UK games market bounces back after slump

Wii Sports Resort causes market value to jump 16 per cent

The UK video games market’s weekly value has bounced back from its mid-summer slump following the launch of Wii Sports Resort.

According to MCV calculations, based on Gfk-ChartTrack/ELSPA’s weekly reports, the market had tumbled week-on-week since June, with sales falling to £16.9 million for the week ending July 10th.

However, the launch of Wii Sports Resort caused a 16 per cent upturn in weekly sales, with market value reaching £18.6 million for the week ending July 25th. Unit sales hit 907,501.

This week’s sales figures shows the market held firm, with value down just two per cent to £18.3 million, while unit sales rose two per cent to 923,204.

Despite the good news, there’s just a handful of promising games planned for August, including Batman Arkham Asylum, Wolfenstein and Ashes Cricket 2009.

September promises more, with The Beatles Rock Band, Halo 3: ODST, Professor Layton And Pandora's Box, Need For Speed Shift and Dirt 2.

Game sales always go slow at summer, ill let you into a little secret, that becasue no one releases any, then rushes them all out in novemeber when no one can afford to buy them all.

My advise to the gaming industy.

Forget seasons they dont exist anymore.

Release games thoughout the entire year.

Spread sales over the year.

Lesser titles will do better as there not competing for space.

Triple AAA will always sell way whenever you release it.

Indie RIP

Great the Publishers must be rubbing their hands coz they are the only ones making money.

All Indies bought these at £37, Asda was selling for £37 and everyone else was selling at £39 so for me as an Indie all my customers went to Asda, leaving me with very little sales.

So hailing this week as a success because of this game is FALSE.

Yes I agree it sold a lot but unless you were Game, HMV etc who get preffered rates, very little converts to actual profit.

I sold 20 on the first weekend, due to poor we don't make enough money ASDA, at £40 so I made £60 profit which I shouldn't complain at but this article claims it was the saviour of the Games industry
