SingStar Beatles bundle on the way

GAMESCOM'09: Inventive deal will see EA distribute PS3 exclusive, instrument-free SKU of Rock Band, MCV understands

Beatles fans are in for a double treat this Christmas – with a SingStar-branded title dedicated to the band set to join the Fab Four’s official Rock Band game on retail shelves in September.

In great news for the High Street, MCV understands that SingStar: The Beatles Rock Band will effectively be an instrument-free version of The Beatles: Rock Band, and will be exclusively released on PlayStation 3.

Sources at Gamescom in Cologne told MCV that, as with The Beatles: Rock Band, the title will be published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts.

The title, which will come bundled with SingStar microphones, will be released “within days” of The Beatles: Rock Band’s arrival on September 9th, MCV understands.

The title will join SingStar Abba and SingStar Take That at retail this Q4.

Possible cannibalisation TB:RB?

I wonder if this could affect TB:RB negatively as it may eat into some of the casual market that may have otherwise purchased TB:RB instead of Singstar?

I think it's ace. There are loads of people who would have been put off by the price – not to mention the need to 'learn' the insutruments. My Mrs. wouldn't want to learn bass guitar - but she'll jump at the chance to screech Hey Jude at after a bottle of vino. This is going to do my store a world of favours at Xmas. My ears, on the other hand, may suffer.

Gamespot are dismissing this story claiming that sony have not confirmed this at all. They also make a valid point by stating that sony have never allowed other developers to deal with this brand. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it looks unlikely. I guess we will just have to wait until 18:00 tonight

This news is fake

This news is fake. Harmonix and MTV-games have stated, that they have not worked on a beatles game for singstar, and obviously there is nobody else holding the rights for the use of beatles songs in video games

I don't believe it. It seems like it would just be a quick, hastily thrown-together cash-in, which is the polar opposite of what Apple and Harmonix wanted Rock Band to be. And what would be the point of buying SingStar when you can get the same thing with more songs (aren't SingStar games limited to 30 songs?), better vocals, and the option for other instruments still out there?

Kotaku is reporting that 'Harmonix’s Sean Baptiste has issued a short, blunt statement on the matter, saying “This is a misheard rumour. I’ll have more details later in the day about whatever it is they misheard.”' So there is something in it... Maybe a karaoke title that's not SingStar branded? That would make more sense to me.
