PS3 outperforms Xbox 360 for EA

PS3 outperforms Xbox 360 for EA

Both PC and PS3 prove more profitable platforms than Xbox for EA in quarter ending June 30th

Whilst it was the Wii, thanks to the success of EA Sports Active, that really shone for EA in its latest fiscal quarter, just as big a surprise is the fact that the publisher’s PS3 returns far outstripped those coming from Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Wii revenues lead the charge at $161m, up from $109m in the same quarter last year. Next up was PC, which courtesy of The Sims 3, bought in a considerable $124m.

Next in line was PS3 with total revenues of $121m, markedly higher than Xbox 360, which generated $73m for EA. The PSP was also a surprise victor over DS with revenues of $38m compared to DS’ $28m.

North America remained EA’s most lucrative territory, producing $343m of revenues. In comparison, Europe generated $258m with Asia at $43m.

Xbox owners must be more discerning and PS3 owners are just glad to get anything new.
Sadly EA games stopped being market leading greats long ago.

Well, at least they're not the evil tyrants that they used to be. Activision has that crown at the moment, what with Bobby Koticks comments stating that the PS3 needs a price drop before Activision advised that they're putting up the price of MW2 in the UK to £55, & then there's the whole Brutal Legend legal battle.
As for 360 owners being discerning, not sure about that, they bought a 360 after all, & the unsubtle hint that the PS3 still has no games is so 2007 - catch up!

Since there is something good to report about the PS3 you have to blame/shun EA for the games.

Wow. Whatever.

EA is known for their sporting franchise but they make other games as well.

It's nice to see that PS3 owners are supporting EA. Hope fully EA should return the love and use the PS3 as the lead console.

does any body know how exclusivity effected this? if there were more EA titles on the PS3 it would put the figures in prespective. but then if those figures are negligable (sp?) then well done Sony. puts up two fingers to those from Activision and Valve who say it's not a profitable platfrom.

That's Microsofts console sales numbers aren't Microsoft say they are...

Whilst Sony report SOLD TO CONSUMERS, Microsoft (and Nintendo) still report the SHIPPED numbers. In addition, a vast amount of Microsoft's numbers are RROD failures, in which owners have simply bought replacements.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Xbox and PS3 userbase was almost identical these days...

@Mark? What? Sony have never quoted sold to – Microsoft used to have the most accurate figures when it batch numbers and upcoming demand to gauge the number of consoles sold – but this generation, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all use shipment figures.

There have been official figures out that have shown Sony is lagging behind Microsoft by a substantial margin – are you trying to argue against those figures because they don't fit in with your fanboy view of the world?

The thing everyone has neglected to consider (and I'm not pretending to know whether or not this is the case) is the amount EA makes per game – it won't be the same for each console, and in some cases, the 360's revenue might be lower because of retail and distribution pressures forcing its price down compared to the PS3's.

In otherwords, (and I'm guessing, but these are for illustration only) if EA makes £20 in revenue (not profit) per copy of FIFA on the 360, and £25 in revenue on the PS3, then EA might have sold less copies on the PS3, but made more money.

I'm not saying that is the case, but just makes you look like an utter fool when you jump to conclusions because you managed to twist a story to suit your argument that the PS3 is better than the 360.

Sony is doing good right now and the place to take over, Xboox and the Wii had a head start oh 1yr head start and you know people is waitting for a price cut to have one DAVEBG if you don't already have one with your Xbox and lying about it. Sony would already be #1 if the people who have the PS2 just buy one, there waitting for the price cut to happen just like all the Xbox and Wii people are.

I'd agree with Malik that the European Install base of PS3 will ramp up Fifa considerably in that territory. As a gamer as well as an industry employee, I have to commend EA on the ground it made last year. Saw some fantastic new IP's come through like Deadspace/Mirrors edge etc, and new IP's is something PS3 has been slow off the mark with compared to Xbox 360, so maybe this was a factor? For the record, and without comparing the consoles directly, what I would say to all these fanboys is that at least microsoft have developed a strategy and are sticking with it. We thought price drops, and they delivered. We had the New XBLA Experiance delivered. We had a huge marketing campaign delivered, and now Xbox 360 owners can look forward to Project Natal hopefully being delivered as well for a next gen experience.

As for Sony, does anyone know what's happening with PS3? Oh yeah, GT5: Finished Edition might be out one day. I'm far from a fanboy, but in terms of long term strategy, I see one camp making headway, and another camp constantly retaliating with the same phrase "In Living rooms for the next 10yrs". Well, they need to show us how soon.

People are crazy... First I would like to see real numbers on the Xbox 360 sold numbers as to one console per person not jut total counts, because how many people have bought 1-4 xboxs to replace broken ones, either out of warrenty, didnt want to wait for time to get it fixed and returned. That should truly show the Install base for XBOX360 not just the number of sold units which i think is a farse. It is like saying Fiat sold 100 million cars but only 65%of the cars actuall can drive and work while the others a junked and broken from bad manufacturing. But I guess a sale is a sale even though u HAVE to sell twice as many because your product is junk, now imagine what the sales number for sony would be if 33% or more as ins XBOX360 failed, sony ps3 would probably have near the same sales numbers as xbox even a year after xbox's release.

Xbox product sales guide== Less make inferior equipment that will fail so we can sell twice as many and claim victory on JUST SALES numbers not actually working units.

Between PS3 Wii and XBOX360 SHOW ME actually working playable units in the market.

Also FOr some reason all gamer tournys are all played on freak xboxs,

which personally i think is bias, because say i never or rarely ever play a 360 and i enter a tourny now i have to learn a whole new controler which is bs, they should have ps3 and xbox comps. or make it where you can cross play systems. Then you coulod have real console wars and real fanboys claim who has the best gamers.

