PS3 cut 'won't worry' Microsoft

Xbox exec Chris Lewis says 360 is in a good place as industry braces for double price cut

Microsoft's Chris Lewis has said that any possible PS3 price drop from Sony at Gamescom next week won’t affect its plans – which are now widely expected to include a price drop of its own.

“We are in a good place in terms of the value we offer,” the Xbox EMEA VP told MCV.

“We have a plan and a rhythm we are marching to – and we won’t be knocked off that cadence in terms of what the opposition might do.”

Sony is believed to be preparing to unveil its brand new PS3 Slim next Tuesday at the Gamescom show in Germany.

In addition, MCV has been led to believe that Microsoft will be countering Sony's move with a price cut of its own – most likely scrapping the Pro Xbox 360 SKU and dropping the Elite 360 by £60 to £169.99.

So Chris Lewis, a redesigned PS3 doesn't worry you. Just as well really, you might have had to react with a price drop of your own console. Sorry, what's that, the 360 is dropping in price? What an ar8e. As soon as I saw rumour that M$ were dropping the price of their brick it confirmed the rumours of PS3 price cut / slim console. My bet? £200 entry point for new PS3 SKU.

one thing i will say is im glad microsoft are discontinuing the pro pack,
alot of parents just seem to feel confused about the 3 consoles, i never understood why MS didnt just offer a low and high end console with upgrades like big hard drives as accessories without all 3 consoles, would have been cheaper for them in the long run also,
if the slim comes out it will sell well along with a price cut, for some reason the ps3 console has been selling alot just lately, even before infamous released, a price cut and re-design will increase sales.
we have alot of customers with ps2s waiting to upgrade when the price is right, then they have a large selection of games to play through

360 slim

Kind of a shame MS doesn't seem to have a slim 360 ready for this Xmas. I thought they might closely follow the PS2's cycle, where a slim appeared in time for its 5th christmas. This will be 360's christmas.

A pricecut can't really comprehensively counter Sony's slim - new hardware + pricecut results in more buzz, gives people something to ooh and aah over asides from price, and injects a bit of freshness into the platform, something PS3 really needs if it's going to shake off the last couple of years.

with Modern warfare coming out even the halo franchise wont sell as large, dont get me wrong it will shift alot of units, but MW2 will be a huge seller, and with a new mario & sonic game the wii will still do very well, if natal was out this year i would say MS would have the best xmas, but since its mainly halo odst, forza, left 4 dead 2, rest being multiplat i dont think anyone can say that for sure, there are alot of ps3 first party games due.

Who cares about PS3 fanboys now...all they want is to know that they got the best console but that is nowhere near from happening. Xbox360 has got a lot of good exclusives...maybe the PS3 has got more exclusive but they had carried on with the same developers like Insomniac that built franchise games on ps2 which is a very long time. M$ has still room to buy or create more IP

Nothing can be better for the industry this XMAS than 3 competetive consoles all with prices low as possible. It doesnt really matter to the industry If PS3 is better than Wii or Wii better than 360. As long as the right prices are in position then we can all do well this Xmas.

We definatley have a great line up for games, probably better than ever before with COD 6, & Fifa both multi SKU that headline his. So i think as an idustry we should be thankful for price drops and not use it as a catalyst for arguments of what is best.

The fact is we all want 3 fantastic consoles that all sell + a great hand held in the DS, But as an Indie retailer i hat the thought of the PSP GO, no soft ware sales off the back of its launch and possibly more expensive than PS3

Who cares about slim? Mine site under a shelf, if it was slim, it would still sit under a shelf. I'm not in the habit of carrying my consoles around, I prefer to just play them.

Instead of wasting more cash making pointless versions of the hardware, how about they put the hardware BC back in? How about they remove the region lock for PS2 games? How about they fix the hardware so I don't have to keep going into the system setup to change the sound output device? How about they give us some of those 120fps 1080p games they promised.

So much to fix and yet their answer is, "here's a slim version that is completely pointless". All I am waiting for is the announcement about what else they have removed.

Everything Sony does regarding price cuts always has a "here's what we took out" announcement to go with it. Although, as PSPGo is proving, sometimes they take something out and put the price up instead.

The PS3 Slim is coming, we just don't know when and how much it'll be. It'll fail if it doesn't sell for under £200. I can see a 360 price drop coming to spoil the PS3 party (an Elite for £170). Most PS2 owners haven't swapped over to the PS3 because of the high price (around £300), not because of the lack of top games. But Sony being Sony, I can see the PS3 Slim costing over £200. If Sony wants to do a PS2 (around 140 million sold), it better wake-up with its pricing.

WTF LeeC

I don't really understand your post LeeC, first you start off talking about how you don't play your PS3 anyway, why didn't you just stop there? If you don't play it, what does it matter what Sony adds to it?

