Amazon predicts PS3 Slim shortages

New Sony console topping the pre-order charts on both sides of the Atlantic

Sony’s soon to be released PS3 Slim is already at the top of the Amazon pre-order charts in both the UK and North America – and the retailer is warning that shortages of the console are likely come its release next month.

Gamasutra reports that Amazon has contacted those who have already ordered the console to warn of “great demand” and has limited pre-orders to one per household in an effort to spread its allocation as far as possible.

It’s also gone as far to tell North American customers that it expects “shortages” across the territory.

Interestingly, in the UK arm of the store the current 80GB PS3 model is just 19th in the most ordered items charts – though it has climbed significantly since the price dropped to £250.

How many customers will be looking to snap up the ‘fat’ machine with the new model so close to release remains to be seen.

Is it me or is the "slim" PS3 not that slim? It's slimmer,But it's about the same size as an Xbox 360. Lol.

In terms of volume it's just over 17% smaller than the 360. It's 19mm smaller on width, 18mm smaller on height (thickness) but 32mm larger on depth. It's 0.7lbs lighter. It also has no external power brick - the 360's is quite substantial in its own right.

Indeed, it's slimmer than the original PS2 aswell (by 13mm) and not as wide too, though it is significantly deeper than the PS2.

Relative to the original PS3 this is 'slim' :)

It looks as though Bobby Kottick from Activision actually got his way when he gave Sony a warning about a price drop on the PS3, Sony went one better and actually bought out a whole new PS3

Sorry, there is no external power brick. The power supply is contained in the console...

According to CNET

"More affordable $299 price; slimmer, more compact design with quieter operation; all games in high-definition; easy-to-use interface; doubles as a Blu-ray and upscaling DVD player; built-in Wi-Fi; 120GB hard drive; HDMI output with 1080p support; no external power supply; built-in Web browser; free online gaming service."...
