GAMESCOM‘09: Though it’s a ‘monster’ that Schafer and Double Fine has ‘slain’
EA has likened rival publisher Activision to “a particularly huge and ugly monster” over the Brutal Legend publishing row.
Speaking at Electronic Art’s press event at Gamescom, the company’s VP of European publishing - Jens Uwe Intat – spoke of Activision’s long-winded legal wrangle with Tim Schafer and Double Fine Productions over the right to publish the upcoming game Brutal Legend.
“Double Fine Productions… were in the news again for slaying a particularly huge and ugly monster, and bunch of lawyers,” said Intat, “who tried to keep Tim from launching this game.”
Activision had reportedly offloaded the Brutal Legend IP during its Blizzard merger, yet the publisher filed a suit against Double Fine in June, claiming it still held rights to the game.
Double Fine countersued, accusing that Activision wanted to sabotage Brutal Legend’s development to protect its own Guitar Hero franchise.
The two groups had eventually settled their row out of court.
“I’m very happy to say [Schafer] got rid of that monster, and Brutal Legend will launch,” added Intat, before EA confirmed that a Brutal Legend demo will be released September 17.
