GAMESCOM’09: Speedy move to hardware redesign due to PS3’s lofty achievements, SCEA president claims
Speaking on the US PlayStation blog, Sony America president Jack Tretton has hailed the success of Sony’s PS3 for the speed at which the company has moved to launch a redesign.
“For the original Playstation and the PlayStation 2 we announced revisions of the hardware in the third and fourth years,” the exec explained.
“We’re very pleased that, short of its third birthday, the PS3 has achieved tremendous milestones which have allowed us to bring out this new form factor and pass those savings onto consumers.
“It gives them the opportunity to buy this state of the art gaming system at half the price it originally debuted at in October 2006.”
The new PS3, which it seems is not called the ‘PS3 Slim’, will be released in the UK next month and will cost £249.99.

Savings?
Pass those savings onto customers? It's still no lower than £250... £200 then we're talking. But until then.. boohoo.
Spin
Since when did having to redesign a piece of hardware ahead of schedule count as a plus point? These execs really do live in cloud cuckoo land when it comes to spin.
Not Bad
impressed with the new price and also the larger hard drive i think Xbox will also need to address there pricing as £220 for a Elite console does seem a bit steep against the new PS3.
Elite
Gordon, word is the Elite is dropping to £169.
Err - what?
LOL This makes me laugh.
While I'm glad of a price drop and I think the new PS3 design is good, it makes me laugh when execs use something like this to say "Our system is better."
What they are really saying is; "Our original system design just wasn't selling enough, so we've had to give new consumers a reason to buy this"
The reason the PS1 and PS2 got a make over so late is because consumers were lapping up the original designs and didn't care what it looked like.
Gah I wish Sony execs would stop putting opinions into their announcements. Just say; "Hey guys, we've decided to redesign the PS3 and drop the price a bit."
That way they won't make any stupid remarks that come back later to bite them in the arse.
HOw to think criticaly, and not be a fanboy...
The 'tremendous milestones' can be said to be how to produce and assemble the tecnologies built in the PS3. New tech isnt cheap, we all should know that about now. The original was about 800USD to produce. Thats quite steep. Now, after ONLY 3 years, about 70% cheaper to produce. Thats what I mean. Maybe Sony is even making some profits....who knows? Not us, simpletons who goes arounf the interwebs...now, if you wanna keep that fanboyish"oh Sony wasnt selling so they did the re-design faster because of it" garbage without thinking about it, be my guess. Fanboy thinking rules, right???

still the new line of PS3s dont play ps2 games, im atualy anoyed about how both sony and xbox care so little about there old range of games, espectaly since many of them are better than what they have today, most of the PS3s current IPs are a joke compared to there amazing lineups on the ps2, then again saying this the xbox 360 is no better as it only supports a few dousen xbox games 100%
reading these comments means sony cant win.
you know its not likely that jack tretton was gonna come out and say. you know weve redesigned the PS3 because the 360 was selling better was it. come on give the guy a break of course he is gonna say PS3 is the shiz, its the exact thing microsoft say all the time about themeselves aswell. its called promoting there consoles and bigging them up.
to me i think the first console design sold fantasticly. the 360 has been out 1 year longer than PS3 and sorry to burst anyones bubble but it isnt that far ahead in terms of sales anymore. i wont say most sales are replacements, but articles on this site make it quite clear the "reliability issues" we still have with the box.
i say GO GET EM SONY. because i think they have been playing catchup. and ill say. YO MICROSOFT, what you gonna give us thats gonna beat a blu ray player and wireless built in with free online play for only £20 more than your top end model because it can only be fantatic for the industry and the consumers. i love this part of console life cycles. it gets intresting, and cheaper.
