Miyamoto questions digital distribution

Says that the future of video games will not be dominated by retail-free models

Nintendo’s boss of development and games industry legend Shigeru Miyamoto has questioned the belief that a digital-only future for games retail is inevitable.

“The thing for us is we really don't see the future of video games being merely confined to digital distribution or moving solely or even to a majority of our products being distributed that way,” Miyamoto told The Mercury News.

“Entertainment is something that will not just become digital. If I look at Wii MotionPlus, this is something that you're not doing via digital distribution.

The acclaimed developer added that the impact digital distribution has had on the games industry to date is minimal, though he did concede that it has opened some new doors.

“The hope for business departments always is how they can reduce costs. So if you look at digital distribution with the fact that you don't need money for packaging and things like that, it's great.

“As a developer, it's not changing how much money you're bringing in; it really doesn't change what we're focused on.

“However, I think it creates a lot of opportunity for a lot of different developers. Personally, I'm one of those guys who, even if I have all the songs from iTunes, I want the CD as well. It's something that makes me — I feel more reassured with that physical media.”

RSD v ESD

Mr Miyamoto is right. A lot of people are suggesting ESD will almost completely take over from packaged retail titles. This is total romance, they should first understand all the psychology of the way markets and buying habits change and the time scales involved. The inertia of change, perceived value of purchase, so many factors to take into account that affect this; I will personally buy the person a beer or ten, who can forecast accurately the rate of change over the relevant period of time, and what platforms and genre of title will be most affected and which ones least? At the moment my understanding is around 80/20 to 75/25 split RSD/ESD (Steam). This is a significant ratio in revenue terms but is the initial honeymoon period for ESD, now it will be a slower pace of change. So many people still have half a meg b/w or less, try a 500Mb+ download with a crappy "Closed Reach" BT line.... no thanks, its quicker to walk to the store!

Well no, it would be hard to distribute hardware digitally. :)

If you listen closely

If you listen closely, you can hear Miyamoto's relevance evaporating. He's finally gone clueless. Two years from now the absurdity of his comments will be clear for all to see.
