US: Ghostbusters sells 1m

Atari strikes gold with licensed console game success

Some say that licensed games have enjoyed their time in the sun, but Atari has proved many naysayers wrong with news that licensed action outing Ghostbusters: The Video Game has sold over 1m copies in North America.

Of course, unlike in Europe where all non-PS3 owners are having to wait until October to get their hands on the game, the title was released on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, PS2 and DS on the other side of the Atlantic.

“We are very pleased with the performance of Ghostbusters,” Atari CEO Jim Wilson stated. “I credit the game’s quality as well as the incredible support from both the established and new fan-base all helping to make this a retail success.

“Ghostbusters appears to be a strong and relevant movie-based franchise videogame independent of a brand-new theatrical release. We look forward to the continued success of the title as interest and acclaim increase across North America.”

...how many of those sales are to 360 owners in UK/Europe importing and therfore won't be buying when it's finally out over here?

All the same, those figures can only be good for Atari, so good for them. :)

Activision dropped the ball getting rid of the Ghostbusters. They should have believed in this license.

Activision's balls a bouncing

Activision are dropping the ball generally at the moment. These are the same people that stated the PS3 is too expensive and then raised the retail price of Modern Warfare 2 to 55 pounds in the UK. They're also the same people who dropped the ball on Brutal Legend & are in a legal battle over it's release.

Go on EA, you know you don't need the "who's the most evil developer" crown anymore, give it to Activision, they deserve it.

Balls not dropped

Fair enough, Activision made a mistake dropping this game. That said, who knows how a game would have turned out if it was released a year ago? But as for the other things ...

The PS3 is too expensive to develop for.

People will pay extra for MF2 because it's that good. That's very good business.

Brutal Legend is a bit more complicated than the other games they dropped because they didn't really let it go free like the others.

It was a business decision

The reason Activision didn't go for Ghostbusters was a business decision made by Bobby Kotick on what criteria is given to a game that Activision wants to pursue. It has nothing to do with game quality or how much people go misty-eyed over the license (which is what happened with GB).

It's all down to whether the licensed property can be annualised well or not. And GB isn't a good to be annualised because the scope of what the GB do is too limited. That is the reason Bobby decided to pass on it. By all accounts, there were several high-up people at Activision who wanted to keep GB, but Bobby overruled them because it didn't fit within his strict criteria.

I am not passing judgement on whether this was smart or not (so no outraged attacks on this post please), and I know that there will be people reading this who throw their arms up in despair and will rant on about how stupid Activision is and how evil big publishers are, and others who will understand what this is at its core - a purely business decision.

(One thing to bear in mind as well is that, sadly, these days 1m units is not considered a success at a company like Activision because they're so huge and expectations are now so ludicrous.)

In your face Kotick

In your face kotick! That's just the US figures as well. As for Brutal Legend. Holding it back so that no-one can play it is just retarded. Kotick doesn't understand the industry and no-one in it likes him. Why doesn't he take his unwanted self back to a cattle ranch and live with more simple times. I really ate kotick and am finding it hard not to swear.

Doesn't understand the industry?

Doesn't understand the industry? Kotick completely reformed Activision from its original structure, leading to its current position as either the top or second-to-top publisher in the industry. Say what you will about the ruthless firings and the stripping out of the "soul" of the company, but the man plainly knows what he's doing in business terms.
