Microsoft quiet on Xbox 360 price cut

Microsoft quiet on Xbox 360 price cut

GAMESCOM’09: Did excessive stock in the channel cause Microsoft to slam breaks on price cut announcement?

Whilst Peter Molyneux’s impressive Fable III presentation was a pleasant surprise for most at Gamescom, the biggest shock of all was the lowering of the curtains with not so much as a whisper of price cuts or new Xbox 360 SKUs.

Many – including MCV – were expecting Microsoft to announce a price cut to its high-end Xbox 360 Elite, replacing the Xbox 360 Pro in its range of console SKUs.

Some had also predicted a price rise for the Xbox 360 Arcade.

However, MCV was yesterday told by a national electronics retailer that Microsoft was considering delaying the announcement of its price cut whilst it waits for unusually high stock levels of both the Arcade and Elite to clear from the channel.

What is known is that Microsoft has informed retail of a new, as of yet unspecified, Xbox 360 SKU. Whether or not this is the anticipated Xbox 360 Elite price drop remains to be seen.

@ X Williams
You must have some serious bad luck there or just not treat your Xboxes very well. I've had mine for a few years now and it's never red ringed once. It has had to go back to MS for repair but that was just the CD Drive dying not long after I purchased it. If I remeber rightly the whole red ring issue has been pretty much solved and its quite rare now. May be wrong!

Xbox reliability

Xbox reliability is absolutely sickening, it is disgusting how poorly they treat their customers. I have taken extremely good care of mine, its never moved, is in a well ventelated cool room and have rrod twice. My firends is yet to rrod but has had its DVD drive fail.
Each time MS has been as awkward as possible in accepting to repair it.
I have moved from a Xbox to a PS3 and although I appreciate the Xbox titles, MS has tainted the Xbox experience for me for ever with their shoddy build and support.

Wow your answer just show how much of a bot you are. My elite I have, I blew out the dust every week with a gas powered air compresser with the blower attached. So you know that I'm blowing out some dust. Not that crap compressed air cans that lose pressure after the first 2 seconds of use. Mine red ringed exactly one year later. The arcade unit I purchased for the livingroom right around the sametime and its still going strong. It's luck of the draw my friend, user treatment will at most, account for about 5% of the 56% failure rate now of 360's. Yes the new jaspers are failing as well. So please, save your bot answer for your bots in the xbox forums alright, and don't insult people with that company/fanboy answer...

Not trying to be bot here, but I had a launch system - manufacture date of Oct 2005 which was played about every day since getting it. My drive finally gave out a couple weeks ago, so 4yrs with no other trouble sounds pretty good to me. A new computer doesn't even last that long.

I read these comments everyday and people do make me laugh..!!! I have had my xbox for 4 years now I treated it to a new funky shell called the Knight Shade (nice black shell with a X cut out and green lighting effect) I play roughly 15 - 20 hours a week and not once has it let me know. I agree with the blowing out the dust I open mine up and cleaning once a month and it works fine. I work in the industry and enjoy comments from the indies as national boys as they imput is valid but would all the fan boys please not bother as your input is pointless go on gaming forums if you want to do that...!!! Cheers. P.S Trails HD on the 360 is the nuts hahaha had to get that one in though.

I really wonder how many posters actually own a 360 who have rrod?
I think alot of it is just fanboys. I have owned 2 360s (one for me which was launch and one for my 15 year son which is 2 years old)Between games, movies and then netflix my console has had heavy use being the family console. My launch console has rrod 1 time but customer service was excellent. Promptly sent out a "coffin"And had a replacement within 2 weeks with a free month of live which ends up being 2 weeks.
My brother has had his rrod 2 times but he takes crappy care of it (leaves it on carpet srrounded by crap, and is always moving it to Gf's house) and he's happy with customer service and has never had a problem. I have a bunch of friends who are still on their first system.
I wouldnt trade my 360 for anything. I just don't get the complaint on the customer service. Maybe its because the call centers are based in india (i think) and maybe they have some trouble understanding some people.

i've had my xbox for a couple of years, i lay it horizontally, not vertically, and i went to target and bought those sticky little rubber feet to put under the machine. the feet raise the machine up a half an inch or so and really maximizes the ventilation. so far so good.

