Sony: “We’re head-to-head with MS”

GAMESCOM’09: SCEE boss Andrew House talks up fight with Xbox 360

PlayStation platform holder Sony is in bullish mood ahead of the upcoming launches of both PS3 Slim and PSPgo, believing that its two new machines have given it the footing it needs to square up to the challenge posed by Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

“We've competing very seriously, head-to-head, with Microsoft in Europe right now – and this gives us a major opportunity to do that more aggressively,” House told MCV at Gamescom.

“We have very high hopes for the new PS3 and think it will deliver a significant increase in our sales.”

House stopped short of making any 'further bold predictions' saying “it's a little dangerous to make statements like that given the seasonality of our industry and the current climate”, but admitted Sony is quietly confident about its offer in Q3 and Q4.

Customers could pickup a PS3 before this for £250 with games? Ok it's slimmer. But what makes them think they are gonna sell by the bucket loads? It's still at the same price point. They should have made this £200. Sorry but i'm not that enthusiastic about this slimmer product.

Only bargain hunters were able to find ps3s at 249 before. Regular people walking into Game or HMV saw the system at 299. Even just yesterday HMV still had their systems at 299, someone should maybe let them in on the price cut.

If some retailers undercut the RRP before, then they may do the same again with this new RRP. By lowering the RRP Sony could let those retailers go even further if they wanted. Meanwhile now the maximum standard price is 249.

Outside of the UK, in Europe generally, I don't recall ever seeing a PS3 at under 399 euros at bricks and mortars. Now they'll be a hundred euros under everywhere. Given that Microsoft was barely outselling the PS3 since their price cut last year, the PS3 going to 299 should make a big difference vs the 360 as House says.

Perfect time

This is a perfect time for Sony to reduce the size of the PS3 and therefore reduce the cost due to reduction in component cost. Come Christmas they should sell like hot cakes. And no doubt there'll be some half decent bundles by then.

I'm certainly getting a launch slim PS3 to replace my original PS3, which is then going to replace the noisy 360 in the spare room. Manage to sell the 360 for £100 so I am happy.

So it's 50 Quid cheaper............So it's slimmer............So what!......
I love my PS3, it sits under my TV, I only look at it when I'm putting a disc in. I have never looked at it and thought "if only it was slimmer I'd love it even more". Sorry but I can't see how making it slimmer is anything but a marketing gimmick. Making it 50 Quid cheaper it the only way they are going to sell more units, and they could have done that with the existing model.

Damn, God, for an all-knowing deity, you're sure stupid.

They could've just made the existing model cheaper? It's the reduction in the Cell size and other components that makes the system cheaper to produce. That's what allows them to lower the price, without going bankrupt. Continuing to manufacture the existing system and pricing it lower makes no sense. Get a clue.

Sony in Europe

I think it's safe to say that Europe, with the exception of the UK, is already Sony's territory. Despite the price advantage and a year head-start, the 360 failed to impress in those regions.

The newer price cuts and the more diverse library of the PS3 will make it more attractive to the European buyers. Microsoft's stronghold is the US where they invest heavily in advertisements and media exposure. I think it is too late to try to top Sony in Europe.

bravia tv connectivity

sony phone called the anioa in japan or aino everywhere else. also w series laptops have conectivity.

check your playsation fro anywhere in the world via playstation network from any computer.

blu-ray player anyone. ?

its quiet as a mouse. how loud is your telly, better be pretty loud if your thinking of getting an xbox. AnGRy neighbours!!!

playtv (i believe thats caled tivo in america virgin hd or sky hd in england.

the tv listings can be changed recorded and edited form the phone and psp mentioned earlier. a few select games can also be played on psp and phone, whilst on the go, streamed from ps3 harddrive.
blazblue calamity trigger being one of the first games to do this.

optical audio out,

this is getting boring,

HDMI 1.3a

xbox HDMI 1.2 oh dere o dere, looking dire, i feel il actualy, for xbox *peuks

to sum it up, THE ONLY, THING, WRONG, WITH PS3, and its not even wrong, is that it doesnt come with a headset,

BUT, it supports blutooth, and you can choose ANY one that is to your taste, VERY cheaply, and it wil obviously be compatible with your phone as well. some people have there lying around, or i imagine, nick their parents old ones, etc etc. or as i said, they are very cheap, much cheaper than xbox ones, AND will be able to be used everyday, i brought a low-mid price nokia, for £14 quid uk, the same as a replacement headset for xbox uk prices.

The PS3 slim is $100 cheaper than the regular 80gb model of the PS3 used to be , AND it has 40 more gigs. Both of those are very good things, plus the blu-ray player, the wi-fi adapter, and the rechargeable controllers :D and an AWESOME!!! lineup of software. Whats bad about that?

Supposed to be cooler and use much less juice than the "phat" PS3 blasferic m8, so I suspect it wouldn't overheat very easily. Just have to keep these things in sensible places like most electronic equipment.

cheapest i've heard is around 220 for the pre order of the slim. i'm still waiting as theres going to be price drops around (have 1 but would like another). given up on xbox and really happy at what the ps3 can do. i did see some people get it for 200 at argos but that was a mistake with a advert they placed in the nationals so the price point is a good one. will buy a ps3 soon (dont care if its older model) but maybe of ebay or shops selling old models.reckon the'll go for 170 or less

So, when the NPD & Gkn (USA & Euro) sales numbers continue to show Xbox selling strongly - once Microsoft make their inevitable response to this price move - what will the excuse for dire sales numbers be then?

Even in Japan PS3 has been selling pitiable numbers lately.

Most of us don't have Sony TVs (they tend to be the lowest spec and the highest price in any fair comparison) so who cares about their (typical) proprietary connection?

My TV is 1080p and so can only show a 1080p image.
It doesn't make a blind bit of difference what res the Xbox outputs (and btw you're wrong about the res setting, it does do 1080p).
If you mean the native res of games then you'll find that most games on both consoles are less than 1080p.
COD4 for instance is actually 600p.

Hilarious how you you list 'optical audio out' yet make a deal about HDMI 1.3a (so thats not the latest 1.3b standard).
What's with slamming HDMIO 1.2a?
It's good enough to carry SACD & DVD-Audio standard - in otherwords much better than that optical link you choose to trumpet.

As I suspect a lot of you PS3 guys throw specs around like slogans and would appear to have little clue about what hey mean and their practical use.

Which is pretty sad.

No serious a/v fan is going to use a game console as the movie player (and no parents are going to care less about the Blu-ray player being in their kids toy).

Despite the claims the truth is the PS3 is not silent, once the fans start they are annoying and very audible.
Now games can be saved to and played from the hard drive in the Xbox (something the PS3 does not do, it makes partial saves up to 5gb) the Xbox is in fact as quiet as a PS3.

Xbox has instant HD movie streaming and Netflix in the USA & a Sky TV connection in the UK.

Xbox is primarily about games (although it makes an excellent media device with an external hard-drive or wired or wi-fi streaming).
It has more games and more games with a higher score than PS3.

I'd also just wait and see how things move, PS3s price-cut only looks better now because the other 2 have yet to respond.
When they do Sony will once again be noteably the most expensive console out there.

Got a PS 3 and an Xbox.

The Xbox is fantastic online and has great games. The PS3 network is embarassingly bad. I don't want to log on to HOME to see 5 male avatars dancing around one female.

I only use the PS3 for Blu-ray. Sad but true. Killzone was okay but no Gears2.

Just my opinion.
