you got it as a phone contract,
Because I agree the first phone to market that is a Phone, a good camera, a good mp3 player, with the ability to play hardcore and casual games with internet access built. Will have the entire market basking in its glory.
Iphone is expensive. But look how many people have it. I find the PSP go very interesting, but im shocked at the lack of real new features and the appalling battery.
If Xbox decide to go to market with a gaming device that is a phone, camera, media centre, gaming device with live capabilities via built in internet. I think and im speaking as someone who is very against Microsoft. But its safe they would have it all in a generation.
Whilst the psp go has no ability to play PS2 games. I can picture Microsoft aiming big style with this device. To play all digital xbox origonals, play all arcade titles aswell as the own first party titles. And I think Microsoft could make it the size of the pspgo or iphone and not lose a beat.
I say it’s a good thing. Lets hope they announce it at next years E3

Chevos
It will sell and if acheivements are included and you can use your gamer tag on it i'm buying one!
Xbox Portable
I think it is a great idea, not overly keep on the mock-up picture thou, they should listen to all the comments about dual analogue sticks on the psp.
I'd love the idea of live on the go, but free, I really doubt they would do that.
Just hope they don't make the psp mistake and make it media optical based.
