UK CHARTS: Ashes bowls to the top

Wii Sports Resort toppled as Codemasters becomes first UK publisher to claim number one since early 2007

The reign of Wii Sports Resort has ground to a halt earlier than expected at the top of the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40 with Codemasters’ Ashes 2009 stumping Nintendo’s title after its first weekend of release.

In doing so Codemasters becomes the first UK publisher to claim the top spot since Eidos did so in week six 2007 with flight sim Battlestations Midway.

Ashes 2009 becomes Codemasters’ first number one since Brian Lara International Cricket 2005, though the new title outsold the former by a factor of three, becoming the biggest cricket launch title in UK chart history.

Wii Sports Resort manages to hold on to second place despite a 49 per cent drop in sales. Ubisoft’s Call of Juarez does well to recoup three places, capturing seventh position.

Also upwardly mobile are Mario Kart Wii (up three places to eighth) and Disney’s G-Force, which jumps from 26th to ninth following the cinema release of the film.

I'm sure Tomb Raider Legend & Anniversary & Underworld were #1 in the UK when they were releases and Eidos was the UK's largest publisher then. So this article seems a bit silly.

Don't Mention The Cricket

You may be sure, but sadly you're wrong. Tomb Raider Legend was released in 2006, and only hit number two. Anniversary didn't hit number one either and Underworld was released in the peak pre-Christmas 2008 sales period and so didn't make number one.

So congrats to Codies - the game's not bad either - helps with wiping away the reality of Headingley :-(

It's multiformat against single sku Wii game though and not much else out there. I've played it and poor presentation aside it's not too shabby. Also the first cricket game on PS3 and of course LIVE (2007 Xbox was limited LIVE). Think it will drop very quickly as the hardcore cricket fans will move on as will the chance of a real Ashes victory ;) FOAD