4th 360

I'm currently on my 4th 360. It's really luck of the draw, and this console has the worst draw of any ever on market. My 1st 360 lasted 13 months, second lasted 11 months, 3rd lasted 8 months. 4th is now 10 months old, but i'm pretty sure it's about to die soon.

When you send in your unit and get a refurbished back it's just trading in a lemon for a lemon.

Also I had an xbox which never broke, still works...going on 9 years, I was in the xbox live beta (3rd wave of testers) and have been on xbox live ever since. So I believe people when they say they red ringed and how many times.

Like I said i'm on my 4th and I don't expect it to last much longer.

I also still have a launch console, I gave it to my Mum lol, and yes, it still works! The reason I did this was because I wanted an Elite which really is excellent, in fact I liked it that much I bought another elite for my five year old son who is never off it, playing Ghostbusters, don't see the point in Wii's, the 360 will grow up with my son. The short of it is though the 360 truly rocks, I do applaud Sony for bringing out a new slim ps3 and off course making it more affordable, I may now consider buying one to play blu-rays.

360 reliability

I got a 360 very early on and despite only being used every other week for 10 to 20 hours it rrod after 9 months.
I sent it back and MS sent out a replacement unit - this unit DID NOT come with a new warrenty- which dissapointed me...and a months free gold is not that special wehn you subscribe anyway...
8 months later the 'new ' unit rrod.....I had to pay MS £70 to get them to fix it......and the each time the report of the fault has been made up or mixed up.....the first saying psu faulty - which i had not sent back and am still using! - the second said graphic chip set failure...not what the engineer on the phone had said when he got me to put the unit through its paces before sending it back....

If the Elite Sku was to have a price drop, there will be alot of PS3 migration like. However I would still use my PS3 as my main gaming machine as I prefer the games on the PS3, If the Elite were to have a price-cut.

I WON AN XBOX 360! (or did i?)...

Oh boy, am I in a pickle..

About a month ago I won £200 worth of e-vouchers via Foster's 'Game On: Ultimate Lads Night In' promotion (by finding the word 'blue' printed under a ringpull)..

It took nearly 2 weeks for the win to be verified and confirmation to be received. As soon as I got my code to enter at HMV, I ordered the 60gb Xbox 360, Farcry 2 and Call of Duty 3..

The games arrived within a few days, but the console was out of stock ('back in stock in 21 days' the website says), so it seems I have a few week's wait on my hands. No problem, it's free, the least I can do is wait..

..so I started hunting for Xbox 360 news.. and that's when I found a bunch of webpages rumouring that the 60gb 360 has been discontinued by Microsoft and there's a possibility the Elite could be coming down to fill it's price point.

There's a few ways this can go as far as I can see it. HMV could get one of the last batches of soon-to-be-eliminated xbox pro's, they'll send it over, it'll inevitably red-ring at some point down the line.. but what then? It sure as hell won't get replaced (especially if they've stopped making them) - that's for dam sure. But, HMV may not get any more 60gb's in - and as a result, my order could get completely brushed aside (I don't know what their policies are on refunding/changing orders on e-voucher credit). Another possibility is that they'll ask for the 2 games back (which are still in their complete original packaging) before changing my order. That'll likely take another few weeks (from the point that they can tell me what the score is). I'm beginning to think this Foster's win will be my downfall!!

HMV customer services are as useful as a chocolate teapot, basically saying they have no information and to simply wait it out, and nearly 2 weeks later their 60gb Xbox 360 page still says 'back in stock in 21 days'.

I well and truely wish Microsoft would pull their fingers out their arses and put an end to these rumours by giving us an official announcement. There's all kinds of suggestions, hinting at Microsoft's plans; the majority of which will most probably turn out to hold no truth whatsoever.

Fill us in, Microsoft.. it's the customers (i.e. myself) who get confused in all of this.. the last thing you should be doing is pussyfooting around potential custom!!

did you actually read my comment?!

i WON £200 worth of e-vouchers.. in this line of business, you're hardly left with a choice of retailer. no sir, the foster's campaign is tied in with HMV online and HMV online only.

believe me.. if i was using my own money and the fact that me ordering a 60gb xbox as a direct result of a competition win was irrelevant, i would of gone elsewhere!!

but, unfortunately, terms and conditions are set in stone and this competition doesn't allow winners to pick the retailer they'd like to shop at!!
