Telegraph predicts £260 PS3 Slim

Claims Sony has ordered enough parts to make one million PS3 consoles this Q3

Sony will release the long-rumoured PS3 Slim later this year in the UK priced at £260, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.

That will be for the 40GB model, the paper claims. It adds that Sony is also prepping an 80GB SKU which will retail for more.

It’s all speculation at the moment and comes just days after Amazon Germany appeared to list a ‘PlayStation 3 Konsole Slim’ on its site, though closer investigation showed that this was a user-generated listing and not one from the etailer itself.

The Telegraph’s prediction is fuelled partly by claims that Sony has ordered enough parts to manufacture one million PS3 consoles this Q3 – twice as many as it did in Q2. Though perhaps this is not surprising considering the normal sales uplift enjoyed by the industry in Q3 and, in particular, Q4.

Many commentators are expecting an announcement relating to a PS3 redesign at Gamescom later this month. Sony’s keynote at the Cologne event is scheduled to last three hours.

£260

£260 is still too much. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft dropped the Elite to £199 and the Arcade to £99. This Christmas more than any other, parents and young people really are going to look at the price consoles.

When the entry level price for an Xbox is £99 and the PS3 is £260, which do you think they are going to go for. And don't argue that you get more included the with PS3 as it's a pointless argument.

Almost all non-gamers and most gamers won't know what you do and don't get with a console so the only way they'll differentiate between the two consoles is price, and it'll be a big difference.

i agree that a 40gb PS3, slim or not, for £260 won't change Sony's forutnes. but this article is just speculation and has very little by way of fact.
personally i don't know about a slim PS3 but i think it's unlikely for this year. price cut definately, but even then not a massive one.
i'd be more inclined to believe a regular 80gb PS3 with a nice games bundles (AT LEAST 2 of the biggest PS3 games) and 2 controllers for £250 is more probable.

guess we'll have to wait until gamescom before we have any more news, but i think they'll be pushing the PSP more there than a new PS3. as we all know as soon as they mention a preice drop current sales will grind to a swift halt.

BTW, WTF has this to do with 360?

only the other week sony claimed to have reduced the production cost of the PS3 by 70% when it was first released one of the main arguments was the blu ray playback, and that the blu ray diode was so expensive that was way back when a blu ray player cost upwards of £600 so the PS3 was hailed as a cheaper alternative but now you can buy one for under £150 so that is no longer an excuse they can use.
As for package deals they are unlikely to include extra controllers as the make to much money from them ,how many people do you know that own any console but only one controller my guess would be not many most probably none if you have kids you'll have several so thats an extra £35 per child simple economics keep the customer coming back for more.
If they do a 40g version it should come in at most £250 otherwise it doesn't leave much scope for a price drop on any higher spec model unless maybe they don,t do a price drop for the higher end model the but increase the hard drive maybe a 160g version for the same price ?

Monty is right, they'll never bundle with controllers... Especially after announcing their new coloured range - that's incremental revenue for them!

I can see added value through games for sure... I must admit, I was reluctant to fork out for my PS3... and actually in the end I got it as a Christmas gift - but back in the day I forked out £250 for my PS2 + GT3 and never battered an eye lid - I think given what the console can do and what we can look forward to, £260 isn't that bad, is it??

They relly need to get GT5 out, that game will shift and help sell the console!! Cologne will definitely be interesting :)

I totally agree with Zildjian, I remember buying a PS2 for silly money and I didn't think twice. I guess it's different now due to the current financial climate and the cheaper alternatives.

If it is £260, I'm guessing that'll include Uncharted 2/GT5 and a 80GB HDD. Of course I'm guessing, but I think Sony will release a 40GB version for £199.

Can't wait to go to Cologne!

If.. and IF they drop it to £199, I'll be impressed.. Can I see it? No.

Personally I think although £260 might be worth it for what your getting, it's still too expensive in the current market, and I don't think it's going to sell much unless they get it down to th £200 mark.