LOL like when i play madden or colllge football - ps3 X button is on the bottom of the 4 button key pad, opn xbox its on the left, after playing since PS1 it is instinct to push teh bottom button on ps comtroller which is a totally differnt button on xbox which is the only reaso i have ever lost any game on xbox, cus i can rarly be given a loss of PS# version of the same game

Wii 23%

I'm pretty sure that the ps3 money is also counting ps2 and psp sales, that would make alot more sense. Because if you use the sales figures from reports on individual games, typically they sell well on both systems and usually because of a larger base the 360 version sells a little to a lot more. NCAA Football and Fight Night being both examples of that. Also no exclusives to factor in so it doesn't make alot of sense if this ps3 all by itself in the equation.

Having just read in between the lines here, There is a load of Microsoft 360 fanboys (have to use that term because most of my 360 customers are 12 and need their mums to buy rubbish like fiddy cent) attacking another successful sony story. I had to laugh when my mate said that facebook was going to be on the 360 dashboard. It's been on the PS3 since launch via it's web browser. Then his defense was that the 360 had no apps. Um VidZone and Photo album aren't just pretty buttons you know. Then there is Home. I had a 360 and found that you usually end up playing games with people who are enjoying their 1st beer. I am a Nintendo zealot. Hence the username. However I hate the wii! I have played several of it's main games and have felt like hey just rehashed old gamecube titles. I have had my PS3 since 2007 and have enjoyed games such as Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted and Infamous. The list goes on. Point is. What do you have that is actually worth it's weight in gold on the 360? None of the major releases by microsoft have warranted buying that console. Banjo-kazooie and rez are the only reasons I would own a 360, Until it wnet wrong!

Xbox will then suffer the bow out. Note this - every 360 owner I know - every one of them - has now had their 360 modded and they pay no more than £4 for a game.

MS are getting exactly what they deserve - as soon as my 2nd 360 rrod [this happened when i took it out of the box new] i vowed never to return. I think EA and Sony both know why Sony/EA are doing well.

*Bangs head* – I may as well do it to myself. I seriously doubt it would have any affect on these morons.

Look, we know why you're so rampant – you're shit scared because your console is in last place. You know the market can only support two consoles and that the one in last place will eventually begin losing support – you've spent a lot on it and you don't want to have been wasted.

You're attacking the 360 in some vain hope anyone outside the 1% of gamers who actually read the internet will take heed and not buy a 360 so that the PS3 can have a chance to catch up and it won't be the one all the publishers drop support for.

Seriously – wake up. Sony got arrogant and fucked up, they're finally starting to do things right, but until the console comes down to below £199 in the current climate, it will never get out of third place. Stop acting as corporate foot soldiers, looking for the praise of your master – they really couldn't give a fuck.

The same goes for 360 and Wii fanboys for that matter.

and you want to know why.
its simple if i remember right EA announced beginning of last year that they were going to use the PS3 as their lead platform for MP games.
and wow now the ps3s selling better for them i wonder why.
its because the quality is being shown, if version a is better than version b than of corse people are going to buy version a.
now only if other companys followed suit they may be able to pull in some more cash and save them allot of headaches.
thats you activision stop being such hypocrites and change your development strategies .
i love companys these days, they create something than it flops and its the systems fault never theirs.
LMAO
guys if you actually change the game and put some work into it than may be it would sell better.
turning out the same game with new skins and lvls aint going to make you money.
releasing 5 guitar hero games per year aint going to make you money, if you changed those and make each of them have something new than it would sell well.
gota love it, its not my fault the game sucks its yours, even though im the one who made the game.
im starting to think game developers are 10 year olds, either that or they thing were stupid.
well people keep buying the games so may be they are.

has anyone here actually bothered to look up the EA financial report themselves? They make no reference whatsoever that either the 360 or the PS3 are doing well or not. They only refer to the Wii as providing 14% of their revenue. If you look at the data you will see that the PS3 has cumulative revenue of approx $700 million for 2009 financial year whilst the 360 has approx 1000 million. The non GAAP revenue sits at 23% for the PS3 and 15% for 360 whereas the GAAP figures show the reverse, as 14% for PS3 and 22% for 360. Those are hardly figures that celebrate the success of the PS3.

I hear a lot of accusations of fear on the part of PS owners who are worried their console is in dead last... I have a few facts for you Xbox pals;

1.) Playstation 3, despite the higher price, has sold more than the 360 over the same period of time. What I mean is; Playstation 3 has sold faster than Xbox since its release date, and that scares they 360 owners who are even aware that is true because it means eventually they're going to get overtaken - especially if we're weeks away from a $100 price cut.

2.) Reports like this are exactly why Playstation is NOT in trouble. Software generated revenue matters more than console sales numbers, because the consoles only exist to SELL SOFTWARE. Some of you might suddenly hate EA because they're reported Xbox isn't their number 1 revenue generating console , but the fact is they're still enormous players in this industry - sorry. And guess what? This isn't the first time EA has reported this either, do some fact checking.

3. PS3 is already the lead platform for many EA titles. Madden since 09 I believe, and I remember Mirror's Edge leading on PS3 too. I'm sure there are more, those are the only two I own.

And those guys who are saying PS3 has no great exclusives coming up are just not reading;
GT5 (was mentioned up there), Uncharted 2, Ratchet Future 2, MAG, God of War 3, inFamous (out), Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, MMO final fantasy & VS down the road too....

I own both consoles and while I know many of you can't wait for that 'new' Halo game based on a 3 year old graphics engine, the only game I want to play is Mass Effect 2 - which you're in serious danger of losing exclusive rights on since that EA company you've been bashing owns it now.

Good luck in 2010, xbots.

Also Microsoft charges more per game for me then Sony for downloads. But both platforms provide a nice gaming experiance.
