Confusion over 360 price changes

Retail told that the price of Xbox 360 Arcade SKU and several accessories are on the up

With the industry bracing itself for an RRP drop for the top-end Xbox 360 Elite SKU this week, it now looks as if the entry-level Arcade hardware could be in for a price increase.

At the end of last week it seemed that all the evidence was pointing to an end to the Xbox 360 Pro SKU and a price drop for the high-end Xbox 360 Elite offering.

But confusion is now rife in the channel with Microsoft seemingly confirming that the Xbox 360 Arcade console is going to see an RRP increase.

Leaked documentation and sources close to MCV last week claimed that the Xbox 360 Pro is being phased out, with the Xbox 360 Elite – a SKU that includes a 120GB HDD – dropping by £60 to take its place.

This belief was given further credence by an online listing from Argos claiming that the Pro had been ‘discontinued’ – though the retailer later claimed this was an error.

However, MCV has since spoken to one UK technology retailer who confirmed that Microsoft has told retail to expect the Xbox 360 Arcade bundle to increase in price from £129.99 to £159.99.

The platform holder has also confirmed a number of price rises to many of its accessories, including joypads and headsets. In addition, the lack of any mention of the Xbox 360 Pro SKU seems to confirm its anticipated demise.

However, a closer inspection of the documentation sent to retailers seems to suggest that the Xbox 360 Arcade listing is a placeholder for an as-of-yet unspecified SKU. Whether that’s an enhanced Arcade SKU or a reduced RRP Elite – or even both – is yet to be seen.

Just waiting for Sony to follow suit with this. Who honestly believes that when (I think it's safe to say when rather than if) they release the slim that they'll not cash in on the fact everyone will want one. PS3 Slim for September? Yes. Reduction of price from £299? No.

*waits for Sony rep's "Value" statement*

what a strange generation this is, Nintendo in the lead for sales, sony in 3rd place, wii increase their cost price now MS, Valve not making ps3 games, more and more developers prefering the 360, more DLC exclussive for 360, crazy things going on ! as with the wii if the cost price increases we will not buy the items from suppliers but get them as low as we can where ever we can. after the wii price increase we stopped using koch, but we like gem, but we wont pay the price if we can buy online cheaper, sorry gem,

It's surely going to get a 20GB/60GB hard drive, hence the price increase. Things are too tight here in Europe for Microsoft to hike the price like that.

Hi Robin,

Yes, sorry to go straight off topic! I'm just saying I think Sony will up their price too once the new Slim is announced. It's not good news for anyone though. Mind you, with everyone making decisions that seem to alienate their entire customer base by pricing themselves out of the market it only seems right for Microsoft to join the crazy gang and jack up all their prices too.

Prices for all three consoles are on the rise solely due to the strong Japanese Yen compared to US Dollar / British Pound etc, since these consoles are all manufactured in Japan.