The BC is what made it so costly to begin with and, while I have a 60gb, Sony has made a good effort as of late to put awesome PS1 games on the PSN, and I have no idea what you're talking about with the region lock.

Second, why would you ever need to change the sound output device so many times that it becomes a nuisance? since you said "I'm not in the habit of carrying my consoles around," why would you ever need to change it that much. Also, Sony never promised 120fps with 1080p games, most PC games can't even get up to that framerate.

Lastly, how is a cost-efficient slim version pointless? Sure, Sony has always been about the ultimate profits and not necessarily about how many consoles they moved, but this shows that they need to get more consoles in people's homes so they can buy some of the killer IPs that are coming out. I mean the only thing I can agree with you is that the PSPGo is too expensive, but not that they took something important.

Xbox vs PS3

yeah XBOX has outsold PS3, but how many of those figures were broken Xbox's that were being replaced to keep spoilt kids happy. The 360 was a flawed protype on release as we saw with the red ring of death, and the elite is how it should have been right from the start, where as Sony got it right, fair enough it was a little pricey, but it was the better machine right from the start.

PS3 is quality, Xbox is quantity

guys have you read the latest sale figures latley, the gap between xbox and ps3 in europe is as small as a few hundred thousand consoles now. the biggest gap in favour of xbox is in the states and the biggest gap in favour of ps3 is in japan. total differance is about 5million world wide now in favour of xbox. thats nothing considering about 10 million xbox's broke.
i have all 3 platforms, hence the name, and peoples theorys that because xbox has sold more than ps3 makes it better needs to dissapear because by that logic it means the Wii is better than the pair, and i think every one accepts the Wii is not the best kit on sale this generation.

truth is people have stayed with xbox, through the failed hardware, and the lack of HD DVD existance. and now they are moving on towards the PS3, the sales figures say it all. if its digital, or media based PS3 is the one console that will do it all this generation, normal dvd's, blu ray, digital downloadable movies etc etc etc. it may have took them longer but as previous posters have said. sony have got it right. and its about time they did.

NPD & Gkn show the enormous (and growing) Xbox lead in the world's 2 biggest markets (USA & Europe).
Even Japan isn't what it once was for PS3.

No biggee guys, it's PS3rd this gen.
There will be no salvation, even if PS3 sales doubled it would take until 2015 for them to overtake Xbox.
Ain't going to happen so get over it.

Besides, PS3 offers nothing over Xbox. except a bigger price ticket and less high scoring games.

I'm not being provokative, just telling it how it is.

Enjoy your console whichever one you got for.

Sorry but you are completely wrong about Xbox & PS3 sales.
Xbox has opened a huge gap of over PS3.
Over 9 million Xboxes sold in Europe, PS3 is nowhere near that.

In the UK alone PS3 sold 2.2 million verses Xboxes almost 4 million - almost double (2 million) sales in the Uk alone.

I've got a PS3 and a 360 and they're both great machines. I wonder if MS will bite the bullet and include a blu-ray drive in future models? Would Sony allow them to? Also (and I know this is a bit nit-picky :) ), but MS really need to make the 360 quieter. I only have the 20GB model, so my games stream from the DVD drive with all the clattering and banging that that entails. :)

There will never be an Xbox Blu-ray drive.
They have no need to pay someone else for a big capacity disc to put games on.
If Microsoft do go for a bigger disc it will be one where they do not have to pay the BDA a cent in royalties and using tech they already own.
It will be the 51gb triple layer HD DVD disc and drive (the one that just missed going public before the plug was pulled).
It will offer max security (nobody will have drives or blank discs) and they already own it.

For HD movies downloading using the streaming Silverlight tech is already their preferred option (and it is very very good).

To shut your Xbox up you need to save games to the hard drive and play them from there.
Do that and it's pretty quiet.

Since Falcon the Xbox RROD rate has dropped a hell of a lot.
Jasper improves on this further to the point where it's really no longer an issue.
In the unlikely event of it happening (or the E74 problem) you have a 3yr warranty.
Which is nice.

As I said, I only have the 20GB drive, so installing games isn't an option really. Even when the DVD drive isn't going, the 360 is still a lot noisier than the PS3.

Fanboys are just people who can't afford every system. I've got all a PS3 and Wii and two Xbox's, one is flashed and one's for online gaming. I'm thinking of selling my PS3 because I hardly use the damn thing. Shame as it is an awesome bit of kit. Played COD WaW the other day and it was far more glitch prone than the 360 version. Having at least two strong console brands is the best scenerio we can possibly have, all things considered. Not only will they race to outdo each other on price, they will also push the innovation stakes forward. One thing I cant understand from respective fanboys is, why would you all wont to go back to one dominate, stale console (like the PS2) dominating the whole market again? Nostalgia is a powerful emotion, but was it really that good?
